I’m sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time of it Tony. After trying to get back to work for nearly a year at half time, I know just how hard it is. I never made it even though it was an office job where I wasn’t on my feet all day. The half day just "killed" me mentally. I hope that you have better success than I did in this regard. Standing and working on concrete for some reason is the absolute worst surface to be subjected to. The best success that I had in that regard was to wear double soled safety work boots. It wasn’t perfect but it sure was an improvement over casual shoes. Good luck Tony — Ron P Member of the invisible generation

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, Tono, I’m glad you were assertive and called the case workers. Let them know of your dilemma. They may be able to find you a job where you can sit more often. Possibly a parking lot attendant? I believe the only place to work before they send you to school is at the Goodwill. I’ll have to ask them how they would accommodate someone in a wheelchair? There are no parking lots attendants here, but I’m sure there is down in Gatlinburg. Although I’d probably fall asleep at a job like that. Are you standing on concrete floors most of the time? Is it damp in your environment? These 2 factors affect my body. Yes to the concrete, no to the dampness. Does Alleve or any ibuprofen help with the pain? I honestly don’t recall a single time were any OTC pain meds helped me. Even with headaches, or any pain, I’ve never noticed a decrease in pain. I do have new "gells" in my sneakers. Please keep us updated. I’m planning on going to work on Monday. Hopefully the one case worker will be there to do the evaluation, she was sick last week but never took the time to call me. I think I have a check waiting for me, it should be about $25! Wow! I can retire! I’m waiting to see what kind of raise I get and now I’ll have to wait another 2 weeks until that paycheck and the back pay.
I mentioned computer repair at an AA meeting and people thought it sounded good. I don’t need or want full time. I just need something to get me out of debt and hopefully to replace the savings I’ve spent since living here.
Hi Tony, Have you considered being self-employed again?

Yes, but on a much smaller scale than my old business. You seemed to do well when you were a handyman. And you liked fixing things. Chip

I was considering this before. More recently with free schooling I had been considering being a computer tech and was looking at the vo-tech course for that class. I already build and repair my own PC’s, so maybe I could get away with some more informal training mostly on software issues and a few of the proper tools. The hardware repair is simple in todays throw away world. I used to repair the electronics on circuit boards, down to the individual components, but for PC’s, you just throw it away and install a new one. I’m not sure about the handyman thing. I’ve done construction work/repairs for people I know, but when they referred a friend to me, I went into panic and told them that I don’t have the time right now. Then when they called again later, I was still too busy (doing nothing). And in every town there seems to be a handyman who takes in all kinds of junk lawn mowers, fixes the better ones up and sells them cheap. I’m used to those kind of repairs having 2 little garden tractors/lawn mowers from 1970 and working on my parents lawn mowers at a very young age. Last summer I used one of the 37 year old lawn mowers to cut the grass all summer long. I just like to make old things work. I would have to take care not turning my place into a lawn mower junk yard!
Get orthodics for your shoes. They are amazing and help your feet, legs, knees, everything. If you can’t afford custom orthodics you can buy good ones in some better sporting good stores and off the net. Some even go into the oven and then mold to your feet. And no, you don’t put your feet in the oven. :-) I had to stand all day when I worked for my dad. Fortunately my cousin is a podiatrist and did mine for cost, but even he says the new ones you can get in the better sports stores are pretty good. My problem was aching calfs, and the orthodics just made the pain go away. Fuck. I just talked to both of the case workers and things don’t look good. Then to make things worse, the courses themselves are full time, they don’t pay for part time or evening courses. All I can do for now is to stay at the Goodwill and hope I can build up more stamina. I could lower my med dosages and see what happens? Dear Tony, I’m really sorry that this isn’t working out well. No job is worth this much pain and suffering. Hopefully your therapist will give you some good advice and support.
Tony I also have problems standing for extended periods. It exhausts me and makes my knees and feet hurt. Perhaps changes in your shoes and socks might help? If you need arch supports, you can find different types of off-the-shelf orthotic inserts at sporting goods stores that don’t cost too much. Socks have also made a big difference for me. I use running socks with good cushioning and made out of a fabric like coolmax that wicks away sweat from your feet. Another thing to try is the cushioned floor pad that a lot of checkout clerks in grocery stores use, if you are standing in one place. Cushioning on the floor helps me a great deal. I think a stool would be a real help even if you don’t use it all the time, just for taking periodic breaks from standing on your feet. If they give you time for breaks, another possibility is to find some place where you can lie on the floor and elevate your legs and feet. For example, put your lower legs on the seat of a chair. This circulates the blood that pools in your legs. Finally, what about trying to find a desk job? You write very well and you obviously have some familiarity with computers. I don’t know what you like but maybe Goodwill has need for receptionist/secretary/office assistant? If they deal with the government, I bet they have to do a lot of paperwork. Hope this helps. Bob — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

