Request beta on Mononghela for beginning of May.

Categories: running trail

Question:

I’ve dayhiked on short sections of the trail, never overnight. My understanding is that it offers spectacular views and that there is no water anywhere along the trail. You must carry all you will need or hike a considerable distance off trail. Early May, West Virginny weather can been absolutely anything from hot and dry to cold and snowy. And, it can change at the drop of a hat. Enjoy. Rob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –         Beginning plans for Three day treck along North Fork Mountain Trail, WV. Is there anyone who could give me pointers on what to expect (Climit, Points of interest, ect.).                         Thanks in advance.                                         Rob (Adirondack Bob) Schreck

I did this trail last Spring (3/96), and found it to be wonderful.  We were able to melt ice for water, and this worked well.  Other than that possibility, you will need to carry your water.  The weather there was only in the 20’s, and in comparison to Dolly Sods which is nearby, it was alot dryer.  The roads in and out are pretty rugged, and subject to washout in heavy rains.  I found the views spectacular, and did not see any other people during my trip.   Good luck – Dudley

Rob, North Fork Mountain is great in early May.  The vista changes during May from the clear low humidity air of spring to the humid air of summer.  One night on the top of the mountain overlooking Seneca Rocks we were able to see the Northern Lights.  That was by far the furthest south that I have ever seen them.  By June the visibility is more limited due to the humid atmosphere.  Have a good time.  Expect temperatures varying between 40 and 75.  Most importantly, water is very limited up top.  Be prepared. Is this the North Mountain Trail??? I don’t know a North Fork Mountain Trail. If it is the former, expect that 3 days is conservative to do the whole thing unless you are running. Trail access if you are doing a partial is difficult as terrain is VERY steep. There is NO WATER along the entire length of the trail, while you may find some, don’t count on it. Pack all yer water. This is a rugged trail, very exposed, whatever weather comes you will bear the brunt of it, it will be colder and windier than you thought, and is very very beautiful with  fantastic views throughout the entire journey. Not many established camps up there. Camp with care. Nice trip, you’ll have fun.
