Over Pronation and High Arches

Categories: saucony running

Question:

Hi all, Well, from the reading of this group and the FAQ, I think that I have determined that I over pronate.  When I looked at the heels of my old shoes, they were worn on the outside.  Am I correct in my judgement?  Also, I have very high arches, and I spent a lot of todays run watching my feet and what they do when I run.  It was then that I remembered a problem that I had when I was a lot younger.  I had a pair of running shoes when I was an eighth grader and I had to stop wearing them after a couple of months because I tended to walk on the inside of my foot and the upper part of the shoe on the left foot actually overlapped the bottom so that I was walking with part of my foot unsupported in any way.  Well, I bought boots and basketball shoes and gave up  wearing running sneakers and quit thinking about it.  Then this morning while looking at my messed up feet, I saw that I still walk on the inside of my foot.  My thought is that maybe it is because I have really high arches and not high enough arch support.   I went through AirForce basic training about four years ago and was required to wear boots with absolutely NO arch support and after six weeks of marching around the base, my shins were so bad that I could barely walk half the time.  I was thinking that maybe this all tied together somehow and that maybe the solution to my problems is getting shoes that have MEGA arch supports.  Any suggestions?? Thanx, -Scott…

I am also wondering about this problem. My ankles hurt after I run hard, and I am thinking that maybe I don’t have the adequate support that I need. All my shoes wear out quickly on the outsides, running shoes, causual, and dress shoes.  I currently run 30-40 miles per week and alternate between Saucony Jazz 5000 and Saucony Express. I am willing to try anything, especially new shoes, Also, am I classified as  Over-Pronation? Thanks for any help! -Mike

Response:

There are no shoes which come with arch supports high enough for my feet.  You may have to look into getting custom orthotics made. — Ray Charbonneau    | MIT Library Systems|    3:09:59
