Question:
If you want to have her reading books about runners, I would say "Running with the Legends" to give her a sense of history. "Lore of Running" does the same but has some heavy duty science in it–might be too much. Another option for training information would be "Training Young Distance Runners" by Steve Pate. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – my daughter is HS freshman, her first yr running,i would like to get her a good basic running book about cross country for christmas, she had never run before and was just ranked #1 on her team.i know she would like to continue to improve and since i know zero about running, training etc i would really appreciate any books with advice and encouragement van coop

This following is my favorite book and I tend to think of it as "THE bible" of running which has never been equaled (my opinion of course). Its called "Better Training for Long Distance Runners – Second Edition" by Human Kinetics and written by David E. Martin and Peter N Coe.(cost around $22.95 US Dollars). 435 pages. The book is a bit on the…. complicated (for lack of a better word)… side… but thats a definate plus. I only wish I had such a book when I was a kid.. It gets to the stuff that most young athletes SHOULD know but often are not taught by their coaches nor do running magazines do a very good job of covering these topics (sports physiology and how the body works with respect to different kinds of training). Oh, this book really is not about "cross-country" but to be honest.. that does not matter because this book is about something far more important than simply "running on dirt".
