Mace
Question:
I use HALT dog repellant which has a clip for your waistband. It is a red pepper based spray and is reasonably priced from Bike Nashbar ($2-$3). TJ Hall
Response:
I don’t know. The dogs around here are pretty smart. I saw one with a cell phone once.
i saw her too, she was on her way to the plastic surgeon:) Seriously, though, I surprised to see how many little gadgets they really do have their. Are they legit?
who-the dogs, the phones, the surgeons or the boobs?:)

I’m not a total nutcase, but when I read the title for this thread, the first thing that flashed into my head was the image of some medieval person running along the road swinging a mace (that’s what those round, spiked things on chains were called, right?). Makes you wonder about the brain sometimes… HG No, you’re nt a nutcase. I knew what it was about, but the image of a guy in running shorts/tanktop running around with a mace poopped intoo my head.
I just thought "What a cool way for medieval distance runners to build up shoulder/back muscles." I was disappointed when I read the thread! Mike Wilcox

: http://www.usfederal.com/pepper.htm - has a spray that looks like a : jogging-hand-carrying weight. I’m curious as to why you would want to disguise the spray as a hand weight or pager or whatever. Why not follow the cue of brightly colored butterflies and such and let the bad guys know right from the start that you’re an untasty and toxic morsel? Seems like an unneeded extra step to let them attack first and then get ‘em with your disguised spray. *Dana

It might not be much protection, but at least it’s something, and I do feel more secure.
I work for a federal law enforcement agency and due to some training I had about 5-6 years ago I was one of the guinea pigs who was subjected to pepper spray. Believe me, it’s all the protection you’ll need. Four of us were hit with it and I was the fastest to recover. I could see in 20 minutes, but things were blurry. I immediately showered after I got home and the next morning as I showered again, some residue was apparently left in the pores of my forehead or hairline, and I received a second dose. I just started running again and have thought of buying some myself due to a Rottweiler that’s on our road and at times is unchained. Good luck. Bill

Hi, I need some help finding a good mace that is easy to carry while running. I have seen people in the past carrying mace that almost fits in the palm of their hands. Does anyone know a phone number or web site for something like this? Any other information on how to protect yourself while running would be appreciated. Joe

I found a mixture of pepper spray and mace that I carry. It does fit in the palm of my hand. I ended up buying two – one for home and one for when I run. I bought it at my local car wash. I checked at the auto parts stores first, but it turns out they don’t carry it. I feel much better carrying it since I run in the early morning hours due to my schedule. It might not be much protection, but at least it’s something, and I do feel more secure. Good luck. My brother-in-law is a State Police officer. Part of his training was getting sprayed in the face with pepper spray as well. He lived to tell about it. :) It is strong, though. Plus, if you play your cards right, you can find them with a nice dye inside which will mark the perp. as well, just in case they deny something later on.