Are you standing on concrete floors most of the time? Is it damp in your environment? These 2 factors affect my body. Does Alleve or any ibuprofen help with the pain?
Tony, I have a problem, not standing still, but walking all day long on a job with no place to sit down. Perhaps you Rehab Counselor can help you to get a stool or something. A doctor could back you up on the pain part, if you make an appointment. You may need a job that is at least partially, if not all – a sit down job.
Well, what kind of shoes and socks are you wearing? It’s hard to tell if they are the problem without having more information. However, based on what you wrote, I’m guessing that you are wearing cotton socks. Cotton socks are a bad thing – get some running socks made from CoolMax. They sell them almost every where (even Wal-Mart), so you shouldn’t have trouble finding them. marisa

My last race in July was $150 plus some extra post race meals meals which took it optionally over $200. The add $600 for two rooms for three nights and this is only one race. My choice for all this a bit more than $320 a year. Hey, its cheaper than rehab and counseling.

…for arch pain? Got any sort of research, or hell, even some anecdotal evidence that wearing socks with separate toes will prevent this? C’mon… I’m sure they are comfy, and I’m not saying they suck or something, but when I say you trying to sell them to someone with arch pain, it just seemed a little silly.
The way I understand it the plantar fascia run from the back of the toes to the heel and you could have pain in any part. I’m recovering from heel pain now, but I remember having to deal with a minor case in High School track (35 yrs ago!) in the middle part. High arches are supposed to predispose you for it.

Response:

I’m curious. Why do you need the shoe to CORRECT your foot strike? Since you say you are an underpronator (suppinator), what’s to correct?

The Brooks Hyperion is classified as a cushioning shoe. It has a slightly curved last, which would bring my foot inward a little. I realize you know this! The shoe does have a defined arch support. I’ll try running with a flat insole and see if it helps. I can see what you saying. I might have the pain, because my arch isn’t flexing. If I were running barefoot, I wouldn’t have any arch support, so it may be natural for the arch to flex. I’ll give it a try. I’ve also noticed another thing. I’ve worn a few stability shoes and they all felt horrible. It felt like my feet were being pulled to the outside. Thanks, Troy The – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – high-arch, underpronate condition is a fairly common duo, and generally needs no motion control or stabilizing. Here’s a thought. If the Hyperion has a well defined arch support built into the insole (I’ve used Brooks b4 and think yes), then the control (of the shoe) and the intrusion of the arch may be the culprit. As a test try removing the original insole and replacing it with a FLAT insole. Try that for a few miles/days (or…?) and see if there’s any improvement. If not, well no harm done, since you already have a problem. If things get better, then keep on truckin’. I also have a high arch and underpronate (bowed legs, to boot). Even though high arches are said to be "rigid", implying BAD, they still need to flex during weight bearing. Arch support (if excessive) can actually be the source of pain (certainly for me, before I figured it out) – opposite of the supposed purpose of preventing pain.

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I have a pair of socks from Tilley called walking socks that are wool and padded also. They are not cheap, $22 Canadian, but are guaranteed for 3 years. They are very comfortable. Have a look at www.tilley.com. In the Volume 14 Number 2 Spring 2001 issue of Diabetes Spectrum, there’s an article on socks for diabetics. It’s on Page 59, and it’s titled Clinical Decision Making: Sockwear Recommendations for People with Diabetes. Diabetics"with ‘normal’ feet should be able to wear "whatever socks they find to be comfortable." (p. 61). Natural fibers are able to absorb moisture from the skin but will hold the moisture. Acrylics, though, are able to wick moisture away from the skin. For diabetics with foot problems, densely padded socks are recommended. They don’t actually come out in the article and say "Go buy Thorlos" but gee, Thorlos are the only socks mentioned by name in the article and the only ones described in the article that meet their criteria. I suspect that, while diabetic athletes without foot problems are not advised to get densely padded socks of acrylic, it’s a good idea. I will point out that, while Thorlos will reduce the chances of blistering, it is possible to get a blister with them. I’ve got a big honking one on my heel that seems to have come from not tying my shoes properly, allowing my heel to slide up and down in the shoe for 22 miles. My bad. Rob

