Question:
I want to complete a short trialthalon next summer and I have a few questions: 1. Are there age categories? 2. Where/How do you change? 3. Does anyone know of events in Southwestern PA – both now so I could watch and for next year.

Yes. 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, etc. Men’s & Women’s. 2. Where/How do you change?
You don’t fully change clothes. You basically wear your bathing suit for the entire race, pulling on/off additional clothes as needed in transition. Most races have age categories either in 5 or 10 year increments (eg. 20- 24 or 20-29). I have seen races however with an OPEN category and a 60+ category only. Each category is also broken into men and women. As for changing, most people don’t. Generally you swim, bike and run in a swimsuit (this is up to personal preference of course). Usually you start the race in your swimsuit (and wetsuit if allowed). After the swim you strip off your wetsuit (if wearing one) and head out on your bike. Most guys will pull on a singlet, and in many races some sort of shirt must be worn (check with the rules in your race package). Some people prefer to pull on cycling shorts, jersey, or both over their suit, I don’t. Many swimsuit manufacturers make suits for triathlons with padding for the bike, if this a concern for you. For the run, again most people just run in their suit, however I pull on a pair of running shorts (I have this thing about my butt in a swimsuit while I’m running). I have seen people strip down in transition (right to their skivvies) and change clothes completely – however I don’t recommend this. Longer (Ironman) races have change tents set up. Hope this helps. ok…with regards to this questions…..i would like to know in the usa, how much space is alloted to a triathlete at the swim-bike-run transition area? ie the place where u park your racers. in singapore, the place is so small that it is just a mere 1 metre space between each racers. this i think is rather small i do not have the place to put my belongings. my bag, shoe….etc. the problem will be bad if the guys on both sides of you come out of the swim together with u…threesome. then there will be a congestion!! i had atched the phuket triathlon on tv and was amazed at the space alloted between each racers.

Well, we generally don’t have ANY space alloted to an athlete. Mostly you have to find what you can. I like to lay down a little 2 foot square towel and put my stuff on it usually right next to, behind, in front of, or under my bike. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I want to complete a short trialthalon next summer and I have a few questions: 1. Lynn, You’ve already received answers to the first two questions, so I won’t add anything there, except to say that you would be "in the norm" if your threw a pair of cycling shorts on for the bike and then ran in them or put on a pair of running shorts for the run. As for races, there is a magazine called "Triathlete" (bigger book stores like Barnes & Nobles and Borders usually carry it). It has a list near the back of different races and breaks them down into geographic locations. Their online calander is located at: http://www.triathletemag.com/clndr/cal1.html (just go to …..com to get to the first page of the mag.) I lived in Pittsburgh for a while and did the Edinboro Tri (usually 1st weekend in June) and then a few in Ohio (Akron and a few others). There is also one in Ford City in early Sept?
