Only one surprise after my six months and that was slipping into a slow depression that had been easily treatable. Other than that everything is good! > Anyway, I’m very optimistic about the end of tx…I was clear at 12 weeks > and like I said, am confident that the worst of the sides were over. This > group has been very helpful, even though I mostly lurk. Thanks, everyone!

You might get to feeling dragged down, a lot of people do, but the last couple of weeks – for me, at least – were a breeze (relatively) knowing it was going to be over soon. G

Well I did bump along the bottom emotionally in the last third of tx. IThat was the pointwhen it started to really grind me down. The good news for you though is that this info is totally irrelevant to you because my last third was from 16 to 24 weeks. You’ve already been through that bit. Also, it affects everybody differently anyway. — Paul Use the reply by email facility in your newsreader to send email

Which part of this would require using a dry dock? Do you think the bumpy ride was something caused by the ship?

I’m curious what was wrong with the ship to influence your opinion that it needed dry-docking?? I was on the Legend this past March and found it to be in quite good condition. Granted, there were a few places where it needed some work, but to my eyes it was in pretty good shape. Maybe I missed some things.
Which part of this would require using a dry dock? Do you think the bumpy ride was something caused by the ship?

The ship will go to be refurbished in April or May according to crew members with whom I spoke. You may check with cruise line….my opinion is that this ship is being less maintained because of this anticipated refurbishment,,,I cannot prove it to you…I can just tell you the ship is not in the best shape and Merry Christmas to you too!!!!

It sounds like you had some bad weather on your cruise, I am sorry to hear that. You missed a couple of ports and I know that is disappointing. Cruising to Hawaii is not a cruise people schedule all the time. I am sure there were plenty of people on your ship who saved their money all year to pay for this cruise.
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Now that mile 10 is done, the legs are feeling done in, can I somehow dig out 8 min miles for the last 2 to get close to the elusive 1′45? Looks unlikely as the legs are really tying up, but there are some downhill portions so just keep putting one foot in front of the next and somehow mile 12 passes in 7′40 – ya beauty! I know there is a harsh uphill in the last mile but I’m ready for it, slows me down quite a bit but I knew it and there is only half a mile to go, just keep pushing. Really tired and sore now, right calf screams at me a couple of time but I adjust my stride and ignore it. On the track now, where’s that 13 mile marker? See it up ahead so start giving it all thats left. See one guy ahead who cruised past me at mile 11 and I’m reeling him in, literally pipped him at the line and the time? 1h45m25s, fantastic! I am delighted as my goal has been achieved and although I’ll be away for 4 weeks, I am hopeful that I can complete the Loch Ness Marathon in under 4 hours now. Great report. I was willing you along all the way while I was reading it How come I can’t remember races in that amount of detail? Maybe I’ll carry a tape recorder with me…

Thanks! I often enjoy the race reports on here so I thought I would make the effort to describe my race in some detail. Its easier to remember when you’ve had a good day at the office, just like everyone else, I’ve had my fair share of bad days. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed it, job done

Certainly. Well under 4 hours. I’m guessing 3:4x-ish. That’s assuming your marathon training is going well (increased weekly mileage, long runs, etc.) Lesson learned – mileage is key.

Yep. Thanks for the report. Good luck in your marathon. 15 weeks to go, right? Phil M. — "I gotta go. You’re killin’ me."

Cheers! Yep, happy with that time, I’ve aimed for 1′45 3 times now and buggered it up so I was happy to get it under my belt (when I said it was 4 mins off my PB, now sure if it read correcltry, my previous PB was 1′49).

I was staying near Delhi for a couple of weeks this year, I didnt even bother trying to run outside

. I managed to change hotels to one with a gym (near the airport). I didnt see a single person running outside while I was there. Two ideas I had (since the trip) would be to try and find a running track (at a university) or go and run around the perimeter of a golf course.

If India is as hot and humid as Sri Lanka at this time of year, the only time you might want to run is at first light – say 0400! Got to be when the air-conditioned gym with a treadmill comes into it’s own….though the chances of finding that outside the main urban centres is a bit remote. The Uni running track is a good idea – or a horse track, but you’d need to watch out for the local fauna ! Roger — ‘Course Blair isn’t America’s poodle – prison bitch more like ‘ Sir Andrew Hamilton of the British Broadcasting Corporation

