Polar S810

Categories: running training

Question:

Hi, I’ve bought Polar S810 recently and I’d like to ask some questions: 1. Has anyone tried (with this one or some other Polar) to record lap times during swimming? There is a warning not to use buttons under water, but that would mean that I should have another stopwatch for recording lap times. Is its’ waterproofness really so bad? 2. Yesterday, I tried to use it in the sea, and there was no pulse at all. As soon as I put the transmiter under the water, the pulse becomes zero. 3. During the running training (with RR intervals set), there was around 3% errors (which means 3-5 beats per minute were not received correctly, and that is really too much). If anyone has any experience with all this, or has any advice, thanks a lot. – Pedja.

I’ve see this statement on just about every watch I’ve used.  I think it’s a pretty standard warning.  I should have listened to the advice, because I fried my timex ironman using it underwater. 2. I’m no expert here but I’ll give it a shot.  The transmitter works off of electrical signals from your heart.  Salt water has about the same electrical conductivity as you body, so I think that you have effective grounded yourself when you wear it in the ocean.  Does it work in a pool? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – 3. 810?  thought it only went as high as 710. I have experienced it going up to 200 and reading zero, etc. to my friends they say its just cause the way my chest is built. it doesnt have good conduction. theres a gel out there called buubump, might work. Dont worry about the water i use it all the time, sea & pool, I just hit the buttons with my wrist out of water to be safe.

Response:

Yeah,  I’d be careful about pushing buttons under water. My buddies and I swam with ours in a pool and a lake all summer with no problems.  However, we were not pushing buttons while it was wet.
