I’ll be stopping in Friday for the orientation and starting evaluation. She said she didn’t realize I was old enough for it<g Diet: I joined the WW at work program and it starts Tuesday. I’m hoping the weekly weigh-in gives me the little boost I need to stick with it and lose the last few pounds. Biking: We had our graduation ceremonies Saturday. I’m now a certified Metroparks bike patrolman complete with certificate, bright yellow jersey and keys to the radio sheds! I’ll be riding many of the Saturday morning bike rides, special events on the trails and just regular patrol rides on the weekends. With everything in place I’m hoping to see a weight loss and gain in strength and endurance over the next few months. Beverly

Beverly, all these things you’re doing sound like great news. I don’t know what Bally is because I don’t think we have them here, but I’ll be interested to know if you found Curves had helped you to prepare for a "real" gym. I actually got around to phoning the nearest Curves to me this week, and may go for a free tour round to see more – the problem is it’s still a bit of a way to get to which may not be too easy to fit in at least 3 times a week. However, I think it might help prepare me for more serious stuff. Good luck with the WW programme – does that mean WW comes to your workplace, if so that sounds a good idea for busy people. Congratulations on the bike qualification – it sounds as if you’re all set for a great summer (and a busy one!). janice – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Exercise: I stopped at the local Bally facilities Friday and will be changing gyms next week. I’ll still be using Fitday. I want to track the carb/protein/fat ratios and the calories. I’ll use the point system as a guideline. WW was the plan I used when I lost my original weight back in ‘84. I still tracked the calories at that time. I doubt I’ll ever find a program where I wouldn’t be inclined to track calories<g Beverly – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Exercise: I stopped at the local Bally facilities Friday and will be changing gyms next week. Hi Bev, Congrats on the bike patrol graduation! I’m sure you’ll do fine. I joined a Bally’s too and really like it. The atmosphere is great and a lot better than working out at home in my opinion. When I need to workout and don’t have time on my side I will workout at home, but I think there is something about being with others that have the same type of goals like getting in better shape makes it a better place to workout. Have a great day, Paul 300/181/175

I really enjoyed my year at Curves. It was convenient and was a great way to get into regular weight training. I didn’t have to worry about dropping weights, etc<g I think it’s a great way to introduce someone to weight training. After a year I’m ready to tackle different types of weight training and wanted some of the activities not offered at Curves – swimming, walking/running track, aerobic classes, etc. Bally’s is a nationwide chain of gyms. It’s the only gym close to home for me. There is a Y and it’s very nice but the few times I’ve visisted it’s been packed with kids<g Don’t get me wrong – I love kids but don’t want to exercise with them all the time. Yes, WW holds a weekly meeting at work for our employees. They’ve been doing it here for about 6 years. It really does make it easy to attend the meetings as they’re held over our lunch hour. My summer keeps getting busier and busier. I’m having a hard time fitting work into my schedule<G Beverly – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Exercise: I stopped at the local Bally facilities Friday and will be changing gyms next week. Quite trendy then, as well as useful as we lived out in the countryside. I don’t think I’d go back to doing that now – the volume of traffic on the roads has increased beyond recognition and I’m not as brave as I used to be:) janice
It was the late ’50’s for me<g I grew up in a small Ohio town and we rode that thing everywhere. My oldest daughter had a scooter (can’t remember brand) when she was 14. She never rode it too much and we only kept it about one year. At that time we lived in a very traffic congested area and she didn’t feel too safe on it. The kids rode the motorcycles on the back roads near our A-frame in Tennessee more than they did the scooter. Beverly (who wishes she had a motorcycle right now)

It’s not unusual to do 50-75 miles in a day while patroling. Beverly We have a bike trail that’s 18.2 miles long. My goal this summer is to ride it both ways. If my legs don’t hold up for running anymore, then biking is definitely going to be my sport of choice this summer. I love it! I think that I mentioned before that I used to run. It turns out that my knees were not designed for it
I tried taking up running again after I got to my maintenance weight and by the time I got up to 5 mile runs, my knees were complaining again so I went back to the bike. This weekend I rode to Chapel Hill. I was pretty excited about that. Now I need a loop that goes through that area (on bike appropriate roads) so that I can eliminate some of the out and back portion. As an aside, I was wondering if any of you have a scooter? I am interested in learning more about Vespas. I don’t have cycling appropriate roads on the way to work but I could ride a scooter (vespas get to about 60 mph). It looks fun and they get up to 65 mpg so with gas prices… Of course, I would have to ride it *a lot* of miles to use that as a justfication, huh? I guess I had better stick to pedaling <VBG!

I never was much of a runner. I tried it a few times but the knees just don’t cooperate. I’ve had minor knee problems since age 10. I jumped out of a tree and planted my left knee in a pile of broken milk bottles. It took them hours to dig the glass out of my knee. Thankfully running is about the only thing that bothers them other than trying to crawl. You should be able to handle that bike ride without any problems. Beverly
