I’m a man with ( I think ) a reasonably trim figure and a stoma that’s sticks out quite a bit because of a rupture ( another story), when I dress up I either wear loose fitting clothes or a loose fairly long sweater. I’ve found, and believe that even when wearing fairly tight clothing no one notices. My two bit advice for a woman show your best features face, top, bottom or whatever and at least men and I suspect woun’t notice your belly. Gas noises I don’t know what to about that. It only happens to me when I’m around pretty girls. But then at age 74 you are all pretty. Worry less and keep on chucking. Roy

Mari, The curved clip is just that, it is curved instead of straight. You mentioned that you wear a long bag. Try a shorter bag. You may have to empty often but you will not have the bag folded up and stuffed into your underwear. When I first started wearing ostomy products the hospital gave me the ’standard’ size. Since I’m 5′ 2" and short waisted the pouches were too long. They would fill up and the clip would slide over that ’special’ spot. I didn’t feel like being in the ‘mood’ everytime I walked around so changing to a smaller pouch worked for me. You may want to consider it to help your pouch look smooother under your clothes. Best of luck, Susan VA mari <m…@teknova.com> wrote in message

Hollister has nifty clips that curve to avoid the big straight line. It is bad enough to have a bulge without the clip making it more unatural. They work pretty well too. "mari" <m…@teknova.com> wrote in message

I just received an ostomy 2 weeks ago. I had one 10 years ago for 3 months and it was reversed to a j-pouch. This time, however, this ole bag and me may beome long friends. The problem: I am a successful 46 year old woman. I have sales people reporting to me, I meet with customers, attend products shows, etc, etc. I am in the public about 80% of my working time. I have just tried on all my work outfits and I can see THE BAG!!! And that is when it is relatively empty! What do you do when it starts filling up and expanding and you are talking to someone??? What do you do if you are having lunch and you start farting??? Although the people I work with know my situation, I deal with a lot of first time customers and I don’t want to go into the whole story with them. I don’t want to go into the whole story with my existing customers, either. I would love to hear how you "hide" your bag and how you deal wuth the customer entertaining part. Thanks!

Just a thought— Maybe a swash of material across the front of your business attire would discreetly shield you, as you wish. As far as noises, if they start, simply casually moving your arm onto your lap, then using the lower part of your arm to gently press against your stoma area will help. This also muffles, diminishes the sound volume. Also, sometimes you may joke and say that your stomach is growling. Almost no one knows what a stoma is, so they will think it simply just is your stomach growling, like anyone else’s does. As far as gas, make sure you do not go long periods without eating at least a little bit. An empty stomach/intestines just simply loves to make gas, and will do so any time it is empty. Any thoughts on that beautiful and discreet swash of material? You may appear stunning!!! Best to you—- Ron BTW, people will (not) notice you—-can you remember the bus driver’s hair color this morning?—–don’t be hard on yourself, when no one else is—- (smile) mari <m…@teknova.com> wrote in message

i’m on the opposite end of the long bag fence … i wear a hollister new image mini-bag. i found wearing a long bag left a "bulge" in my pants (not good for girl!). the new image have a very low profile and the cloth cover makes them relatively rustle-proof. a pair of briefs or hi-cut panties worn over the bag (if your stoma is low enough) can help hide the bag (i do that when i have to wear a skirt). helps keep the bag flush to your skin even when it starts to get full. wear outfits that highlight your face, keep people looking up and no one will notice. good luck!
Lauren, she said she has had a j-pouch so she will be a little short gutted with probably higher, more liquid output than the "normal" ileostomy. That was the reason for the longer pouch. She did not mention flat belly or pleasingly plump…<grin> that makes a difference too.

Well, Mari, only men have responded so far to your question. I am a woman and have dressed for 50 years with an ileostomy. I am retired now, but have been a business person where everyone was looking to see what they could see. I am a retired ET and have lectured all over the country aside from working one on one with ostomy patients. Everybody was always looking for the pouch. Watch your sugar intake…makes a lot of gas for most ppl. Applesauce is good between meals as well as saltine crackers. As mentioned, and empty gut makes noises. Most ppl want to wear a small pouch..I found that a long one was better. When the small pouch fills, it is noticeable because it is out front on your stomach. With a longer pouch, the pouch fills lower on the abdomen, leaving a flat belly. As far as what to wear…I always liked over blouses or sweaters with suits or dresses with a jacket. Wear skirts that have soft pleats..something that is not smooth across your belly. Large purses are always handy when you have to slip out at break time. Thigh hi hose have been good too. If you are wearing a 2 piece system, leaving a little air in the pouch will smooth out the ring the flange makes. Good luck Jane

Response:

