All, Hello!! I am new to the forum. I would like to do a poll on what music people use to run. Here are some below that I like. Problem is….after a few weeks it gets old and I need some more ideas. So drop what your doing, grab your mp3 player and copy down what you have queued up for your next run. 1. Zwan – Honestly 2. Marilyn Manson – Rock is Dead 3. Weezer – The World has turned 4. Smashing Pumpkins – Geek U.S.A 5. Creed – Higher 6. Beastie Boys – Sabotage 7. Beck – Mixed Business 8. Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the Name of 9. Fatboy Slim Remix of – Magic Carpet Ride

You must be a yankee. Down here in the south I don’t need music, I get plenty of noise from the horns of fat ass rednecks in ford four wheel drives trying to run me down

Response:

…. So drop what your doing, grab your mp3 player and copy down what you have queued up for your next run.

…. you’re more likely to get some responses if you were to rephrase that more as a request rather than telling people to drop what they are doing. but, anyway, do a google search on this group. there have been at least half a dozen threads on this topic this year. jobs

Response:

I’m sure everybody realizes that I am not demanding they drop what they do. I just thought this would be a fun thread, and being new to the group I haven’t seen the dozen other threads on this topic this year. Sorry if i offended anyone. Please continue what you are doing

of course everyone does. it’s just a matter of how you phrase it. with your original query, you are unlikely to get a lot of responses. people are always willing to help, but only if you’re nice. I just thought this would be a fun thread, and being new to the group I haven’t seen the dozen other threads on this topic this year.

did you search? i found one from the last month: (also check the way he’s phrased his query.) http://groups.google.com/groups?q=g:thl3984119371d&dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=U… you can use this to do more searches: http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=g:thl3984119371d&dq=… Sorry if i offended anyone. Please continue what you are doing

no offense taken here. just trying to be helpful. jobs

When I run I listen to live Phish songs. They are great because many of the songs are 15 and 20 plus minutes. So in only a few songs you have run up to 1 hour. Crosseyed and Painless, Talking heads cover Sand You Enjoy Myself Wolfmans Brother Harry Hood and a bunch of other Phish songs. Good stuff I tell you. Tom

It helps me zone out and next thing I know, the run is over.

