Diabetic Alert: Socks

Categories: running socks

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I have a pair of socks from Tilley called walking socks that are wool and padded also. They are not cheap, $22 Canadian, but are guaranteed for 3 years. They are very comfortable. Have a look at www.tilley.com. In the Volume 14 Number 2 Spring 2001 issue of Diabetes Spectrum, there’s an article on socks for diabetics. It’s on Page 59, and it’s titled Clinical Decision Making: Sockwear Recommendations for People with Diabetes. Diabetics"with ‘normal’ feet should be able to wear "whatever socks they find to be comfortable." (p. 61). Natural fibers are able to absorb moisture from the skin but will hold the moisture. Acrylics, though, are able to wick moisture away from the skin. For diabetics with foot problems, densely padded socks are recommended. They don’t actually come out in the article and say "Go buy Thorlos" but gee, Thorlos are the only socks mentioned by name in the article and the only ones described in the article that meet their criteria. I suspect that, while diabetic athletes without foot problems are not advised to get densely padded socks of acrylic, it’s a good idea. I will point out that, while Thorlos will reduce the chances of blistering, it is possible to get a blister with them. I’ve got a big honking one on my heel that seems to have come from not tying my shoes properly, allowing my heel to slide up and down in the shoe for 22 miles. My bad. Rob

Thank you all, I live in N.Ireland and it’s not so easy to go out and purchase these things when I don’t know where to find them but I did get an appointment with the hospital, ortho?????? (Spelling is not my strong point???) for July — mark brown

Carol, Interesting. I did a quick search and came up empty. I bet they have the socks custom made for them. With the bucks they make, small change. — Bob Visit my information & link page at http://twilight.webbernet.net/~gooteebob/index_html.htm news.newusers.questions Moderation Team Worker

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –  I also have some really clownish socks for edema that are WAY oversized.  But sometimes that’s all I can get my feet into.  It was a relief to finally find those because my feet tend to get cold.  And when they were really swollen I had to keep taking of my socks at frequent intervals because they were cutting into my feet and legs. The best socks my husband found are socks for amputees. They are tube socks and unshaped. They are very stretchy, long, and come in white which is the best color to prevent infection. They come ONE to a package so you have to buy  TWO packages for a pair but he loves them,… even more than his Thorlos.

Hmmm…  I have never seen those.  Will have to look for them. DH needs socks that go over the knee to be above the top of his braces. Thorlo makes a great over the knee sock in large size (16 or somoethhing) but only sells it in Europe and you have to order 60 dozen sure would like to find someone who lives in Europe who can buy us a smaller quantity. I don’t know, but I was once shown a really huge basketball shoe at Nordstroms.  This was way back when they still wore those high top canvas ones.  The salesman sort of reeled out this shoe and it just kept coming. Can’t remember what size he said it was, but it was a big one!  It was a special order for one of the Sonics. — Type 2 http://www.redshift.com/~juliebove/

I know that feeling!  If mine get any wider or thicker I shall have to resort to buying those custom ones made specifically for your feet.  Not that I can afford them mind you.  My Mother said jokingly that I should just wear the shoe boxes.  And actually, those might fit! — Type 2 http://www.redshift.com/~juliebove/

Yes you can. Find an orthotist in your area.An orthoist can have them specially made.  You may even be able to get them covered by insurance with a referral from your doctor. If you can’t find one, write me shoes for the name of someone in your area. Carol .

You’ll find them at pharmacies or places that deal with amputees appliances like orthotists. know, but I was once shown a really huge basketball shoe at Nordstroms.  This was way back when they still wore those high top canvas ones.  The salesman sort of reeled out this shoe and it just kept coming. Nordstrom’s will special order but I didn’t know they’d go that far. Never had them admit they could get anything larger than a 16EEE Carol
