Motivate me please!

Question:

I was doing so good.  Running if not every day, then at least every other day.  I was up to 3 miles.  Then 2 weeks ago I had a long weekend without running.  Every since I’ve been back I haven’t had the motivation to go run. Please help!  I’ve got to get back into it…. — Tobie A. Wethington

Response:

I find it exceedingly hard to NOT run at least once a day. My only suggestion to you is that you have to learn to love it, and not view it a chore, or something you need to "find" motivation for. Be proud of your body’s abilities. Imagine if you suddenly lost the ability to run tomorrow, in a horrible accident. Use the gift you’ve got, while you’ve got it. — David (in Hamilton, Ont) "You can’t burn out if you’ve never caught fire." http://www.angelfire.com/nc/swstudio/racing.html –

Response:

Try find a running partner.  Maybe just somebody to run with once or twice a week.  That will usually keep you motivated to run.  Dogs are the greatest, they get so disappointed when you don’t run. You could also try running/training for a small 5k.  Sometimes it helps to have a goal to look forward to.  A lot of people probably run when they do not feel like t least a couple times of month, maybe even a week. You can always crosstrain, or even try running different courses, or at least your one course backwards. -chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was doing so good.  Running if not every day, then at least every other day.  I was up to 3 miles.  Then 2 weeks ago I had a long weekend without running.  Every since I’ve been back I haven’t had the motivation to go run. After a short low key warmup run as hard as you can for as long as you want and then stop.  The next day, just do whatever you want but get out there. When you’re just starting or just getting back into it, the most important thing is to be out there every day.  You don’t have to go far but you do need to enjoy it. -jeff

Do you not take one day off a week?  When I started running a few years back, I ran 7 days a week.  Then I backed off to 6 when I started training for a Marathon while using one of H. Higdon’s plans. — Gary Kopycinski                         Frodo Lives!!! Run the Progressive Marathon for PFRPC! Register at https://www.signmeupsports.com/Events/Index_Events.asp?EventID=8707

How long do you warm up? I find that sometimes it takes me a mile or more to "get the motor running" to where I can run without walking.  Today was a good day. Yesterday was terrible.  I ran perhaps .3 mile when I had to stop because I felt dizzy.  Then I had to sit down, my HR fell to 56 and I almost passed out.  I stood up and walked and was eventually able to finish 4 walking and running. Today I did 7 without a problem — except for warming up for perhaps the first half mile. I should add that yesterday I ran late in the afternoon, and I generally do much better in the morning. — Gary Kopycinski                         Frodo Lives!!! Jeff, Talk about "enjoy it."  Yesterday morning I decided to do my Round the Block deal (.5+ mile).  I did it in 3:03 which is the tied for the best ever. Coming down the home stretch, I realized I wasn’t breathing real hard, I just couldn’t get anymore speed out of my legs.  I also thought it must be all that slow marathon training. I thought, I’ve got to find a slight down hill to work with.  Since it was still before 7am, I decided I’d go up to Hardies and run hills with that group.  I saw their cars, but they had left already. I ran about 1.5 miles to get where they were.  When I saw them make a right turn to go down the last hill, I was in front of them, running toward them, but they didn’t see me. I made a left turn down the same hill, then took off running full bore and got quite a bit of speed running down the slight hill.  When I passed them, one of them said "Jeez" like he was surprised.  I know I was running faster than a sub 5 minute pace, with the help of the downhill, and it was a lot of fun.  It was just what I wanted to do to help get some speed into my legs. The other guy said: "That’s what he did to the Kenyan’s, but they still beat him."  We talked for just a bit, then I went on and did some more hills and they went back to Hardies. When I met up with them later, I told them I decided to train on this side of the river for a while, but I’d still do my long runs on that side.  While the "marathon training" group is OK, but I like the track workouts better on this side of the river and the hills better on this side. Once we start getting closer to the actual marathon, I’ll go back to running all the runs with the "marathon training" group, but until then, I’m going to try and get some speed back.  Any ideas? Thanks for reading,         Roger

One of the best motivations is a running goal, typically a race. Once you make a commitment to yourself and others it serves to keep you motivated. Since you are running 3 miles than a 10k or 15k would be something to try. You don’t have to race, simply participate. — Caveat Lector Doug Freese

Yeah, that’s what I was going to suggest. Pick a race about two months away and pre-register so you’re committed to doing it. I’m having a little difficulty keeping motivated this year, but the thought of throwing away my $250 entry fee for the Great Floridian does help. <g Mike Tennent "IronPenguin" Ironman, Model Railroader, Gamer

I did, for a long time. Before that it was 2 days. Now I run a very easy 6km on my off-day (which is also my swim day, so I am swimming up to 2km also, but that’s different than running, obviously). I plan to still take a full day off once or twice a month. My schedule is in the middle of overhaul, so it’s all messed up right now… — David (in Hamilton, Ont) "You can’t burn out if you’ve never caught fire." http://www.angelfire.com/nc/swstudio/racing.html –

Ok, I did it.  I signed up for the Mad Hatter 5k in October.  Registered and everything.  First race ever.  Since it’s so far away do you think maybe I could go in with the idea of actually competing rather than just finishing? btw…thanks everyone for the motivating words. Tobie

Against yourself – certainly. I would guess by then, if you have time and desire you’ll certainly have run the distance many times in training so you know you can finish.  If you time your runs or try a ‘time trial’ of around three miles you’ll have some idea in your mind what you think you might be capable of and you can go out and try to beat it. For most of us that’s as competitive as we can be in a first race but after that you’ll have a known race time to try and improve on or use to estimate the time for other distances. On the other hand, if you’re running your three miles now in less than 20 minutes then maybe you’ll be competing with the race leaders. Good luck, Charlie

Try mixing up your routes.  Most low-mileage runners tend to run the same route day after day.  Deciding to find a new one every day will add a sense of adventure to your running and help you get out the door.