Mari, I work with the public in retail. I wear close fitting slacks and skirts, even lycra running pants and someone would have to stare real hard, look very close and know about my stoma to see it thru my clothes. Maybe when the pouch needs emptying you might see a lop sided tummy. But with all the tight or close fitting clothes I have no one has ever mentioned anything. I am petite and wear a size 4 womens. Not sure if that makes a difference but perhaps you are feeling a bit self conscience about your ostomy. Since you have only had your ostomy 2 weeks your stoma is swollen and will take some time to find its smaller natural size. That can take several months depending on your situation. Use a curved clip to contour your body shape. Give it some time and try on different outfits. Have family members or close friends ‘look’ for any sign of your stoma. You’ll be surprised at how much you are your worst critic. Take it a day at a time and learn about the new you. I have found it is best not to eat before meeting with customers. The stoma is less active. But do not ’starve’ either, too much air in your system. When you do pass gas it sounds alot like a stomach growling. Empty often if you are concerned about your pouch filling. In the summer I empty more because I do not wear a jacket or sweater. In the winter wear several layers, it will help hide. Soon you will be a pro in no time. Susan VA mari <m…@teknova.com> wrote in message

I cook stuff, but I tend to try and "cheat" if I can. For example, If I do a curry I will buy a ready-made sauce so all I have to do is fry up some diced chicken breast, add the sauce then simmer it while the rice is cooking. If I do a pizza I will buy a pizza base mix rather than mix up flour, yeast, oilve oil etc, so it only requires a few minutues kneading, add the toppings and slam it in the oven. I do other "easy" dishes like roast beef or roast chicken where you just slam it in the oven for 90 minutes or so, and I cheat by using ready basted roast potatoes (no peeling!) and frozen runner beans and gravy mix. Purists might not like "shortcuts", but it sure beats that microwave mush that the supermarkets sell at premium prices.

I usually eat whatever the family is eating. If it’s something totally disgusting to me, I’ll usually get myself something frozen and throw it in the oven/microwave. I can cook pretty well and at times I do (I prefer the all new family kitchen to my old dirty one for obvious reason, the only thing in my own kitchen I really use is the fridge for cooling drinks, lol). I actually like cooking but I hate to clean up the mess I create at the end. Lazy as I am, I’ll usually take some shortcuts and use pre washed and cut salad or something.

since I am on a strict eating plan, my meals don’t require much prep. But, I am an excellent cook. I just don’t cook very much anymore.
Well, I’m not a bachelor, but even when I was (and now, for that matter), I didn’t understand this emphasis on being able to make a meal (which often comes up in here, by the way). I hardly ever use a stove and maybe I’ll use a microwave once a day. For example, here’s a typical microwaved dinner for me: Put a can of Chunky Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup into a large glass bowl, mix in a can of chicken (for the additional protein), microwave the mixture until it’s nice and hot, sprinkle in a bunch of pepper (keeps me from wolfing down the stuff as fast, which helps with trying not to eat too much), and finally I’ll take a roll of Ritz crackers and crunch them up and stir them in (the crackers add 550 calories, if you’re interested). Here are some posts where my "meal preparation" methods show up. I have a feeling that ‘None’ will be able to relate to some of this. If not literally, then in a "chocolate = drugs" and "food = material things" sort of way! ——————————————————————— ——————————————————————— http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=dd95baf2.0208261343.133a…@posting.google.com From: Virgo Cluster (gamma_n…@yahoo.com) Subject: Re: OT – ehhh.. what am i supposed to do with this stuff? Makes me scared what they might be putting in this junk.

