Running with a colostomy
Question:
I use lycra running pants or shorts. The lycra holds the pouch secure enough for my ileostomy. I run 4 miles, 5 days a week. The only problem I have is with fatigue and dehydration (which seem to go hand in hand). Drink, drink, drink! Very important. After a while you will feel just like you used to before your surgery. Response:
There is a cumberbund device make by Art Sender (see add in Ostomy Quarterly) that does the same thing. it is make out of latex and hold the pouch nicely. In article <7ltm0k$n4…@nnrp1.deja.com>, tanned…@my-deja.com writes:

I am a male, 57 years old, with an ileostomy for 28 years or so. Started jogging a few years after the ileostomy, got down to 7:20 miles for 5 miles (while smoking 2 packs of Kent III’s daily). Then quit smoking, got fat and slow, but continued jogging ( with substantial breaks.) Did my first full marathon 2 years ago, and another last year, and San Francisco this July 11. The ileosomy has had zero effect, plus or minus, on my fabulous jogging career. I don’t know how an ileostomy relates to your type of colostomy, but I can’t see how the colostomy could intefere with your running. As the Nikes say, Just do it! I am interested in hearing from anyone with advice about running with a colostomy. I have had an end sigmoid colostomy(due to colon cancer) for about a year now and am eager to start running again. My doctor says that it is ok. Would love to hear from anyone with a similiar situation. Dianne

I, too, had colon cancer and a colostomy in 1990. I do any activity that I want to do and have since the first few months, including swimming.. I have a suggestion that works for me and probably would work for women too.? I wear an athletic supporter (jock strap) but not in the conventional way. I shift it slightly to the side and place the bag in the pouch. The material of the pouch holds the bag in place and is capable of stretching to accomodate the bag and support the weight if/when it fills with substance. I found long ago that my underwear does not support the bag adequately. Anyway, it works for me.
