Question:

The archives are really growing, especially after this weekend’s blowout of racing!! I just wanted to drop a note expressing my appreciation for maintaining it. It obviously takes up some time, and you deserve a real rec.running cyber-pat on the back for it. ;-) For those newbies that may not be aware of what I’m talking about, the rec.running race report archives are here (this link is in Layne’s sig line): http://kinder.cis.unf.edu/rec.running — David (in Hamilton, Ont) "And the plaster dented from your fist In the hall where you had your first kiss Reminds you that the memories will fade."                                dashboard confessional http://www.angelfire.com/nc/swstudio/home.html –

:-) Thank you. That’s very nice of you to say. I’d love to say that it’s a burden I’m willing to bear but it’s actually kinda fun. Yeah, I know, I need to get out more. :-) Ya know what really bites – I missed my event! <G I’ll post about it a little later when I catch up. The gallery is growing, too, for those who like pictures with their stories <G. Thanks, Layne The rec.running report archives may be found at http://kinder.cis.unf.edu/rec.running

Yes, Layne, many thanks for dedicating your time to this. I don’t check it that often, but with the race season in full swing, I probably will get there more frequently. And I’ll have more contributions soon. Cam – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The archives are really growing, especially after this weekend’s blowout of racing!! Hey, me too. Layne, I was perusing the archives again Saturday before my race… Those pages are just packed with inspiration and good info, too. Perfect psych-up stuff and so valuable to collect! Sometimes I wanna print everything out and take it to the bathtub… hey wait, I might just do that right now! :) nina

I second this. People like Layne are indeed the salt of the running earth Jonathan

It’s a great resource Layne!   But after the past few days – what’s the capacity like? :-) Anthony.

Response:

GREAT JOG Layne. As a side note: I took my new camera to track practice last night.  I didn’t keep it with me during the drills, but I did get to show some people two of the pictures since they were still on it. After track practice, I tried to run a 200 meter flat out, with the camera and now my shoulder hurts a bit.  Besides that, I could only get 35 seconds even with 5 oz. flats and I thought I was running pretty fast. There is now no doubt that running with a 16 oz. camera slows me down, especially when running faster, but since my age group 45-49 has some real fast runners, I wouldn’t win any trophies even if I didn’t have that camera with me. more facts: 1.  My old camera, the one just like David started with, seems real light, but it is still 11 ounces. 2.  Using an ISO setting of 800 last night completely got rid of the blur of taking pictures while running, but those pictures came out with so much noise (looks like watching a far away TV signal) that they don’t even look good as thumbnails.  They do warn you against using 800 in the manual. 3.  Last Saturday the ISO was set to 200 and I’m going to try 400 next. Note: those numbers are supposed to be just like film speed. Thanks again Layne, I know it takes a lot of time.  Heck for me, even getting one little site ready takes time. Me too – the archives have got me motivated to run about a dozen times these past few months when I felt that I didn’t want to/couldn’t make it/wasn’t ever going to be a runner again.  Layne’s archive provides advice, inspiration and absolute pleasure to r.r people – Kudos Layne! Kay

Response:

<blush as only a redhead can Thank you very much but I’m really impressed and inspired by the people who run these races and then take their time to share the experience with others. The amount of info exchange and support here is beyond anything I’ve seen in Usenet since I started participating in 1982. Doing the archives makes me feel a little guilty because I enjoy them. The archives are going well. I’ve built a couple of beta semi-automated PHP/MySQL systems but it’s faster just to enter the data. So far, we’re in very good shape for disk space, bandwidth, and CPU time. We’re starting to get linked from some of the running sites (www.runnersweb.com and runwildusa.com just to name two). There’s really no way to know how many hits (caches, Web bots, indexers, and the like mess up the number cited on the archive page) but, IMHO, the number of hits doesn’t matter. If some people find it useful (like me) then it’s worthwhile. I’ve mentioned this before but don’t think I can overstate it – the r.r report archives belong to r.r and I’m just keeping them for the moment. Since the reports belong to the author, I’m happy to make any changes or additions to the reports. Again, thank you, Layne The rec.running report archives may be found at http://kinder.cis.unf.edu/rec.running

Layne,

Hi, Ozzie, Been at a workshop on Fierce Conversations up in Seattle since the 5th and just got back this afternoon, in time to assist in a conflict resolution with a CEO and one of his key people.

:-) You have my condolences. Having done a number of conflict resolution workshops with academic types, I feel your pain. So looking back at what I’ve not seen this week, I had to add my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all that you bring and have contributed to rec.running to make it the community it can be and is.

That’s very kind of you and I do appreciate it. Although, I feel that there’s so much to be learned from this group than I’d ever be able to repay. On a semi-related side note, your comment about men running with women in some special races caused to me reevaluate my thoughts on the matter (not a new situation where you’ve caused me to rethink something <G). I’ll get the results of the process posted soon. I think you’ll enjoy them or at least find them, er, interesting. Thank you, again, Layne The rec.running report archives may be found at http://kinder.cis.unf.edu/rec.running
