Keep at it, very slowly. You’re half my age so it won’t take you as long, which is lucky for you as after four months I’m still only able to manage 10 minutes! But several times a week, slowly, and just enjoy the fresh air. Best of luck and let us know when you’ve made it to five minutes… Aunty Jules

Well, as others have pointed out, it varies widely, depending on many things. For me, it took four weeks. I precisely followed Bill Rodger’s beginning program in "The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Running". (Even though I’m really only a partial idiot, I found that most of it still applied.) Of course, everyone’s different. That said, in general, here’s what you need to do: 1) Get some real running shoes, ideally from a real running store. 2) You should be able to walk for 30 minutes and have it be no big deal. Do not start a running program until this is the case. You probably already have a good level of fitness from martial arts, so this might not be a problem. 3) Head out for 30 minutes, three or four days a week. Morning, lunchtime, night… whatever works for you. 4) Run for some of that time, and walk for some of that time. Each time you go out, increase the running parts and decrease the walking parts a bit. 5) Run slower than you think you should. Running too fast is a common beginner’s error. If you take off running as hard as you can, you’re not going to last 30 minutes, I don’t care who you are. The focus is on endurance. Speed and distance will come later. 6) Pay attention to your body and don’t run if you feel a real injury–something that’s different from the normal aches and muscle soreness. 7) Once you can go 30 minutes non-stop, do these two things: A. Post here and let us know about it. Gloating is encouraged. B. Pre-register for a local 5k race. (Harder to back out that way) Good luck! - Jeff
