Jake's first race this weekend!

Categories: running shoes

Question:

Almost exactly 5 months after first lacing up a pair of running shoes, it’s time to finally get a taste of "race day!" I got my number in the mail a little while ago, and I’m all excited about running in the San Francisco – Home Depot 1/2 Marathon this coming Sunday. I’m not really sure what to expect from a real race environment, but from what I hear, I’m in for a bit of a treat.  I hope so… This will be the first time that I’ll be inclined to really dig-deep and push myself hard into the "pain" levels of effort / exertion, at least towards the end (assuming I manage to not injure myself before that!), so it’ll be interesting to see how I manage the mental aspects of really testing my limits, especially when it’s really in an exciting and "competitive" atmosphere. I may just learn something about myself next Sunday… I *think* I should be good for about a 1:41:xx  - 1:43:xx or thereabouts, and that’s how I’ll pace myself, being mindful to not let my excitement pull me at some crazy over-fast pace for the first mile or two. I’ve been kind of beating myself up in training for the last month or so (for a full marathon), which probably won’t help, but then again, maybe it will :::shrug:::  I’ll be sure to let you know!  After my first race, I’ll look forward to compiling my first race report… Posted Via Uncensored-News.Com – Still Only $9.95 – http://www.uncensored-news.com       <<<<<<<   The Worlds Uncensored News Source   <<<<<<<<

Good luck, Jakey-boy! I’ll pace myself, being mindful to not let my excitement pull me at some crazy over-fast pace for the first mile or two.

Yeah, that *everyone’s* plan.   Make sure you actually do it.   Enjoy the pain :-)

Have a great time, Jake– and enjoy the fruits of your training and willingness just to be out there doing it! You’re right to keep in mind the need not to let the enthusiasm and adrenaline of a race (particularly a first race) overwhelm you. Use that rush, don’t let it use you, and you’ll be fine. — Shalom, Peace, Salaam George Grattan

For a first race (and 1/2M to boot) this is a very good time. Nothing to be ashamed of here. Posted Via Uncensored-News.Com – Still Only $9.95 –

Yep, but I’ll tell you now. You’re a marshmallow, and will collapse at mile 2. Bill R.

If you start to get thoughts along the lines of "What the f* am I doing here. We’ll just finish this one but never again" at around 10-11 miles, then it’s too late, you’ve been bitten by the bug :-) Just don’t give up at that point. Hope the race goes as you wish.
