Orthotics users?! Help a future wearer

Question:

Question for orthotics users – will they REALLY help? Money is too tight to waste! Dana

I have had my orthotics for about ten years now and covered over 20,000km in them and all I have had to do is to have them re-covered a few times.   Definitely worth the money, shin splints went in a couple of weeks and pace picked up by a few percent. Trevor Hand

I have had orthotics for the last 4 years and have been totally injury free. However it did take me 3 attempts to find a solution – the first pair I was given would most certainly ended up giving me a stress fracture – overcorrection I think. My advice is orthotics certainly work but be very carefull who prescribes them to you. The only complaint I have is that they seem to have an adverse effect on my posture perhaps due to raising steve Johns,Nottingham,UK

Steve:  The orthotic heel and instep height should not cause any excessive "tipping" of your body forward or backwards.  You should only be a bit taller chap when wearing them.  I use semi-flexible orthotics-not the rigid style.  Ted

Hi – After 3 years of 5x weekly running, I gave in to my foot, knee and hip pain and saw a podiatrist who believes I wildly overpronate (he says my feet completely rock around, causing knee and hip alignment problems) and wants to fit me for orthotics.  My insurance will not pay for these orthotics (although they are willing to pay for the physical therapy and MD visits I will need for the rest of my running life without orthotics). Question for orthotics users – will they REALLY help? Money is too tight to waste! DanaThe answer is orthotics, however the results rest on how well they work

for you based on the doctors ability, his laboratory and your ability to tolerate whatever he gives you. Ask for a 60 day money back guarantee. If you don’t notice improvement by then or are dissatisfied with how they feel get your money back. Anyone worth their salt should stand by what they do. Dennis Kiper, DPM

I don’t wear orthotics but from time to time I run with a co-worker who had major knee surgery about 20 years ago.  His knee is so bad that it caves in laterally towards the other knee with every step he takes, both running and walking.  This gives him a noticeable limp.   The orthopodist told him to quit running, but he refused.  They compromised with orthotics.  The first day he got them I ran with him.  I couldn’t believe it.  I ran behind him, I ran beside him, I ran in front of him – everywhere I looked his stride was perfect!  Made a believer of me. Orthotics helped for me.  I discovered foot and knee pain while training for my first marathon.  The doctor gave me non-prescription ones first just to see if they made a difference.  Maybe you should do the same.   However, I only get Plantar Faciitis pain when I put in lots of miles.   I even got a pair made for my flats (which have no support at all). I have been perscribed orthotics, and have used them for years, but as they are the hard plastic type, they are not very comforterble for activities like running.  Last summer was the first time I really started jogging seriously (for me anyway), between half an hour and one hour a day. I never used my orthotics in my running shoes, as I bought ones with high arches and all round good support.  For three months of running I had no problems whatsoever, then in the fall, a few days after getting shin splints from playing ultimate with completely flat-soled cleats, I went for a jog and didn’t go more than three blocks before my shin muscles started tightening up and throbing with pain (more accute on my right leg, which pronates more than my left).  Anyways, at first I related this to the shin splints and layed-off doing anything for a few weeks, but each time I went for a run after that, I felt completely flat-footed – like I couldn’t roll off my feet the way I used to and the same pain would return. To make a long story short, It is now seven months later and the problem is the same. I would understand if this happened in the first place (because I wasn’t using my orthotics), but I don’t understand why this would happen all of a sudden. Any ideas?…

I have been a runner for a few years.  I also had problems with my ankles, knees and back.  I play many sports and did not want to stop just because of the pain I was experiencing.  I have flat feet and they move all over the place.  I got orthotics and they have made a huge difference.  They really reduce sprained ankles and other injuries.  I wear them all the time in all my shoes not just sport shoes.  I had mine for 6 years before they started falling apart.  My doctor just send them back for repairs.  They are a good investment if you have pain and discomfort.  It may seem like a lot of money now but it will save you pain and time in the future.  They last a long time so the expense is one time and then for fixings. alexandra