It has some of the aspects of a triathalon in that the three events are very different kinds of running; beach, mile, and urban 5K. The events are all started at 7:30, either a.m. or p.m. This meant that the tide for the beach run could be high, low, or anywhere in between. Beach Run: The clouds came in about 4:00 p.m. Until then, it was HOT and humid. After the clouds came in it was just humid. There was a threat of thunderstorms (it is summer in Florida, after all). Susan joined me for the Tour *DAY* Pain this year. Our neighbor from the Bridge of Lions run also joined us. I’m blessed with a bladder the size of carry-on luggage but Susan and our neighbor needed to make a nature stop before the run. All of the toilets were padlocked except for one (count ‘em 1) port-o-pot. The line was very long and, according to Susan, the interior was nasty as a north Arkansas outhouse. They returned a couple of minutes before the start. The tide was low but there was a sandbar down the middle of the course. It was not a big deal but there wasn’t much else to bitch about. The traction was nonexsistent – normal for a beach run. The beach was wide so it only took 8 seconds for me to get from the back to the start line. I was running along with Susan until Daniel Boone’s illegitimate relative cut across our bow for the first time. He was heading for the water but corrected his course and cut across us again. I mentioned that a straight line was the shortest distance to the finish (yes, I knew that isn’t always true but I didn’t have time to talk exceptions with the boy). He said something along the lines of "You’re excused." Wrong response. I pulled in behind him and "drafted" for a while – only speeding up when he started blazing a new trail. He asked if I would like to come around and I mentioned that I was very happy where I was, thank you. At the turnaround, he pulled off to one side to drink his water. I was still processing the situation and picked up the pace just a little. Oddly enough, I caught up with people who normally finish 4 or 5 minutes ahead of me in 5Ks. One of them is a friend from UNF. He seemed genuinely surprised to see me – "Hi, Layne. What are you doing here?" About that time, I met Susan who hadn’t reached the turnaround so I cheered for her. It was very weird to be running with this pack. As we neared the finish, the entire group started speeding up (this doesn’t often happen at the back). For some reason, so did I. Some hairy thing deep inside told me not to let any of these unworthy beings pass me before the finish line. One did but I passed 7. Totally breezarre. I finished off the shoulder of my friend from UNF. The number of people with almost the same time as me was very unusual. Another UNF friend had just gotten some sports drinks for us and wanted to know what I was doing up there. We stood around and chatted until I saw Susan approaching the finish line. I grabbed some sports drink for her and our neighbor and met Susan at the end of the exit chute. She got an AG 1st. Our neighbor came in several minutes later and looked like death warmed over. We left early to get him home. Two young women felt sympathy pains for him and fertilized the sea oats. Yep, the Tour dait Pain. Splits: Mile Time MHR AHR Start :08 67 60 2 18:26 170 155 4 19:13 178 165 (no markers at mile 1 or 3) Mile Sizzler: There were three heats: BOF males, studster males, and all females. I really liked this since I had a chance to see others run. They had the BOFs go first to make sure that none of us kicked off before the event. After last year’s disappointing run I decided to screw the even splits and go for the reguritation. Oops. There really is a reason why people keep going on about even splits. In the last quarter mile, I messed up and allowed myself to get caught in a box. This run is over so quickly that there isn’t time to work one’s way out fo that situation so I dropped back a bit and came around on the outside. I think this was one indication of how out of it I was since watching the interactions among runners is one of my favorite activities during an event. Early on I had visions of a massive kick to the finish since there was an avenue of screaming fans leading to the line. No kick from me which was made even worse by mothers hiding their children’s faces and the horrified looks on the faces of the other spectators. Checked my shorts but they were fine. Susan got an AG 1st. Tough run (it *was* the Tour dhey Pain). Splits: Distance Time MHR AHR .25 1:46 178 120 .5 1:56 173 164 .75 1:54 177 167 1 2:01 174 169 (boxed, my fault) Jacksonville Landing 5K: A few people only run the Beach 4 Miler and one or two people only run the Mile Sizzler. However, a bunch of people usually run the 5K. About noon an East coast sea breeze front collided (or use your favorite violent meteorolgy term) with a Gulf coast see breeze front. In other words, it started to rain and the temp dropped like a calculus book at a frat kegger (sorry, Terry). The conditions were near perfect since the light rain kept the temps down and the blood suckers at bay – it even helped with the mosquitoes. OK, there was a little lightning but some say that a good electric jolt helps with depression. There are some that feel living in Jax is depressing so the lightning was really a good thing. Plus, the light rain ended 30 minutes before the run started. We lined up for the start and noticed that everyone was soaking wet. The humidity was beyond high. Susan and I had crept forward during the prestart position dance. We started in a pretty good pack and stayed there for the entire run. The weather cooperated and no one (that I saw) worshipped the hedges. The first mile had the newbies doing the sprint for 40 feet and then pant for a while, sprint for 40 feet and pant for a while. There were a few newbie DNFs – no medical attention required. The turnaround/water station was next to a park where a Latin music festival was in full swing. I hadn’t considered Salsa as running music but it worked. The trip back was pretty uneventful except for dodging people who were fading fast. We met a few people from out of town who were here just for the event (sick puppies) and ran with one woman for quite a while. She got caught in an unfortunate line around a corner and we lost her. Quite a few of the people around us had a hard time with some of the corners even though they weren’t overly difficult. Susan and I cruised on in (Tour day Pain?) and headed for the grub. Two of our friends were waiting with cups of water (gotta love those speedsters). Susan got a AG 1st. LOTS of socializing while waiting for the awards ceremony (just in case Susan nabbed iron). Before the run I visited with the guy I surprised by running with him at the beach run. He wanted to know if I was going to push it and what pace I was planning. <VBG I told him that I thought I could do a 24 minute 5K if I pushed it. He looked at me but didn’t have the chance to convert my 4 mile time … read more »

That’s not so bizarre. You’ve had a enough time to recover a bit from Calgary and you’re stronger as a result of that race. And you can stop pretending you aren’t competitive by nature… <g Mike Tennent "IronPenguin"

The weather was great although it might have scared off some people. The socializing at the end of the 5K kinda tops it off. Susan won a gold (colored) AG 1st place medal to go with the nice TdP finisher’s medal. We all headed for home happy and a little sore. The soreness was appropriate because, after all, it was the Tour deigh Pain. Layne The rec.running report archives may be found at http://kinder.cis.unf.edu/rec.running