I don’t know if it’s because I run it off or what, but I eat *A LOT* of chocolate and chewy-gooey things. But I don’t pig-out like I used to when I was in my early to mid 20’s. Back then I would think nothing of eating a half gallon box of ice cream in an afternoon. There were times that I did this AND ate a whole bowel of unbaked chocolate chip cookie dough (the kind that you mix with two eggs and the "special butter packet" and which makes approx. 36 cookies) AND then later in the evening order a large Domino’s pizza with extra thick crust and extra cheese. This was back when I used to put in a lot of miles running. I’d typically do this after 3 or 4 days of 15+ miles per day, and it’d take a couple of days before the stuff was completely worked out of my system before I could run again. (The cookie dough, however, was usually "processed" and the waste by products expelled in less than 2 hours.) I suspect this was a semi-subconscious way of getting me to take a couple of days off from running. ——————————————————————— ——————————————————————— http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=dd95baf2.0207290321.55dc2…@posting.google.com From: Virgo Cluster (gamma_n…@yahoo.com) Subject: Re: Interesting night Newsgroups: alt.support.shyness Date: 2002-07-29 04:21:15 PST After jogging early yesterday evening, I went home, showered, microwaved some Campbell’s chicken and noodle soup (with lots of extra boiled noodles added in), read some in bed, then went to sleep around 9:30 P.M.
<news:20021004221108.02894.00002455@mb-fr.aol.com>… <snip "night out"> My Friday night started with my waiting for the rain to die down a bit before rushing out to my car (I might have ass-posted once or twice; if I did, it would have been around 5:30 or 6:00 P.M. Eastern daylight savings time), since I didn’t have my umbrella with me. I had already dressed out in my running shorts in my office, so when I got to my car I drove to the other side of campus where the indoor running track is, got out, and went in. I went into a bathroom to wipe my glasses off (it was still raining) and for a pre-run pee, then I walked to the jogging track. Since I ran 12 miles the evening before, with about 75% of it pacing behind who ever was the fastest person on the track at the time, I was a bit tired and sore. I was also worried about going too hard and getting injured, so I ran very very slow. I wasn’t sure how far I’d go — 6 miles, 8 miles, etc. I was going to go by how I felt. I wound up doing 10 miles, but since I was only running at about a 10 minute/mile pace I don’t think I accomplished much besides burning up some calories. But that’s fine, since burning carolies was about the only reason for running last night, given the workout that I did the night before. When I finished running I went to a back corner area and stretched some while watching the other people run by. I actually didn’t stretch very much but I was there for almost half an hour. It’s kind of like watching people while sitting on a bench at a shopping mall, except the girls are wearing tiny stretchy shorts with tank tops which makes it more interesting. I was thinking of stopping by a video store on my drive home (a small town of about 3000 that’s about 15 miles away from the metropolis of 23,000 where I work at), but I saw a bunch of cars in the parking lot and chickened out. Speaking of chicken, there is a Kentucky Fried Chicken place next to the video store and I was thinking of stopping there to get something to eat (I hadn’t eaten all day yet, except for a very small bowel of raison cereal that morning), but I decided that I wanted to avoid all the calories that stopping there and getting something to take home with me would entail. I started thinking that I haven’t had much, if any, meat in several days, and so I thought that I should probably eat something with protein in it. I passed by a grocery store before leaving town, but I was too scared to go in and buy something while wearing my tiny black running pants, especially since it was cold and raining and people would think I was weird wearing something like that on a Friday night in the kind of weather we had. I continued driving and the road that goes through the middle of town opens up into a four lane highway (speed limit becomes 70). About 5 or 6 miles down the road there is a really small town that I sometimes stop at for gas (it’s the only exit that exists on the 15 mile stretch between the town where I work at and where I live). By really small, I mean the population is only two or three hundred. Anyway, I decided to stop there at a gas station that also sells some grocery items (this town has no grocery stores aside from what’s at this gas station) and buy a steak to cook when I get home. There were a few people inside when I went in, so I hurried over to the meat area and picked out a nice big (about 1.3 lbs.) red something or other that only cost $3.50. (I just looked at the wrapper in my trash can. It was a chuck steak, whatever that is.) Then I got a pint of chocolate milk and a Chunky candy bar (these two items were to hold me until I got home), went to the counter and paid for the stuff. When I got home I noticed that my wife had already left for work, so I went ahead and took my wet (sweat + rain) clothes off before putting the steak into the oven. I turned the oven up to 350 degrees, got a metal pan with about 2" high sides, and wrapped the top and sides in tin foil. Then I put the steak on a large plate and with a knife I made several cuts across the steak so that when it cooked it wouldn’t curl up. (I was a cook at a fish and steak restaurant when I was in high school and this was something I learned there.) I put a lot of garlic salt and pepper on both sides of the steak and then I put the steak onto the tin foil-wrapped metal pan and put it in the oven. I grabbed a few tootsie roll midgets and then went to take a shower. (Have I ever mentioned that I like chocolate?) After the shower I looked over some of the videos that we own and decided to watch the original "Star Wars" movie. I don’t think I’ve seen it in 3 or 4 years.
Honestly? I’ll probably sound like a nutcase here…I put on a pair of long john pants, nylon running pants, a dri-fit shirt, a hooded top, gloves, and a ski mask…and I get out there as soon as I get home from work, for an hour a day, regardless of how much snow is on the ground.
Cannabilism. Runners are pretty quick, so you burn off cals just catching them, and they’re lean so there’s not much fat.

My completely non-scientific opinion is that in the hotter months, eating just doesn’t feel quite as comfortable. In the winter perhaps I enjoy a few more bites of food at each meal because it provides a feeling of warmth and satisfaction in a cold dreary season. I bet those bites add up. In the summer, I feel a little fuller and a little less eager for a big satisfying meal by just a little bit, but perhaps that adds up. Thus I carry about 165 lbs in the summer and 175 in the winter on my 6′0" frame. I also exercise less in winter because I can only run 5 m/day, rather than my summer 4-8 m/day plus daily swimming plus occasional biking. I do run farther in the winter, so maybe this balances out the lack of swimming. — Josh in Syracuse (where no one swims in the winter without a health club membership)

I am Muslim and have fasted during Ramadan and continued running. It’s not as difficult as people expect. We refrain from food and fluids from sun up til sun set. Either I time my run so that by the time I am done, I can drink and eat…(lately that’s easy since the break-fast time is around 5 PM where I live.) I usually run 4-5 miles per day. OR I run after my first meal of the evening…which I do not recommend! I don’t like the feeling of a full stomach holding me back, although when I am fasting I cannot eat as much as I’d LIKE to! Some very early birds could (and do ) get a run in before the start time for the daily fast which is about 5:20 where I am. I am not that compulsive.(yet) I run for fitness and stress relief..I do not race. Teresa

Probably the best thing is to run early in the morning on an empty stomach or light snack (gel or bar), then get back in time for a large breakfast. The other thing you could do is run in the evening by eating just a little snack after sunset, run, come back and eat dinner. Also, the further north you are during the fasting period, the better off you’ll be, since the sun rises later and sets earlier at this time of year in the northern latitudes.

