Race Report: Green Bay Marathon
Question:
Well, I did it… Despite Bill "the Jackass" Rodgers rude and totally expected comment, I finished. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be (here come the "I told you so"’s LOL. But hey, the most valuable things in lofe are learned by mistakes so I am pretty sure I’ll be more prepared come September (Fox Cities Marathon). As far as my splits. I was averaging right around a 11 minute pace up until mile 13 (i crossed the half -marathon point at about 2:40 if i am not mistaken (i accidentally reset my watch after the a mile down the road from that point. Couple things i learned from the race.. 5. WEAR SUNSCREEN (i looked like a sore tomato after the race) 4. metallica does NOT work for running music 3. Buy a pair of Spandex (i never thought I would say that but I am NEVER wearing shorts for that kinda distance ever again. 2.Bring MORE FOOD…(they had plenty of water , but oranges just don’t cut it) 1. TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN so anyways, things worked out… My next race is a 10k on June 14th (the week before my wedding WAHOOO). it’s the bellin run up in GB. Hoping to break 50 this time.

Hey liar, guess what? They post the names on the net, and yours isn’t there. Just like I said, he didn’t finish, but came out of the woodwork after I posted yesterday that he was a dork, or probably dead. Bill R. OO

Pretty tough learning experience but now you really *know*, and haven’t just heard it from someone else, which as you say, is valuable experience. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – As far as my splits. Congratulations on toughing out the rest of the race and on already setting yourself new goals. For some, a marathon is a "never again" experience. Sounds like you’ve got the right attitude to do *much* better next time. Regarding Bill, just killfile the dork and be done with him. His chaff to wheat ratio is *way* too high in my opinion to justify downloading his messages. He feeds off of any attention, negative or positive. Publically venting you spleen at him will only make him happy. Tim — It’s only Usenet. Nobody dies.

You didn’t do a very good search. His bib # was 117 and he finished in a spectularly slow 6:40. Maybe, you checked before he finished. Anyhow, congrats Kevin. But, man, for somebody aiming for 50 in a 10K, that marathon time is pathetic – training or no training. Yes, I never expected the loser to crawl in at over 6 hours. I can walk a marathon faster than that with NO training. My grandma came in in under 6 hours, even though she busted a wheel on her walker at mile 16. But, man, for somebody aiming for 50 in a 10K, that marathon time is pathetic – training or no training.
Like I said, ANYONE can do better than that with no training. Bill R. OO

Despite Kevin’s admittedly lame preparation for a marathon, I think he deserves credit for his stand-up attitude in returning here to report on his experience, and for learning and listing 4 quality lessons learned that may be useful to other new distance runners (can’t count the obvious Metallica conclusion). Kevin, if you do, in fact, train hard this summer and apply your lessons learned, and if you go ahead with the September marathon, you’ve got a good chance of making dramatic improvement. Just remember that the TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN lesson is exponentially more significant than the other ones. Take care during your recovery. chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well, I did it… Despite Bill "the Jackass" Rodgers rude and totally expected comment, I finished. Only after I publicly called him on it, then he *mysteriously* appears the next day with his report. Credit for being a whimpie 6 plus hour walker. Bill R. OO

It’s good to hear you survived – and are willing to learn! Couple things i learned from the race.. 5. and at least as important, RECOVER, RECOVER, RECOVER. Remember – even the elites can’t train unless they recover. Lyndon summarized it in the junk miles vs speedwork thread: optimal improvement comes from stressing the system then resting them. Or push, then backoff. Google through some of the training threads here or find some training background on the web. RECOVER from this event first, but remember that Fox City is only about 4 months away and many marathon training schedules are at least that long. And you’ll get the food and fluids issues figured out for yourself while you’re doing your long runs – your experiment of one. The function of long runs is time on legs as well as figuring out what for you for fluid, food, and clothing. And good luck. Nice effort Kevin and undoubtably an experience you can build upon for the next 26.2. Good luck in your upcoming 10k and training for Fox Cities. Have a great Honeymoon. Good to hear you finished. Hopefully your lesson can be passed onto others considering a marathon run on less than adequate training.