Just couldn’t figure that one out. Again say congrats to Susan, wow, getting the gold-(colored) medal!! Are you going to have Bob Roll pronounce the name of the Tour for you??
The race slut’s back! The down side is there are also midweek bike races. Ya know, retirement could be interesting. Swimming, yeah, that’s the ticket. I’m glad you enjoyed the report. Thanks! It’s one of my favorite events. Doing three such different events is a hoot. The mile event is getting so popular that they may have to move it to a larger area. "fertilizing the sea oats" is "delivering street pizzas" without any streets. The heat and humidity can do strange things. Bob Roll is a god. I even had velonews.com going on Sunday when USA OLN was corrupted by CBS.
I hope your flood situation calms down a bit. It’s been raining here every afternoon for the last 3-4 weeks but it doesn’t flood much around here – just north where the ground is clay instead of sand. I’ll have to work on it. There’s a 5 mile beach run coming up in two weeks.
We’re in a dry spell now, wind shifted to "from California" instead of "from Mexico". So no more wet until it shifts back (maybe later in the week.) We usually get one or two really good "toad-stranglers" each monsoon season. Just had an early and really hard one this past week! Only trouble is the temps are creeping back up, 103 today, maybe more tomorrow. But drier. I plan to run after work tonight, see how it is. Teresa in AZ

LOL. Don’t he? His TV ads/promotions are classics although I missed the ones from last year. They weren’t finger puppets but his toy cyclists were a hoot. Although I did feel for K. Gum when BR started talking about mowing his lawn "stark raving nekkid." Now there’s a man who *should* be running. While I love USA OLN we need to take their Web people and beat them severely, preferably during a sporting event.

That’s good news. 103 AND toad-stranglers. Sheesh. We did a duathlon today – swam a long run in very high humidity. With the fires in Canada and France and the typhoon about to hit Japan or China, the Florida daily rains are not too big a deal. Good luck with your repair cross training.
Ah, but it cools down a lot during the storms. Yesterday it was indeed 103, but the humidity had dropped to only 20%. Now the temps are dropping (high 90’s next few days), but the humidity is going up. I think I actually prefer the hot and dry, except for the fact that we need the rain so badly. I like it- "swim a long run"! I’ve done that before, yick! Teresa in AZ

I can’t even imagine it (20%). During today’s run there was fog coming off the lawns. Fog coming off the streets after a rain is no big deal – happens every day.
Believe it or not, 20% humidity around here is considered wet. We have months where it’s single-digit. However, during the summer monsoons it gets more humid, I think it was in the 50%s during yesterday’s run. I have seen the AC in the car spew fog during a t-storm. We were shocked!
Wow. Anything below 50% around here is worth comment. The AC fog is kinda expected. The orchids here have gone nuts. On my run today, I stopped several times to check out some fallen limbs. Then I took some time to carry the orchids home – good thing it’s a loop route. Toward the end of the run I came across a neighbor who was having some limbs trimmed. They were covered with Green Fly orchids. I talked to the owner and the tree crew about saving some of the orchids. They not only waited while I went and got my car (high tempo run home) but wanted some for themselves. That was great since I’d rather people get involved in saving the little suckers. Here’s a URL for a picture of the orchids. They’re little. http://curly.cis.unf.edu/pics/orchids/epilog2.jpg Some of the spikes this year were almost 2 feet long. I’ve even looked at IBM’s microdrive ut thought that might be a bit overkill.
Hi Layne- Sorry for the reply delay, I forgot to mention that I was going to be in CA for a week. But I’m back now. So, those little green orchids are parasitic? Thanks for the picture, they *really are* green! And kudos for saving the little guys! We obvioulsy don’t have anything like that here, they’d die of dehydration in no time flat. Are they endangered due to the trees disappearing?
Sorry for the reply delay, I forgot to mention that I was going to be in CA for a week. But I’m back now.

I hear that travel broadens one’s view of the world – or at least provides new running routes. … So, those little green orchids are parasitic? Thanks for the picture, they *really are* green!

They’re kinda parasitic in that the roots go under the outer layer of bark. The question is whether the orchids really do use nutrients from the tree (most people say No). I’ve grown quite a few on mats with no trees. They are also fond of living with resurrection ferns that store water in their roots. The orchids "borrow" water from the ferns during the dry periods. Neat little florals. And kudos for saving the little guys! We obvioulsy don’t have anything like that here, they’d die of dehydration in no time flat. Are they endangered due to the trees disappearing?

They are listed as endangered. The orchid community puts the running community to shame when it comes to over-the-top extremism. Even though I can pick up orchids off the ground in my back yard (or grab some on a run before they are picked up to be mulched), it’s illegal for me to send these to people who would make sure that the orchids survive. CITES. Anyway, back to running stuff-Good high tempo run home!