Hi Neil Right now in the UK, the fasts are fairly easy so I have ran a few times during Ramadhan. Not sure how I would manage when we get to the stage that the fasts are 19-20 hours long!!! So far (in the last 7 days): A 4 mile run on a treadmill about an hour after eating. It was not bad but I felt that if I pushed hard I would have spewed! A 5 mile slow jog in the middle of the day – easy pace about 9 mins per mile A 5k hard treadmill run in the middle of the day in about 23 mins – this is quite slow for a hard run, but I could feel the effects of lack of food and water, so it wasn’t too bad. I wouldn’t recommend a half marathon while you’re fasting, but I intend to continue running 3-4 times a week and varying this between indoor and outdoor, slow and fast. I’m going to increase my mileage each week and see if this has an effect. I’m also going to increase the distance of the slow jog to 7 this week, 8 next week and 9 the following week all going well. There’s a 10k race the day after Ramadhan so I don’t expect to perform too well but it will be interesting to see if the fasting has had a good or bad effect on the running.

The calendar shifts 11.24 days earlier each solar year, so in the course of 32 solar years, 8 Ramadans will be during the more challanging long-day summer season.
Cannot speak for our Muslim friends who run, but I run on an empty stomach most of the time. In fact part of my prep for a marathon is to do a couple of the long runs after eating something to get used to having food on my stomach when I run (so slow on a marathon I have to take on food while on the course).

Most of us do though, or at least we don’t run immediately after a meal. However, after running on an empty stomach I can have a big plate of food or an enrgy bar just after my run. A runner observing ramadan has to decide whether to run early in the day, some time after breakfast, knowing they can’t eat again until the end of the day. Or, whether to run later in the day, having not had any food since day break, so that they can have a post run meal outside of the fast period but. Colin

Teresa, If I can assume you are a woman, I am curious about something that you may know a bit about. What do Muslim women do about clothing during exercise, either the veil or the long body covering? I suspect that in Western countries they could go without that, wearing a modest exercise outfit while running or exercising but what about in countries with a much stricter interpretation? Do they have a separate gym where all the women inside can dress as necessary to exercise without any problem?

I do wear the veil to work, because I want folks to know that Muslims can be humane, decent, compassionate people…just like them. I wear shorts and a cool max shirt or tights and long sleeves if it’s cold.(I am not so strict about dress during exercise, and I am out doors for about 1 hour total.)
Response:

Muslims abstain from ALL food and fluids during the fast, which is basically from sunrise to sunset. For the whole month. It’s not easy, particularly towards the end of the month. But at least we have food and drink in the evening. Some people around the world don’t have the security of their next meal. Fasting teaches us self discipline and empathy. Teresa

Response:

Actually there was a spot on TV about one Muslim country, perhaps Turkey but I am guessing, where some enterprising person has come up with a long pants/top combination with a quick-drying fabric of some sort suitable for swimming that many women are buying for a trip to the beach there. Not to get too off-topic here but I bet there are plenty of women in Muslim countries that don’t get enough exercise because of these issues. In the long run that is going to be the biggest challenge for those countries’ religious leaders, to allow more political and religious freedom and women’s rights. After hearing so much about that part of the world recently it will be interesting to look at the next Olympics to see how many women athletes they send. Off the top of my head I can’t recall what they do in that regard.

Response:

For a period of my life I fasted from after dinner on Saturday night until breakfast on Monday morning. I did take liquids. Water and unsweetened apple juice. That was tough. More of a psychological battle than anything. That is where the phrase ‘break fast’ probably came from. But in the end I think it may have slowed my metabolism down which is not what I wanted to do. Doing that occasionally is probably good though even if just for health reasons. Most people in America at least are so over-fed and they think that if they miss one meal they are going to die. Sometime later in the year when you are not on your religious fast trying going a whole day like I’ve described. It is much harder.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Muslims abstain from ALL food and fluids during the fast, which is basically from sunrise to sunset. For the whole month. It’s not easy, particularly towards the end of the month. But at least we have food and drink in the evening. Some people around the world don’t have the security of their next meal. Fasting teaches us self discipline and empathy. Teresa

Response:

Not to get too off-topic here but I bet there are plenty of women in Muslim countries that don’t get enough exercise because of these issues.

I would be willing to agree, except that (often) in those countries the women don’t have the luxuries of many electrical appliances we take for granted in the west. (dish washers, washers and dryers). They have to exercise by *default* as it were, because they have to do the physical chores that we have machines do for us. My husbands family never owned a car, or a TV until the mid 1970’s. Their idea of a washing machine was an old wringer type model that our grandparents used to have! So they ended up getting their exercise doing the wash by hand, working their land for crops, walking to and from work or school..and so forth. Nowadays they all own cars, TV’s and PC’s…and eating a western diet they have heart disease, diabetes and other diseases that their forefathers never had. They have Pizza hut, Starbucks, McDonald’s and KFC. What a trade off, eh? If they don’t get enough exercise nowadays it’s by choice! A generation ago it was a different story. In the long run that is going to be the biggest challenge for those countries’ religious leaders, to allow more political and religious freedom and women’s rights.

