Looking for non-leather hiking boots.
Question:
If you know of any good (or even not so good) non-leather hiking boots. Please reply to or just post a reply to rec.backcountry. Thanks, Chris.

< Hi, I have Vasque Clarion V Gortex boots and I love them. < They are water resistant and really didn’t have to be < broken in at all. And they have held up really well for me and < they are so comfortable that I even wear them around on snowy days. < My opinion of course. Sue

Why? Have you got a thing against leather, or do you want something with some other special characteristic (waterproof, warm, lightweight, colorful, or glow-in-the-dark)? -Pete — Favorite compiler error (from IBM’s RS6000 xlC (C++) compiler): 1748 1500-031: (S) COMPILER LIMIT EXCEEDED [...] Reduce the complexity of the program and recompile.

If you are interested in non-leather shoes for weight purposes, try hiking in running shoes. I used them on my through hike from Linden VA (near Front Royal) south, and found them lighter, more comfortable, and slightly more durable that anything I previously more (Sundowners, lightweights, basketball shoes). If you object to leather for idealogical reasons though, your choices are a bit more limited because all the shoes I used, and I beelieve most shoes use at least some leather or suede in their construction. -Chuck Magee ME-GA ‘93

the best hiking boots i’ve ever had was a pair of beat-up converse sneakers. i highly recommend them. they’re cheap, so if you mess them up or a bear eats them or something, it’s no big deal. they’re very lightweight so you can carry an extra pair in your pack if you think you’ll need one. also they tend to be much easier on your feet. they’re pretty sturdy… i was in the black range in n.m. for three days, often with no trails and very rocky terrain with a pair of converses, and it didn’t get hurt at all except for the two little metal rings on the side which are kind of gratuitous anyhow. –dave — "Once I had a little game I liked to crawl back into my brain I think you know the game I mean I mean the game called ‘go insane’" Jim Morrison