Yes, I never expected the loser to crawl in at over 6 hours. I can walk a marathon faster than that with NO training. My grandma came in in under 6 hours, even though she busted a wheel on her walker at mile 16.
Response:

Despite Kevin’s admittedly lame preparation for a marathon, I think he deserves credit for his stand-up attitude in returning here to report on his experience, and for learning and listing 4 quality lessons learned that may be useful to other new distance runners (can’t count the obvious Metallica conclusion). Kevin, if you do, in fact, train hard this summer and apply your lessons learned, and if you go ahead with the September marathon, you’ve got a good chance of making dramatic improvement. Just remember that the TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN lesson is exponentially more significant than the other ones. Take care during your recovery. chris – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well, I did it… Despite Bill "the Jackass" Rodgers rude and totally expected comment, I finished. But hey, the most valuable things in lofe are learned by mistakes so I am pretty sure I’ll be more prepared come September (Fox Cities Marathon). As far as my splits.
and at least as important, RECOVER, RECOVER, RECOVER. Remember – even the elites can’t train unless they recover. Lyndon summarized it in the junk miles vs speedwork thread: optimal improvement comes from stressing the system then resting them. Or push, then backoff. Google through some of the training threads here or find some training background on the web. RECOVER from this event first, but remember that Fox City is only about 4 months away and many marathon training schedules are at least that long. And you’ll get the food and fluids issues figured out for yourself while you’re doing your long runs – your experiment of one. The function of long runs is time on legs as well as figuring out what for you for fluid, food, and clothing. And good luck.
My whole music collection. Run with an Ipod so can hold about 200 cds on it. Everything from Metalica, AC/DC and Judas Priest to Tim McGraw, Toby Keith and Trick Pony.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Greetings all. For those of you who listen to music while you run, I’d be interested to hear what’s on your MP3 player. I’m pretty much a beginner as a runner, and I like music that keeps me slogging along for my 3-4 miles at 12/min mile. Two quick notes: (1) If you believe that it’s somehow sacrilegous to run with music (as opposed to the lovely sounds of the chirpy frogs or squirrels or birds or whatever), feel free to express your opinion, but I’m really looking for actual song suggestions by other "music fiend" runners. Those two cranky asides aside, here’s my current working list. Feel free to scoff, tweak, add on, or suggest alternatives: Disease by Matchbox Twenty. Goood beat. Smooth, by Rob Thomas with Santana, would also be a good analog. They have virtually the same groove. Body Movin’, by the Beastie Boys, from Hello Nasty. Peppy and cute, and the steel drums are sorta fun. It’s All About the Pentiums, by Weird Al Yankovic. I swear. This is actually a parody of a Puffy Combs song that I’m not familiar with, but the parody actually has a great rocking guitar riff. And, as a technologist, the song is just hilarious. The Way You Liked It, by Adema. I’m not a huge Adema fan, but this song just has a little trippy beat that I love to run to. Gel, by Collective Soul. Fabulous, relentless, fast beat, goood guitar groove. Heavy, by Collective Soul. Same as above, a little slower, very "in the groove". Living Dead Girl, Rob Zombie. You gotta like Zombie, but this is a GREAT running song for me. You never really realize how weird his lyrics are until they’re blasting in your ears as you concentrate on your pace. This is a good "end of run" song for me, keeps me going. More Human Than Human, Rob Zombie. Same thing — weird but a good driving beat. Jukebox Hero, Foreigner. This one is on probation (beat’s a little slow) but so far it’s remained on the Flash card. I skip it about half the time, though. It’s cheesy but can be inspiring in the right frame of mind. Nasty Girl, by Vanity Six. (If you’re a fan of the Beverly Hills Cop movie, this is the song playing in the strip-bar scene). It’s verrrry early-80’s and sort of embarassingly risque, but it’s got a decent beat. Ending is a little slow, though, I often skip after the main verses end. No No No by Robert Frith. A little plug for a local Houston artist whom I really dig. The album Pon Tune is available on Amazon, and it’s an EXCELLENT disc. Several good running songs, actually. Check him out. Insane in the Membrane, by Cypress Hill. Like most of my songs that stay on permanent running rotation (thus far), this one has a CONSTANT beat throughout. Good with heavy bass in the ‘phones, too. Steve McQueen, by Sheryl Crow. I LOVE this one! Good mid-run pacing (for me), great song. She’s very easy to listen to while running. You’re An Original, also by her, same album, is decent, too. Maybe Your Baby, by Stevie Wonder. (This song, by the way, in the top three funkiest songs of all time, ever, on any planet). Its slow pace made me think I wouldn’t like it for running, but I actually love it. It’s just sooooo freakin’ from-another-planet funky.
Went for a long run along the Hudson today. Started out below the George Washington Bridge (which is humongous seen up close!) under a summery sun, beautiful views of woodsy slopes of the Jersey side riverbank, sailboats on the river, the whole thing. Beautiful. After 1.5 miles, an elderly Chinese man, who was visibly excited about something, waved me off the path, pointing at something in the water. "Looka" he said, "looka like animal." There was a little white body being washed up against the stones on the riverbank. I realized it was a dead piglet, ears flapping in the waves, tail uncurled. The other remarkable sighting on this run was the largest flag I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a few impressive ones in the past 9 months) – a helicopter pulled it across the sky. The flag was twice as high as the helicopter was long. That was my Goodbye NYC Run. Adequately off the wall. I will return. nina