Women do have rights in Muslim countries. They do vote. Pakistan had a female Prime Minister years ago, (Benazir Bhutto) remember? We have yet to elect a female President! The religious leaders *personally* do not impose or oppress their female populations. Many times it is tribal custom, tradition and culture, more than religion, that combine in an ugly misogynistic stew. Very sad. Teresa

I do wear the veil to work, because I want folks to know that Muslims can be humane, decent, compassionate people…just like them. I wear shorts and a cool max shirt or tights and long sleeves if it’s cold.(I am not so strict about dress during exercise, and I am out doors for about 1 hour total.) I have seen women and girls wear long pants (like a warm ups) and a longer top. They still cover their hair, but if you put it in a bun and wear a baseball style cap, it’s covered. I see a lot of Indian women in their saris and sneakers, walking quite briskly around the parks I run in. but what about in countries with a much stricter interpretation? I am in the US, so hardly anyone cares or looks! The other countries? I don’t know. I am sure they have ladies only gyms.(we have them here, too) Teresa

Response:

Has anyone ever had any paranormal or supernatural experiences while running?

Well, I don’t know if this qualifies. On my long run a few weeks back, I saw and heard this little bahstud while running. Started out as a pain in my harse, then worked his way up to my shoulder for a better view. "You can’t make it, you know!" he shouts in my ear. I’ve known him for years really, nothing unusual in him being around. "Here, feel this" as he orchestrates a twinge in my right knee, then relents. "I can make that last for days if you feel like pushin’ me". "And by the way, your lungs called yesterday, and they’re gettin’ as tired of this pounding as your legs". I allow the rain and cold to squelch him for a good mile or two, thinking he’ll either drown or get bored and move on. Thoughts move on to figuring out why everything on me gets soaked on these runs but my running pants. Defies the laws of physics. He’s having none of the distraction theory though, and I’m startin’ to feel like it’s gonna get messy before we are done with each other. Four miles in and he’s back. "When you were younger, you wouldn’t have even called that a ‘rise’, much less a ‘hill’. See what you’re doing to yourself?". He’s right, as I huff up a gentle rise in the road. My stride shrinks a bit, but I’m steadfast in my pace. In your face, pal. He kicks back and waits for mile six. "Hey sparky, I know your lungs feel great at this point, but that road is awfully hard, yes?". I call him a wanker. He reminds me how warm the bed was this morning. Mile eight is where I’m pretty sure he’s thinking I may have him whupped today, as somewhere in here he decides to rub my nipples raw, just to give me something to think about later. The gift that keeps on giving, I’ll come to find. Somewhere just past mile nine and I’m kicking his harse. Stride is locked and loaded, pavement slips by unnoticed, less than two miles to go, gently downhill. If he’s screaming, I can’t hear him, and at this point it’s a done deal. He’ll not get me today. I pass another runner and I feel something leap off my shoulder. I feel lighter and finish well, but I hear in the distance "… you can’t make it, you know!" He’ll be back. P.

Rob Carr recently posted a link to a couple of his marathon pics(see timer in photos). Rob is a little wider than most marathoners and his times reflect that(Love ya Rob-Wish I had your HbA1c). I suspect that many of the happenings that Rob describes are much more prevalent in that part of the pack. Traffic control breaks down, hydration problems occur, many more individuals running outside their conditioning envelope, etc. The effort of the back-o-the-pack folks is valiant and commendable, but they are probably more ripe to the experiences Rob describes.

Good point. More "contact time" for something to happen. I’m out there and if something is going to happen, I’m in the group where it’s most likely to happen and I’ve also got more time to come across it – unlike the 2:15 marathoners. Then again, the guy hit in Kona was a decent marathoner – just stuck at the back of the pack. If I remember right, he finished in under 3 hours, including the time EMS spent bandaging him and having a nasty head lac. I may be wrong on the exact time, because I wasn’t halfway done when he finished. Your explanation makes sense. Except this went on even when I was 130-140 lbs. from 1980 to 1985 and ran 5 and 10K races. I was in a much better percentile back then and it still happened. Now, I was more willing to stop and offer help than a lot of people – that may have increased the probability that I’d see something. I’m not going to bring up the precognitive events in my life. A little too weird for rec.running. I think Google will turn up the strangest of them, and there’s still living witnesses to that one. Especially bizarre because time travel can’t possibly happen: because CPT is naturally violated – you could never return to the past that was, only the past that wasn’t. And then there’s my career as a paramedic. "Have weirdness, Rob and his crew will respond." My all-time favorite quote: "Don’t tell me how to run a cardiac arrest! I’m a doctor! You’re just (looking up for the first time)…my ACLS instructor." (The doctor reconsidered and decided that defibrillation was not the appropriate algorithms for normal sinus rhythm. Gosh, I wish I’d had a tape recorder going….) Second Place: "Every time I call 911, you show up and cut off my pants." Third Place: "Didn’t you say my heart would start beating again in 30 sec.? Is this something I should be worried about?" (Adenocard – as if it weren’t obvious. And yes, I learned to position the monitor so the patients couldn’t watch it anymore.) Fourth Place: "NO!" (Said by man in physician witnessed cardiac arrest and v-fib on the monitor while he grabbed my collar, pulled himself up to my face and screamed, just as I was about to hit the little red buttons to put 200 through him. We did get him back.) Like I said, those around me have gotten used to weirdness accumulating in my neighborhood. Rob

