What to wear for race?

Categories: running shorts

Question:

In The only thing I would add is a subjective rule of thumb. If you’re standing around just before the race and you’re comfortable – you have on too much. I want to feel a little cool or chilly, then I know I have it right. One you start, your body temperature increases.

Mike: The only problem I have with this is that I get so nervous waiting for the race to start that the chills are almost impossible to take. By the time the race starts I’m shivering!~! Joe

Steve, congrats on your first race! Here’s my table of what to wear. Adjust for your own tastes and body norms. Wind Chill              Clothing = 55                shorts, singlet 45-55                shorts, t-shirt 40-45                shorts, long sleeves 35-40                tights, long sleeves

I like what Jim suggests. His temperature/clothing chart is identical to mine. The only thing I would add is a subjective rule of thumb. I am going to run in my first race this weekend.  I don’t know what i should wear for the race.  The race is in the morning and temps. are expected to be in the upper thirties.  I usually run in the afeternoon when it is usually in the fifties.  So the conditions will be a little differnet than what i am used to.  any advice would be great. steve

A lot for me depends on the length of the race, but usually I will wear about the same clothing.I might wear a loose fitting cotton long sleave t-shirt and a pair of light cotton gloves to keep my hands warm, but they usually come off after the first mile. I still wear running shorts and warm up good before the race to stay loose. Upper 30’s is good running weather, keeps the body temp. down. Good luck Seek first to understand, then to be understood. 45-55                shorts, t-shirt 40-45                shorts, long sleeves 35-40                tights, long sleeves Now, a couple of points. Don’t forget that you’re dressing for the entire race, not just the start. If it’s a 5k, no big deal; if it’s more than an hour for you, the temp at the end could be much higher. I tend to dress for the average temp. If in doubt, wear less. Also, especially if the race is more than an hour, do NOT wear cotton. Like the race shirt that you typically get. Wear Coolmax to wick the sweat away from your body. I have seen cotton shirts freeze in cold weather! If you can’t get the wind chill, subtract the wind velocity in miles per hour from the temp and you’ll be close enough for this. Don’t forget your ears and hands–I need gloves and ear protection for them in the thirties. Polyester fleece is best–wicks away the sweat and doesn’t get cold.