Hi Nina, I almost tripped over a red belly snake the other day while running in the bush, scared the **** out of me! I’ve come across some interesting wildlife out running (some dead too unfortunately). So back to Switzerland then? Viel Glueck! Phil

Response:

I guess your going back to Switzerland then. Boring, totally flat and no of Europena travel and Switzerland is the only country we’ve dedicated the bulk of two trips to. We were in Lagano on 9/11. On that one day think all Swiss were American. Just set up your running music with Billy Joel’s "New York State of Mind" and somehow I think you’ll be in NYC on every run.
Yeah I’m taking off tomorrow afternoon.
Response:

The reaction was pretty much like that in the States from what I gather. Of course I wasn’t here (in the USA). But no one could beleive it You probably know though, in traveling, there is always a moment or two that always stands out for what ever the reason. On that trip the moment occured two days later when we arrived in St. Moritz. We got to our hotel and I looked down on the valley and town below. In the center was the grand old hotel and atop the building on two side by side flag staffs where the Swiss and American flags, both at half mast. Pretty moving sight for me anyway. Even took a picture. It’s a great counrty you hail from. But get used to hill running.
MJ That’s a pretty good list. I’ll have to see if I can find those in MP3 format. Some of it is a bit lost on me (I’m in England, so the NFL theme doesn’t mean much) I think you’re the only person who actually gave a list. Perhaps everyone else is a bit shy. Cheers Rob

I did look at the last few hundred postings and didn’t see any reference. I was wondering. What are peoples views on listening to music whilst running? I’ve got a little MP3 player so it’s totally immune to any kind of "rolling" (since it has no moving parts) and would like to listen to something to up my rate slightly. I’m 37 and have been running on and off (well more off than on) for the last 10 years. However, I’ve just started again after a longish interval of what amounts to nearly 2 years. On short runs (2.5 miles) I’m doing about 8:45 per mile and on longer runs (6.5 miles) nearly 10 minutes per mile. I’d like to get down to about 8:30 on the longer runs. So I guess I’m asking 2 questions: 1. Is it good to listen to music whilst running? 2. Any recommendations for something with a simple rhythm (that would encourage an 8:30 minute mile Cheers Rob

Response:

Ed I’m assuming that you are in America. We are definitely two nations separated by a common language. In the UK a "fanny pack" would most definitely mean something else.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I use a Camelback fanny pack that cinches up and doesn’t bounce. very handy Now, for my next question. Cheers Rob (Hope you don’t mind, I changed the subject line) I always take water with me, no matter how short the run. This is probably because, when I started way back long ago, I ran on an indoor track above a heated swimming pool, and I’d get so darn parched. So nowadays it’s mostly habit, but I have noticed that I run *better* if I keep myself hydrated. I take a 0.5 liter Poland Spring bottle with me (refilled from the tap), and that lasts me for 3 miles. When I trained for a 10-miler, I’d refill it at a water fountain at about the halfway mark. During the actual race, I didn’t take a bottle with me, and I regretted it….. still don’t quite have the hang of it, grabbing those little dixie cups and trying to drink from them while running. After my run, I refill the same bottle and make a concious effort to finish it within the next hour or so. Takeaway message: keep hydrated, run better! jen

Dear Anne Well either you’re driving too fast, or they weren’t looking. Wearing headphones needn’t mean taking unnecessary risks or do you have to spend your time picking the teeth of deaf people out of your air intakes as well?
: I’ve been reading the responses to this with interest. I run in the city, : and unless I’m running with the club or doing a very short session, I always : wear a walkman. : : However I very rarely listen to music, instead I listen to talking books. I : find wanting to know what happens next in the book I am "reading" a good : extra motivation for some of the runs! : : I borrow the books from a library – they are rather expensive to buy. It : also means that I listen to quite a diverse range of material – not just the : kinds of things I would normally read. : : Does anyone else do this – or am I alone?! I did it once and it worked pretty good. At audible.com, I was able to get my first book for less than $2. (Downloaded it to my MP3 player). I used it during a long run and it helped during those middle miles where the run seems like it will never end. I was running along a rail trail so there wasn’t any traffic, and it was cold, so I didn’t see any other runners, bikers, or roller bladers. (The trail gets crowed during nice weather).