NO WAY!!! Im one of those guys in the back, and I will tell you the T-R-U-T-H, Robs level of riduculous overacting, overdramatizations, and outright psychotic overthinking of every subject, just maybe his way of coping with a sport that is obviously beyond his pyhsical capabilities. That just hasn’t sunk into his pea-sized brain yet. A cramp isn’t a cramp, it’s a mioloma pebrada, and a stomach ache is a digestive disruptous.
I concentrate on my breathing while I’m running and it brings me into almost a hypnotic state. I repeat (in my mind) 1-2-3, 1-2-3, with more stress on the 1, and before you know it, I’m going further and further into myself. It is easier to acheive this state when I am running by myself, with no one around for miles. I feel my conciousness sinking, as if my brain were actually inside my legs, and the built in speedometer I have is telling me I am doing well. At some point, usually over a bridge, or some other landmark, my brain will resurface, I’ll look at my watch, and I will see that I have reached that milestone earlier than I have in the past!

It’s no wonder I’m constantly hosing blood and hair off the grill of my car. I am just guessing here, but I think the "supernatural experiences" are caused by a lack of usable oxygen to the jogger’s already vulnerable mind. It’s always a good rule of thumb to be in the "here and now" when jogging across the street….especially in front of my Trollsmobile.

Response:

Has anyone ever had any paranormal or supernatural experiences while running?

It depends on how you define paranormal. In most races, someone will drop over, fall, or get hit by a car while I am nearby – without me doing anything to provoke it. It’s especially annoying in the Pittsburgh Great Race – the only time I didn’t lose at least 5 minutes was when I was running as part of the 20th Anniversary Pittsburgh Paramedics Team. One time I stopped to help a woman who tripped and got a bad case of road rash – what I didn’t know was about a minute in back of us, someone had gone into cardiac arrest. I think the medics got him back. The turn off of Forbes onto (is that Margaret Morrison?) to Fifth is notorious for <thud <wet slide as skin comes off <scream. Pittsburgh Marathon: I think it was about the 15 mile marker. The amateur radio operator stationed nearby was Jerry – I forget his callsign because he gets a new one more often than I get running shoes. Anyway, this woman just ahead of me got a leg cramp. She let loose with the worst scream I have ever heard – and I’ve put hip fractures in a traction splint! Jerry was able to call for an ambulance, and I didn’t have to stop long. I don’t remember seeing anything too serious at any of the Pittsburgh Marathons I worked, either as a paramedic or amateur radio operator. Only when I run, I guess. One year, we were watching out for a liver transplant patient. I was working the amateur radio at the Aid station, and she showed us her transplant scar as she went past both times. Kona Marathon: A group had accumulated around me to run because I was an "experienced" (i.e. one previous) marathoner. I explained to them that sometime soon, we would come upon someone injured. They’re looking at me like I’m nuts, and a few people even commented that maybe I was a little paranoid. It was just then that we turned a corner and saw the runner who’d been hit by a car. EMS was already on-scene, so we didn’t have to stop – the guy had a messy head injury, but finished the race! Everyone around me wanted to know if there was anything else I needed to tell them before we got any farther…. I don’t remember anyone getting injured at the NK10K. I guess it doesn’t happen every race. The string goes back to the early 1980s, and was the reason I wound up in EMS. I took some classes because people kept getting hit by cars or falling over dead just as I walked by or ran in a race. Once I got hired as a paramedic, the off-duty weirdness stopped. Not that there wasn’t 10 times as much on-duty weirdness to make up for it. No one who was running with me ever was involved. Quantum connectedness, I guess. Dirk Gently would be pleased. Rob

Has anyone ever had any paranormal or supernatural experiences while running?

No, but… Before I took out the big newsgroup-filter whupping stick to them, reading any post by our resident trolls was what I consider to be a paranormal experience. Just about every oxygen-depleted stride of the last 10K of my most recent marathon seemed marginally supernatural, and I am pretty sure I saw Bigfoot a couple of times, possibly even handing out water at an aid station. Of course, this is New Orleans, so maybe that was a case of mistaken identity. Finally, if I ever do see aliens, vampires, angels or a troll who actually runs, you may rest assured I will henceforth be running. Chris

Response:

Hi Brian and Kimberli, I keep having these incredible telepathic moments. Later, right towards the end of my route, I will have the telepathic moment. Something inside my brain will say "Come on Richard, give it a good kick! You are strong, fast, and you will do better today than you did yesterday". My telepathic powers aren’t always right, but I don’t mind – I’m working on being right more often. The real proof that this is a paranormal experience is that my normal time for my Nobleton run is 1:15′ish, and yesterday I finished it in 1:13. Paranormal is latin for ‘outside’ normal, so this is proof positive that there are many forces of nature which we don’t 100% understand. You’ve probably been running longer than I have – I’m a bit surprised that you haven’t had any paranormal events. I’m sure you have, I guess you just didn’t see them that way. Keep on running and enjoy life – it’s way too short! Richard Rogers http://SQLSolutions.ca/

I remember when I mapped out a 2 1/2 mile loop near my home. I would run a block or so and have to walk. It took about 3 months before I could jog the whole way without stopping. That was seven years ago. Today I’m still slow but getting faster. I’m running a 1/2 marathon today in hopes of beating my personal record of 2:07. I’ll run my fifth full marathon on Memorial Day weekend. I love running more than a block at a time and remembering when I couldn’t. Thanks, Roger, for reminding me of all of the pleasures of this journey.
I remember when a 4:00 kilometre seemed impossibly fast to me. To run 5 in a row, or 10 (!!) was beyond comprehension. Now it’s more or less my marathon pace. It’s amazing what the human body can adapt to.