Woke up this morning and looked out of the window – the perfect weather for running. Very little wind, temperature about 11 C, mostly cloud cover. I thought, its now or never, I’m rested, carb loaded, training has been fairly solid without injury until a dodgy hamstring developed on Thursday. God knows where it came from because I hadnt done much training this week. Anyway, a trip to a sports massage therapist on Saturday worked away most of the stiffness so I was confident it would hold out. Showered to wake up, had a toast, glass of OJ and made myself a nice fresh coffee which I supped until my mate turned up (late as usual) and off we went with barely enough time to warm up. Frustratingly as we lined up, an announcement came up that there had been an accident on the route and the start was indefinitely delayed – bugger, Ive just had some sports drink and now the delay means I need to go to the toilet. Plus the warm up was slowly cooling down so did a few more jogs up and down waiting for the start. Accident sorted & we’re off, started off slowly enforced by the pack which was good, but got to the first mile marker in 8′17, hmm a bit fast as I am aiming for 1′45 which is 4 mins off my PB. Anyway, although legs felt heavy, no probs, slowed down slightly on the 2nd downhill mile for 8′33. Now the increased distance training paid off, miles 3 and 4 were quickish due to more flat and downhill portions but almost a 3rd done and I’m feeling good. Mile 6, I felt the first twinges shoot through the quads and hams but ignored it and glided through to mile 8 which was a nasty uphill, still its downhill again for a bit after this so no probs. Get to mile 10 and fatigue is really setting in, my mind keeps telling me that if I do 9s from now to the finish, I’ll still beat my PB. But just then, a lady went past me just as I was talking myself into slowing down. I imagined that she was the elusive 1′45 and that I had to keep up with her and it worked for the uphill as she "pulled" me up the hardest mile of the course. Now that mile 10 is done, the legs are feeling done in, can I somehow dig out 8 min miles for the last 2 to get close to the elusive 1′45? Looks unlikely as the legs are really tying up, but there are some downhill portions so just keep putting one foot in front of the next and somehow mile 12 passes in 7′40 – ya beauty! I am delighted as my goal has been achieved and although I’ll be away for 4 weeks, I am hopeful that I can complete the Loch Ness Marathon in under 4 hours now. Lesson learned – mileage is key. I’d done a couple of 14 milers this year and psychologically, 13 miles does not seem too bad even though the last 3 miles were a killer. Plus running a few weeks at 25-30 miles, you have sufficient left in the tank as proved by myself digging out 8 min miles for the last few miles when I didnt think I had it in me. Its hard but I am going to try and get the mileage up to 40 miles plus per week before the marathon and get a few 3 hour runs in. Plus dont listen to those voices in your head telling you to slow down, you’ll regret it at the end! Splits: Mile 1: 8′17 Mile 2: 8′33 Mile 3: 7′45 Mile 4: 7′51 Mile 5: 8′03 Mile 6: 8′15 uphill Mile 7: 8′01 Mile 8: 7′24 Mile 9: 8′03 Mile 10: 8′00 Mile 11: 8′20 uphill Mile 12: 7′40 Mile 13: 8′30 13-13.1: 0′38 I make it a 47 second negative split so I am delighted with that!

I never was much of a runner. I tried it a few times but the knees just don’t cooperate. I’ve had minor knee problems since age 10. I jumped out of a tree and planted my left knee in a pile of broken milk bottles. It took them hours to dig the glass out of my knee. Thankfully running is about the only thing that bothers them other than trying to crawl. With everything in place I’m hoping to see a weight loss and gain in strength and endurance over the next few months. Beverly

That’s great, Angie. One thing I’ve discovered is that as my thighs have become thinner, my gait has changed. It’s now easier to walk long distances, and I can take longer strides. You’ll probably experience something like that as you go along. Working your leg muscles with long walks will help with that. will work out at the gym tomorrow

It’s not a problem…unless there are obstructions in the path of the receiver, like a building. The University of Michigan Track has a building 5 feet from the edge of the track, and I can be off by as much as 1/20th of a mile per lap because of the obstruction caused by the building. -jeremy — — Jeremy Hallum, System Manager , Astronomy, University of Michigan "Audentis Fortuna Iuvat"

Why would you need a GPS unit for running laps? You already know how long a lap is, and can count, and a simple watch will give you pace. — Bob Burns Mill Hall PA

That only works if can stay in a single lane. If you have change lanes to get out of the way for a faster runner and the distance could end up a few feet longer. That can create a great deal of angst for those "precision" people. The actual mile could end up being 5,284 feet and raise havoc in ones log book. ;) — Doug "tongue way in cheek" Freese "Caveat Lector" (remove the NOBS)

If it’s a metric track, you’re more than 30 feet short to the mile anyway (-; And you’d better stay at exactly the right distance from that white line. Cheers, — Donovan Rebbechi http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~elflord/

there is a yahoo group dedicated to the forerunner, google this group for the link. if I remember correctly the accuracy is sufficent enough to be affected by which arm you are wearing it on. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been researching the Timex Bodylink and Forerunner GPS systems, and I am wondering if they correctly register distance traveled while running laps on a 1/4 mile track. Seems like they might possibly be confused by the relatively short circle… does anyone have any information on this?