I use a water carrier, on runs longer than an hour, filled with watered down sport drink. I thought I’d have to make a comfort stop, but I didn’t. Staying hydrated and comfortable keeps me running longer, and it gives me a nice way of having a walking break: quick slurp, couple of deep breaths, and away again. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Now, for my next question.
Response:

The only time I listen to music while running is on a treadmill. As the pace is steady and the scenery doesn’t change – why not? I tried listening to music on the road, but found that I’d keep slowing down, or losing concentration. I’ve even tried books on tape but they are worse. Now, I just concentrate on my breathing, the traffic, my stride length, looking for places to take walk breaks… Interesting that you wanted to listen to music during a race. I’m running my first marathon in April and I didn’t even think of headphones. I want to make sure I can hear the spectators who’ve made the effort to come out and cheer on us slow plodders at the back. Hello there, 1. Is it good to listen to music whilst running? It is for me – it isn’t for some other people. I can’t do without it, though, if I’m running on my own. I think you should listen to music if it helps you get round/enhances the experience. Just be careful, of course, not to block out all sound, as that’s always dangerous.

<snip

Response:

Dear all I’m amazed by the amount of responses that my message has generated. Far more than I’ve ever got anywhere else. It’s great. In answer to the various comments I would say that: 1. My short run (2.3 miles) is done at night in the dark. However, it’s all on pavements (sidewalks) and not very busy (I live in a rural town in England) However, last night I did it without music and was slightly quicker. 2. My longer run (6.3 miles) is out on country roads and whilst there is no pavement I only do this loop in the day (usu Sunday) and to be honest I usually can see the car before I hear it, so music isn’t a problem. 3. I realise that in order to improve I probably need to radically improve my technique and use tools like Fartlek. The only problem is I HATE IT. It seems so much easier to just get out there an run, but I will try harder in future. 4. I don’t think there’s any way I could listen to a talking book. I do this all the time in the car, but I find running somehow more distracting. I once tried doing my times table and found it very hard work. 5. I’ll definitely be steering clear of Barry Manilow. Whether running or not 6. I’m rather disappointed to find that even my target speed is considerably slower than George W Bush, and he’s gotta be older than me (I’m 37) Now, for my next question. What are peoples views on taking water on a training run? I don’t on the short runs, but on the 6.3 miler I take a little container that slips over the hand and holds perhaps 1/2 cupful.
My last 7 years of work included a 45 minute drive each way. I also listened to many, many books both fiction and non-fiction. It was a delightful way to pass the time during my drive and keep up with "reading." OTOH, I listen to nothing while running. I love the natural sounds of the environment even those rednecks in pick up trucks expressing enthusiasm for a man wearing tights plus I feel much safer. It does mean that I can still hear the traffic etc pretty well, although I suspect I would be slightly safer without the headphones.

I’ve done much more backpacking than running, and I’ve found that quite a lot of backpackers seem to get very worked up at the idea of other people listening to music while walking. Apparently it can apply in running too. I posted in another thread that I did my first cross-country run today. I was worried that I’d find the going even tougher than it needed to be without my MP3 player, so I was planning to wear it. However, the bunch of people I’d gone along with persuaded me not to. When I asked why, there didn’t seem to be any good reason. The bottom line was that it was considered "anti-social". Bearing in mind that this was a race, and that no-one was talking or running together, that made no sense to me. Still, out of courtesy for their greater experience of doing these runs I left it behind, but the run was so exhausting that I’ll be taking it next time unless someone can give me a good reason not to. Each to their own, it seems to me Best wishes, — Shirl