Thank you all, I live in N.Ireland and it’s not so easy to go out and purchase these things when I don’t know where to find them but I did get an appointment with the hospital, ortho?????? (Spelling is not my strong point???) for July — mark brown

I spent the month of October in Bangkok. I tried running outdoors for a couple of days & couldn’t take the air pollution. The air quality was so poor that after a run the sweat that ran down my legs made the tops of my white running socks gray with soot. Bangkok is a city of over 10 million people with millions of diesel busses & trucks, two-cycle mopeds & tuk-tuks… Also, everyone is cooking in the streets with coal. The heat was also very intense although being from south Louisiana, that wasn’t an issue with me, just the air quality. Many of the traffic cops, parking lot attendants, and others working outside wear air filters over their mouths & noses to purify the air they take in. At times while walking, I literally began choking & gasping for air. Don’t mean to sound down on Bangkok, but its just not a place to run. If you can find your way out of the city, the countryside is beautiful & the air much cleaner. Culturally, Bangkok is a wonderful city. Crime is almost nonexistent. The people of Bangkok & all of Thailand are wonderful people. cajunman finisher – 1999 boston marathon!

Bob, You WILL stand out, because of the height difference (I’m 6′4", but most Thais don’t come up to my shoulders). But it doesn’t matter, because Americans are very popular in Thailand (at least when I was there). If you go to a place like the Amarin Towers (where you find KFC, Pizza Hut, and shopping oriented toward Americans) you basically can’t get into the places because they’re so full of Thais. Culture isn’t the problem. The problem for running in Bangkok is air pollution. It is very congested and one of the most polluted places in the world; Maybe the only place to compare it with would be Mexico City during an inversion. Be prepared for this. Also the temperatures are warm (90 degrees and humid is quite common year-round). If you want to do it, you can. You’ll be best off if you can get some transportation to take you out of the Bangkok metro area. But expect it to be like doing 20 miles in Florida in the summer. Lyndon I’ll be spending about 2 weeks in Bangkok about a month before the Pittsburgh Marathon. I should be peaking on my long run at that time. I’d like to do about a 20 miler while there. Does anybody have any experience running there and also how that kind of thing appears in their culture? I would hate to do something that makes me stand out more than I already will.
There is no problem with culture while running in Bangkok. Bangkok is a modern city and there are people concern about their health as anywhere else. I’ve run at Lumpini park (2.5 km track on asphalt) and there lots of runners in the park. There are even a few "serious" ones with the pre-requisite high-tech attire. The park is accesible by the skytrain. Pollution is not really that bad although the park is surrounded by roads filled with traffic. Rohaizad

would hate to do something that makes me stand out more than I already will. I definetely have some experience with overseas running – not in Bangkok, but i lived in Shanghai, China over the summer and ran there quite frequently. Also, when i was visiting Beiijing, i got to run in Tiannamen Square (one of the highlights of my life). Let me tell you straight off that as a white person in Bangkok or Shanghai, your going to stand out whether you walk, run, or juggle balls in the middle of the street. People ARE going to stare where ever you go. You get used to it after awhile and learn to accept it as part of the culture (culture shock takes about 2 weeks to shake off) As far as running being accepted, i never saw tons of people just running for recreation because generally people in China get most of their daily exercise from biking everywhere (most can’t afford a car), but it is definetely not unaccepted and looked down upon. Just be weary of dogs though because they were running around everywhere. Anyways, hope i was helpful. -/Chris Reath.

It took me a minute to visualize this, but I finally got it. This is probably doable, but my favorite running socks are thin, ankle high things. I think of baseball socks as thicker. Also, hoping for a more elegant solution. (Also having a hard time putting the concepts "elegant" 6′8" and "running" together).
