Race report – Half marathon – pre-race

Categories: running shorts

Question:

I find the whole idea strange, but strangely interesting …. if we do a VRRRM (virtual rec runners relay marathon) dibs I get Nina to run with! Wouldn’t it be better to run alongside her, talking ? :) Sshhh… I’m not as talkative during running, it’s all unleashed afterwards. ;)

One good thing about talking is, that it help keep the speed down. We have a funny marathon relay here in Basel/Switzerland, it’s called ‘ekiden’ which apparently is a Japanese format. They split up the marathon among I believe 5 or 6 runners who all run different distances, with the longest being just over 10 km.

We also have an ekiden here. 1 runner runs 7.2k, and then it is 5k, 10k, 5k, 10k, 5k. Search on google, and you will get about 19700 hits.

Sounds like your selection of clothes was perfect for the temperamental weather, especially the layering of the shirt and jacket. What did you do with the jacket when you weren’t wearing it – tie it around your waist? Was it not getting into your way? (I’ve never figured out how to do this properly)

As I was wearing tights, I took whatever dangling parts and put inside the tighs, so problem solved. Also make sure not to tie it too hard so that it effects breathing. Use the tights to help keeping it up. Can’t do the same with running shorts. I was expecting to hit the wall around 17 km, as I did on my first half 2 years ago, but I didn’t. Pain was starting to be present in my calves, but that was it. Around 20 km, the pain was getting worse, but not more than I could push on. Boy, you managed your resources well! Congrats on a race well run, Povl – both to you and your pal. How cool that you were both way faster than you’d thought! I can’t believe you ran such a smooth, good race in such weird weather – the humidity is disgusting there. :P

My pal was complaining about the wind on the headwind stretches. He was also using a wind proof jacket of the same type, but running shorts. If you want to see pictures, you can find them on http://www.photomotion.dk – press english flag, Find Picture, enter 1047 in the search box. I am the guy on the 2nd picture. This linkl will probably also work: http://db.photomotion.dk/result.php3?loebsnavn=citymarathon&lbnr=1047… So, what’s next?

Marathon training, and probaly Hamburg at the end of April. Might do another half on december 31st. Should be able to break 1:40 there if I get enough training in. It is pretty flat, and I have been at around 1:42 last time I was in shape. But it is still 10 minutes faster than sunday on a half = 30 secs/km. And when I did my first half 2 years ago, I was way slow. Around 1:55 I think. But been down to 1:42 as far as I remember.

The weather was windy, light showers, and 11 degrees C. Most people did not like the showers, neither did I, but the temperature was OK. I decided to run in tights ending just above the knee, a PE-107 t-shirt (Coolmax like material, also from Dupont) and my old thin windproof jacket.

Reading your report made me think again what to wear on my half marathon in two weeks. It really is quite difficult to gear up properly if at one stage there’s a cold breeze and freeze, and at another no wind and warm.
