Aching achiles tendons!

Question:

I have recently increased my weekly mileage and have found that my achiles tendons are really stiff and sore the day after a run. This pain vanishes after some stretching and is not a problem while running. Is this a problem, should I not be running?

Naw, you can keep running, but ice your achilles tendons afterwards, This is what I do:     0) stretch     1) run     2) stretch     3) shower     4) ice I found some fluid-filled sleves at the local five-and-dime that were meant for freezing and cooling beer cans.  Cut them open and you can fasten them onto your ankels with big rubber bands.  Beats baggies filled with ice cubes cold. Hi! I also started training for 26.2M this summer and after LSD my achilles tendons were hurting really bad. Then I read in Runners World about this trick: do NOT lace the last holes of your running shoes. This gives your ankle more room to move. I am not sure if this works for everybody, however, my feet have not complained after I did this. I also re-laced my shoes so that the outside lace comes straight from the first hole up to the last and the left lace does all the zig-zaging, going through each hole. Good luck, Steve…

I also suffered sore achilles tendons during the Summer while trianing for a marathon.  I have pulled the right tendon several times over the years before orthotics and therapy cured the problem (although it remains susceptible to injury).  Anyway, I used a regiment of ice and friction massage (like a gentle massage except you are sadistic; the idea is to keep scar tissue knots from forming as it heals).  I found that I could continue running; I noticed the soreness would go away after a couple of miles.  After 6-8 weeks, the pains were gone so that I could start my long run training without trepidation.