Good question Bob; I often run to the track from my home, do some laps, and then head out on a road course (not quite sure WHY I do this, but what the heck, it works). And I would be interested in total distance traveled plus the track distance.

Yeah, you wouldn’t want to risk getting lost, so a GPS is a must for any track runner.

Why would you need a GPS unit for running laps?

No one "needs" these toys… But, the word that is pronounced "need" is often spelled "w a n t". And, having a new toy, most boys cannot resist the temptation to play with it.

Response:

I have both the Timex and Garmin and ran a 10K on the track to check the calibration wearing both at the same time. Both read high. I can’t recall the exact numbers but the Timex was about 99.5% accurate and the Garmin was way off, I seem to remember about 95%. The Garmin could not handle the oval very well. All of my running loops that I have show about .05 to .1 longer using the Garmin vs the Timex. I have used the Timex in several certified marathons and it read about .1 to .15 over at the end which is pretty good over 26.2 miles. Have not used the Garmin in a marathon yet. My experice is that the Timex is quite accurate and I am certain that my Garmin is consistantly optimistic in mileage. Also the measurement varies more over the same loop where as the Timex measures virtually identical each time. I’m not sure if accuracy would vary from unit to unit and other people would have better or worse accuracy.

Agreed, they are a luxury, but can also be very useful. When I was training for my first ultra-marathon recently, I was following a training program. When I needed to run say 20kms, I did not need to measure a route. I just went out and ran. It was great. I did random routes and still knew how far I ran. And I came back knowing just a little bit more of the neighbourhood. I have really good memories of some of those ad-hoc runs. Cheers, Russell.

During yesterday’s track workout I wore my Forerunner. I found it to be off anywhere from 3 to 12% too long. I wear the GPS on my right arm and I ran in the middle of lane 1 for most of the laps. When I imported the data onto the Forerunner software, the start and end of each lap never where at the same point. The end point was always at least 50 meters short of the start point of each lap. The device seems to be much more accurate on an out and back or a long loop course where there aren’t a lot of turns.
Yeah, posting insults from the comfort of your living room is pretty ballsy. And it’s a great hobby, too. And totally normal. You’re right about Usenet. Some of it has changed for the better since the early to mid-90s, when it was pretty well dominated by guys like you. I had hoped maybe something like rec.running would be dominated by people who are not emotionally stunted guys (pretty much all guys, right? right) with lingering anger-management difficulties and father issues. I did a quick search on you, Bob. Here and on the Web. You have problems, and like a mystifyingly large number of people, for some reason, you want to work them out here rather than with a friend, a family member, or a qualified therapist. Beating off online, constantly, isn’t going to help you. All I am is an adult who was trying to get a little advice from some other adults. I guess I have to look elsewhere. Thanks again, and good luck.

Bald spots look like that. Try that baldness cream. and spoil my technique in some way, and if so, what would you suggest? I could always scream "Oh my god, my balls have burst!" at an inopportune moment.

About a month ago or so I posted a message asking for help because I had to run 1.5 mile in 13 minutes at the police academy for physical test, and I was so out of shape to run even 1 mile. After running a few laps at the running track, I was feeling exhausted and out of breath without any energy to run another step. When I was at the police academy for the physical test, I was already limping because I had a swollen right ankle as a result of pushing myself to the limit during training. So, I ran 1.5 mile at the academy with a swollen right ankle, and passed to physical test, but the swollen right ankle got worse and pain got more intense. So, I put ice on my ankle and massaged every day. It took nearly a month to recover from that injury. After my right ankle healed up, I felt full of energy, and could barely wait to run again. So, I put on the shorts and shoes and wanted to see if I could manage to run again 1.5 mile after a month of inactivity because I had to get in perfect shape and prepare myself to run 5 miles before the police academy starts in January. When I started running something happened. I never got tired. I ran 1.5 mile, and was not out of breath and didn’t have the burning feeling in my lungs as a result of breathing too heavy. So, I kept running as much as I could… to see how much more of this I could take. So, I ran 3 miles and thought to myself that I was only 2 miles short of 5 miles. So, I kept running. When I was at the 4th mile, I felt the signs of fatigue, but it was not too bad. So I kept running until I ran 5 miles. I just wonder how I could run 5 miles now because I could barely run 1.5 mile before. What happened all of a sudden? On Monday I ran 5 miles, and thought to myself that I was just lucky and couldn’t do it again if I tried. So, I decided to try again on Tuesday. I ran another 5 miles. I started having a very minor pain again on my right ankle, and took Wednesday off and did nothing. On Thursday in spite of the minor pain on my right ankle, I ran 5.5 miles. I took Friday off, and tried to run again on Saturday. When I ran only half mile, I was tired, and out of breath. Not too much but I had a bit of burning feeling in my lungs. I stopped running and put my both hands at my waist and looked at the sky and said, "you gotta be kidding me!?!" in such disappointment. What happened? I showed super-major improvement and then super-major failure. I don’t understand what is happening. Yes I admit that since Thursday, I am under a lot of stress. I sleep 4 or 5 hours a day and eat once a day. Do you think it is the lack of sleep and protein intake getting to me? Has anybody experienced such major improvement and major failure? If so, how can you explain such major improvement and failure? Thanks in advance…