Cool David. I had to stop and think a while… I mean what does a 4:00 kilometre mean in miles but then I realized, just mulitply it by 5 and it means a 20 minute 5k. Yep, that still is beyond my comprehension. ;-) The last pictures I took during a race were with an ISO setting of 200. I wonder what will happen if I try 400 or 800. It is supposed to make the shutter speed faster, but I wonder how much I will loose. I know now I need more training runs with a camera because I can’t experiment very well during a race.
Every year at the Bix (www.bix7.com), they bring in both Bill Rodgers and Joan Benoit Samuelson. As a matter of fact, that is one of the last things they do before starting the race, the drive them both up to the starting line in a limo. The last two years Joan has beat Bill, but last year it shows them crossing the finish line at the exact same time, yet the times still have her ahead. I wish they still had that story posted at the above URL but they have changed that URL so much I can’t find any of the old stories on it. Thanks, Roger

[snip] From a beginner: First 5K event. First 3 mile run without walking (I know this shouldn’t be a milestone but it was). First severe injury that kept me from running (torn calf muscle). First 10K event. First time I finished an event with Susan (wife). First sub 30 minute 5K (something about those round numbers). First time a stranger asked to run with me in an event ("What are you – crazy?"). Still looking forward to the milestones and hope that I’m aware enough to note them.
Fun. I remember when: I only ran 50 yards at a time. — only one or two days a week. I completed my first continuous mile run in my return to running. — first 30 minute run — first 10k — first 90 minute run (for some reason the 60 minute didn’t register) — the first time I referred to a 30 minute run as ‘easy’ or ‘light’. Wrestling my way, including a fair amount of walking, up a Hill in my first race. These days, that same hill is just a hill and I run the whole thing even at the end of 10+ mile runs.
I remember when i used to use shoe laces that needed to be tied. In my second ever race, one of my laces came untied and i had to stop to tie it. i cursed that totally avoidable situation for quite some time. then i noticed that other runners double-knotted their laces…hmmmmm. more recently, i bought a few of those elastic laces with lace locks. life is sweet…. these are the best things next to sliced bread. i remember when i used to wear cheap cotton t-shirts in my races. now i have a neat little wardrobe of Coolmax and similar types of running shirts. nothing else will do. i remember when i used to make fun of the runners who wore tights ("i wouldn’t be caught dead in those things"). now i prefer them to running pants or regular shorts. i remember when i used to hate wearing hats. i won’t normally wear a hat, but i always wear one while running. hey, i think i look OK wearing a hat now. the race photos are proof :) i remember when it was a big deal for me to do some form of exercise three times a week. now i get antsy if i can only RUN three times per week (with other sports on the other days).
Mark, Depending upon how desperate you are for a dry surface (it’s been a long time since early October , many of the paved streets in Palmer are dry – as is most of the bike path past the high school, but I think the path along the Palmer-Wasilla Hwy is still grim. Gravel streets are still patchy ice, and trails (Crevasse-Moraine, Moose Range) are definitely still in snowshoe category – or running on about 1 inch loose snow. Dot

Response:

Mark, I don’t know of any clear paths yet. I keep watching the one along the Glenn Hwy and in patches it’s clear but not for any complete stretch. In my neighborhood there are getting to be a majority of streets with some clear streaks but you’d have to want to run in the middle of the road I found it wasn’t too bad to run on the 1-2" snow areas if you watch your footing, but if you want to keep fast pace this wouldn’t suit. Would the first AK runner who finds a clear path please post? Thanks! Chrystal (aka AKQuilter)

Thank you, thank you thank you. This is the post I was hoping for.

I should have made my comments after I got back from running this evening If you had this evening’s stiff breeze (won’t give it credit for being a wind after last week’s 50mph) + brisk temperatures, you may want to keep with the mid-weight gear and not break out the light-weight stuff just yet – although I did use my lighter weight gear Tues night. Good footing is getting close! Dot

I was wondering what sort of shoe to get to run in this ice/snow/melting mess we have (in AK)

I’m not sure how much ice, etc you have left (we’re about 98% snow/ice free on my usual path except a couple patches), but I normally run in my Saucony Grid Stabils year round (these have triangular lugs and reasonable traction on cold ice, not this warm ice), but I may re-consider my NB904 next winter in slushy weather – after I’ve gotten them broken in a little more. We’re so warm right now (yea, I know it was +9F this am, but it’s warm in pm), I wouldn’t worry about any winter shoes. I usually let my biomechanics (overpronation) / fit be the controlling factor on what shoes I wear – with possible adjustments for trails / slush, etc although so far I’m not sure I’ve been able to improve on my Saucony’s (just starting to experiment). If you have water on top of ice, I would avoid that at all costs. That stuff is pretty close to frictionless. My little hill is almost past that stage. I generally walk on the snow berm to get by it or put my strap-on studs to walk past it. Then resume running. and what sort of layers you recommend.

