Injury Prone Runner…
Question:
Every time I try to run, I get injured after a few weeks, even with low mileage that I do not increase. This time, I’d like to try increasing my aerobic capacity needed for running by other means and run only once or twice a week. Does anyone have any advice regarding a program that would involve Stairmaster or exercise bike 3 or 4 times a week, and running only once or twice? Is it possible to raise and maintain my running mileage that way? Is this asking for injury or a good way to prevent it? Thanks! Robert
Response:
Robert, First of all, what exactly is your injury? It may be something easy enough to prevent by a change in running style, shoes, miles, running surface, etc. There are too many factors to consider without knowing how you are injuring yourself. Let us know. Thanx! -mike

First off what type of injury? There are too many variables to inquire about. I suggest you start with Runner’s World web page for a suggested start-up program. http://www.runnersworld.com/ It’s very likely that what you are attempting to do, is too much for your current condition. Anyway, review the web pages for proper running shoes and training advice. Is it possible to raise and maintain my running mileage that way? Is this asking for injury or a good way to prevent it?
Depends on your injury. Xtraining, especially non impact type, is very beneficial. OTOH, if you are trying to do too much, too soon, too fast – it will only exacerbate your problems. — Caveat Lector!