This is about 8:00/mile pace, which will help make those 8:30/miles feel slower. If you find this session easy, decrease the recovery time to 200m (2:00). b) ‘fartlek’ run once or twice a week. This means that on these runs you speed up and slow down at any time, for however long you want. These runs are completely unstructured. The only rule is that you have to vary your pace. For instance, on your next shorter run (2.5 miles), try speeding up to 8:30/mile of faster for a few blocks, or a few minutes… you get the idea. These runs are great because they allow you to tailor your aggressiveness depending on how you feel right there and then. I like doing hilly fartleks where I attack the uphills and recover on the downs. c) increase your mileage. do this slowly but surely. I recommend about 3 – 5 miles a week at most, for 3 weeks at time – then an easy week for recovery. Then the cycle starts again. — David (in Hamilton, Ont) "Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible." Shakespeare, Julius Caesar http://www.angelfire.com/nc/swstudio/home.html –

You’ll be the judge of that – other persons personal preferences can’t really guide you. I for example rather listen to sounds created by nature, but someone else might want to block out traffic and city noises with AC/DC. It all depends. 2.
I can’t even count my cadence while running, yet, so listening to music is beyond me. As a side note, I wore shoes that still had junlge bells on them from the last event. I kinda like the sound. However, one neighborhood dog who never payed me any attention took exception to them. To keep peace in the ‘hood, I’ll go sans bells next time.
I must be very lucky to live and run in a veritable bucolic wonderland. I love my music and have made a hundred CD’s this year alone but I could never run with my tunes and mask any external stimuli. My running music is my Saturday group run talking about what is important to them in life. Like listening to new father of twins describing balancing both children in his lap so mom can get some rest from the rigors of breast feeding. The discussion then dovetails to how those first children affected others. A run and shared experiences – what better music. Even when totally alone I want to hear the squirrel rustle through the leaves, the ducks honk and fly in an unbalanced Vee and equally important, watch for dogs and cars. Of course Five For Fighting’s "America town" fills the house while I read and type. Probably the reason my posts often have major grammar holes – I can’t type and listen at the same time. — Caveat Lector "the further you go outside, the further you go inside" – B.
Yeah, that’s great album and particularly since it was his first solo one (as far as I know). Several of my recent runs have had him along for the trip – no music (I’m not that advanced, yet), just George. Tell Me and While My Guitar have gotten stuck in the cobwebs from time to time (at least it wasn’t Petticoat Junction <G).
I can’t even count my cadence while running, yet, so listening to music is beyond me. As a side note, I wore shoes that still had junlge bells on them from the last event.
Probably the reason my posts often have major grammar holes – I can’t type and listen at the same time. — Caveat Lector "the further you go outside, the further you go inside" – B.
because of what it does for your joints and feetsies. not to mention the expanded ego driving your frontal lobes into the reptilian brainstem… the confusion of thought and motion being so extreme that merely running in a straight line makes one think one is both morally and intellectually superior… superior, of course, to the people who spend time "thinking about too much stuff". how about you? how did you arrive at this conclusion? mike

Response:

Dos Babe, I’ve run with music for 20 years. It is wonderful. Some runs I remember for years afterward simply because of the music I ran with. I particularly remember a 15 mile run in Shanghai in 1987 and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony was on the radio for the last 7 miles. Beethoven was at first banned during the Cultural Revolution, but the ban on the 9th Symphony was kept in force for a few extra years because of the words in the 4th movement, "All men are brothers". So hearing this symphony while running in China brought tears to my eyes. Passerbys must have wondered at the site of a foreigner running through the streets sobbing, tears running down his cheeks, but a smile on his face! I like to do work outs to good rock stations. A particular work-out (somewhat like a fartleq–Norwegian for "speedplay") is to keep to the pace of the beat for every other song. This means a good push always at slightly different paces and for unknown duration. It builds good running style and stamina. During races (and I never adhere to the rules banning radios at races) I sometimes like to take particularly soothing music. Handle’s Water Music got me through the middle of one of my 8 Boston Marathons. It is so smooth and even that it helped me keep a smooth pace and not get too wound up running the many downhills that Boston is famous for. Good luck. And don’t listin to these people who say no music with running. If you find it motivating–then it can’t be bad. jd

Response:

I usually enjoy running with music that has an upbeat tempo. If the music is too plodding, like many ballads, then I begin to have a tough time keeping up a good pace. Of course, this is all according to your personal tastes. Mine vary from day to day, so I am changing the music all the time. If you have a PC ( or Mac ) with CD ripping and burning software, you might want to compile a CD or two of your favorites. This will make your runs much more enjoyable. If you are going on a long run make sure you take extra batteries in case the player dies before you get back! The whole idea is – - – have fun!