For these temperatures, you can probably use running pants from Sears or someplace similar (about $20). If you’re going to do longer distances, I would get something not cotton. This winter I used SportHill XC’s with various layers: no tights above +20 or +35F, tights from about -5F to +20 or +35 (depending on wind), fleece layer below -5F or when doing triathlon at +1F or training for tri below +20F (windchill on legs cycling at high cadence is significant). During most of the winter, I used an REI Switchback Gore-Tex parka (designed for hiking, etc, not running) over powerdry zip mock down to about 0F and added an expedition thermax layer below that (think -17F may have been coldest run). BUT now that I’ve got a lighter weight shell, I may change those layers, but won’t know until I experiment. And right now am using lighter weight shells with powerdry. I’m still experimenting at these temps. Last year I just wore cotton sweats under a supplex shell (very breathable) that airlines lost, so I’m having to discover what works again. We’ve been so close to having decent footing for over a week, that I can almost taste it – then it snows again, but melts rapidly. We only had about 8 inches when Anchorage had 30. And we still have lots of snowshoeing around. Good luck! Dot

PS: I would go to Skinny Raven’s in Anchorage for shoes. I’ve been pointed there several times, and their people are knowledgeable.

Thank you, thank you thank you. This is the post I was hoping for. We still have a decent amount of snow on the sides of the roads but the sidewalks are pretty clear. There is a good bit of mud/frozen mud around but it is getting better. I guess that is why I want to get outside! I have been looking at the XC pants you mentioned and I think I am going to go tomorrow for something like that. I have top layers I can work with.
Hi! I’m 15 and my team is about to have a vote to decide if we get to run in shorts or bikini-type bunhugger briefs. Whichever we choose will be mandatory for practice and all meets for two years. Currently we run in shorts but many of the girls are getting behind the bunhuggers. They say they’re more comfortable but to me they look too skimpy. How should I vote?

Assuming you mean a high school team, be aware that a team was disqualified a few years ago in FL for wearing briefs at the state meet. "Inappropriate attire".

Embee, I’m not going to suggest one or the other. Consider the options and vote whichever way *your* informed perspective on the matter dictates, knowing that ultimately you’ll have to go with the majority. There’s no need for everyone to vote the same way. Of course, I don’t know how important it is for you to be on the same wavelength as the other girls on this question.
Ah, so? Interesting! Yet, it has been fully acceptable in girls’ high school volleyball for close to a decade? Is there a difference in appropriateness? Mary

I don’t think she’s talking about tights. I think she’s talking about the underwear looking things a lot of girls race in. I could see racing in them, but practicing in those things might be a bit much – not to mention discouraging heavier runners from going out for the team. -jeff

shorts or bikini-type bunhugger briefs. Whichever we choose will be mandatory for practice and all meets for two years.

Why would they be mandatory for practice? I’ve never seen anyone wear bunhuggers for practice. For that matter, I’ve never seen any high school team train in their racing outfits except for team warmups maybe. Currently we run in shorts but many of the girls are getting behind the bunhuggers. They say they’re more comfortable but to me they look too skimpy. How should I vote?

I’m a guy so I don’t mind the look much, though not everyone looks good in them. I wouldn’t want to wear them if I was a girl though; I’m the kind of guy who keeps his shirt on in hot weather. If you feel that they look too skimpy, you’re not the only one. Marion Jones, in her biography, states that she has never worn and refuses to wear bunhuggers and I applaud her being so sure of herself. She wears the bike short type of running pants. My friend’s university team is getting new uniforms and she’s stubbornly against getting the bunhuggers and says that she’ll refuse to wear them although others on the team want them. Anyways, it doesn’t seem like it would be fair to leave it to a simple majority rule vote if there are some girls who absolutely don’t feel comfortable wearing them, though I can see them caving in to peer pressure. An alternative, that may or may not work depending on your school and local h.s. federation rules, would be to allow a choice between bunhuggers and shorts or bike shorts, like how the U.S. international team members have a choice of different types of team racing suits that still match. If you really feel that they are too skimpy, it’s o.k to be stubborn about it and speak your mind in addition to placing your vote.
I think you should not only vote for shorts (since that’s what you indicated you preferred), but also talk to the coach about how you think the bunhuggers are too skimpy. Personally, I’m sure that wearing bunhuggers would have distracted me from my running in high school– worrying that if I looked too good, guys would be drooling, and if I didn’t look good in them, people would be laughing. On a different note, I find it funny that Marion Jones refuses to wear bunhuggers, but would pose nude for an ad.
It should be mentioned that the coach in question was warned *before* the race that they were prohibited, didn’t tell the girls or their parents, and let them wear them anyway.
Rudiger, Here my take on it: Buns = buttocks Hugger = something that hugs Briefs are tight, so they hug the buns Daniel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I would check with you high school rules. Some ban the bunhuggers (a school in FL a few years ago lost the state title because they were wearing the bunhuggers and were against the rules).
