Chafing.

Categories: running shorts

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi. This is pretty embarrassing but I’ve got to find a work-around. a) When I’m doing long sets, maybe an hour or a 11/2 hr. run, I sweat a lot, and this causes my nipples to chafe against my T-shirt. I’m male, so I hope this won’t invite too many barbs :-}. Other than removing my t-shirt altogether, is there another way? Have any other male runners experienced this problem? b) After I’ve run for a while, I start experiencing nasal congestion. Is it a good idea to breathe through the mouth? thanks, –harish

– (a) Bruised nipples are faily common. Use petroleum base vaseline. Vaselines with lard or other organic base do not last because sweat tends to break them down and they wash off. Also drink before a run and during if possible. One of the symptoms of an oncoming dehydration are erect nipples. Stiff, erect nipples bruise. (b) You should breath thru the mounth! The nasal pasages are too narow to handle the amount of air your body needs if you run at a runner’s pace. /             / | oo       oo |/ ||     |||     ||    Pete, 53, fore-foot striker since 1959 ||             ||        |     ===     |       //|

you might also want to try Body Glide.  It looks like a stick of deoderant, and you can probably find it in your local running store.  It’s a bit pricey, but for long runs especially, it works great.

Response:

Try using vaseline where you experience chafing, this will reduce the friction. Re. breathing through your mouth, I’ve read that you’re really supposed to breathe through your mouth otherwise you may not be getting enough oxygen. — Greg Vincent

Solved this problem by wearing stretch running shorts (ie bicycle shorts) under my normal running shorts.  Havnt had any probs since. IM