. Hi, Would anyone have any suggestions for music to run to, CD or cassette? Thank you for any suggestions Take Care! Dos Babe

Dos Babe

i have to admit that i do head music… and the music i start with is spontanious whatever and seems to match my momentary running ability. at some point of warmup the music will switch, usually from a 2/4 to an 8/8 — the Beethoven 9th that was mentioned in another post? the allegro shows up alot in my runs. after about midpoint of a 10 mile plus, i’ll consciously go into an 8 count of one stride per beat at a non-music steady pace. this minds me back onto the rail, and i maintain whatever speed i’ve reached. this is why i don’t listen to any external music when i run: it’s undynamic to the run. i don’t do "scenery" either — the run is from point to point. mike

snip << During races (and I never adhere to the rules banning radios at races) I sometimes like to take particularly soothing music. snip << If you find it motivating–then it can’t be bad. Everyone’s entitled to his or her opinion. I’m curious to know if it would matter to you if listening to music on headphones during a race kept a runner from hearing another runner trying to pass and caused the music lover to interfere with a runner’s progress–maybe some music listeners are just so danged fast that no one ever passes them <grin? Any other race rules that runners should opt out of because they interfere with motivation? Nothing personal, just want to understand how you worked it out that this is the right decision regarding music during RACES, as opposed to training–the latter seems like a reasonable choice, as I said before, just not the one I choose.
I like Jump for Your Love. I have a 12 minute disco version. I even have an Irish Waltz that seems to work very well. On long runs I like to relax an it feels slow, but it is really rather fast. — Dia ’s Muire duit Joseph E. Meehan

I prefer hilly trail running. As I have to concentrate to my running music won’t be no good. The only runs where I could imagine to listen to music are very long street runs like in marathon training. In that case I’d probably listen to (if any music at all) relaxed music (like meditation music) because running long runs is a bit like meditation to me. Tobias

You the man Tobias. I do the vast amount of my running on hilly trails and to run with a radio is almost a sin. The natural sights and sounds are indescribable. We also have normally docile black bears right until you get between mom and the cub while you are listening to Dave Matthew’s "The Space Between." The only runs where I could imagine to listen to music are very long street runs like in marathon training.

There is always the safety factor whether on informal longs runs on roads or marathons. Most races to cover their bums i.e. their race insurance, will say no radios on the entry form. Whether they enforce it our not is another issue. But if you get run over the ambulance coming to save a fellow runner, you’ll literally, figuratively, an legally not have a leg to stand on. because running long runs is a bit like meditation to me.

Why is there always talkback radio on in the morning? I find when I’m 3/4 up a bloody long hill I’m just not very motivated by experts on dental hygiene discussing the A-Z of sex (Today: Mouths!), I’m learning a lot though. They had bands every couple of k in a half marathon earlier in the year. Anyone remember that Spice Girls "stop right now" song? Not helpful. Give me Bulls on Parade any day.

The reason I reject the no-earphone rule in races is that I don’t believe that running with earphones is dangerous. I never have the music on so loud that I can’t hear things around me. When they outlaw radios in cars I’ll consider not wearing earphones when I run. jd

Actually I read a study somewhere where they showed statistically significant improvements in performance WITH music – the reason they gave was that concentrating on the music distracts you from the effort you’re putting in. Another gadget is an MP3 player – as small as a radio but you get to choose your own music.

your breathing and heartbeat? or a mental music which varies to match the incline? how about just watching an MTV video at home? running and jogging isn’t very healthy for you. better to take long hikes… the hills are alive with the sound of what’s-it…

Response:

Three thoughts about music while running: 1) if you are training to run in organized races (10k, 5k, marathons, others), maybe you should consider not listening to music while you train, because headphone are banned from just about all of those events, as you probably know anyway. You’ll just get used to the music during workouts as a distraction from exertion, boredom, etc. and then when you are in the event you’ll be sunk by the silence. Instead, learn to use the running time to work through problems mentally, observe the scenery, or keep track of your body’s response to the workout, your breathing, etc. but I’m not trying to preach about this, so: 2) if you are just running to be healthy (a great idea, too) or just HAVE to listen to music either way, I would avoid the kind of up-tempo, strong-beat music used in aerobics or spinning (cycling) classes, because I think you could easily overstride or run too fast in response. I would select music with longer songs than radio-format pop music, so this argues for something like classical or jazz performances that go on for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. 3) another way to go would be visiting a local audiobooks rental store and trying out the idea of listening to books on tape while running. This strikes me as being closer to option 1 than music, and something you would be less reliant on when running in events. Good luck.