Simple. Your training style goes like this: run yourself into the ground, get injured, rinse and repeat. When you run yourself into the ground, you will make improvements (which may come quite rapidly if you’re a beginner), until injury prevents you from training, or overtraining kills your performance. Lack of sleep contributes to the problem, but it’s only a very small part of it. If you want to get anywhere, you need to do something a little more sophisticated than attempting to set a new personal record on each run. The problem is that you’re simply not ready to train 35 miles a week (which is what running 5 miles each day amounts to). The fact that you can run for 5 miles without stopping does not mean that you can or should maintain 35 miles a week. There are posters here who have run marathons, but you don’t see them trying to run 190 miles per week. If they were to do that, they’d get injured, or they’d be so severely overtrained that they’d get sick. I’d suggest running 5 times a week, making 4 of the runs 2-3 miles at an easy pace (you should feel like you could run the whole 5 miles if you wanted to), and do just one 5 mile run each week. As you get comfortable with this training load (you can use the 5 mile runs as a guide), *gradually* increase your milage.
Donovan and Joseph, thank you guys so much for your responses. Things you say make a lot of sense. I need to have a systematical training schedule rather than getting out there and running my lungs out. Recruits at the police academy begin week one with a daily 1.5 mile run which increases by 10% per week to a maximum of five miles at an 8 minute pace. I think it is better to follow the same pace by starting with 1.5 mile and increasing it by 10% per week. Thanks again

Keep in mind that you can control how winded you get by how fast you run. Slow down a bit and you will be able to go much further. Doc hit on this in a previous post. He wrote, "OR he could just slow down and do it all together." The same applies to the hills. Just ease the pace a bit and you will be able to make it up hills that would have you walking otherwise. Pay attention to your body and it will tell you when to back off, or when it’s ok to pick the pace back up. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello Everyone, For the past several months I have been working on a running program. It’s a walk / run program from this book that builds you up to being able to run for an hour: http://tinyurl.com/jsi1 First week you run 30 seconds, walk 4 mins 30 for an hour, second week run one minute, walk four minutes etc., gradually increasing the intensity. I do the workouts generally every other day, sometimes with two rest days. All these "run so-and-so long in this-and-that nr of weeks" programs, inspiring as they may be, are often too general and need adjusting. As for walls; they are there for climbing over ! Sometimes that can take some time, but if it does, you’ll know you have made real progress when you get past it. Maybe you could alternate between 3 min run/ 2 min walk and 2 min run/ 3 min walk in each run, or do the 3 min run/ 2min walk for the first 20 min ? ( or for the middle third maybe ) of each run and then go back to the easier pace. If you stick with the easier pace for a few weeks more, I’m sure you’d have a better chance at managing the harder pace as well. The main point is to keep at it, train hard but patiently, don’t give up and you’ll get there. Arne Hello Everyone, For the past several months I have been working on a running program. The book is supposed to only take 13 weeks, but I’ve found that agenda to be ridiculously difficult and by doing each week four times as opposed to just once I’ve been able to gradually increase my pace. Until now. I’m up to the point where, for an hour, I can run 2 minutes 30 seconds and walk 20 minutes 30 seconds. Although I’m pretty tired at the end, I can get through it. I’ve been doing that for about five weeks now and it’s time to dial it up a notch – 3 minutes running, 2 minutes walking, for a little over an hour. However, I’ve tried three times now to get to this level and I just keep failing. My legs turn to rubber after half an hour or I’m breathing so hard I have to stop. It seems ridiculous that I can run for two-and-a-half minutes, but not three. What should I do? Run 2 minutes 45? Strikes me as hard to track. Keep going at 2 mins 30 until I’m ready to try again? PUSH myself and get to the three minute mark? Advice is appreciated – Thanks in advance. Cheers, Geoff Glave Vancouver, Canada

Another possibility to consider: Your body may want an easy week to consolidate the gains, so to speak. Just walk for a week. Then, when your body is eager to run, try the 3/2 run/walk ratio again. The results may surprise you. Without this sort of periodicity in training, the harder you work, the smaller the return on your investment. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Arne Hello Everyone, For the past several months I have been working on a running program.
