When to rebuild engine
Question:
I have a 90 GT w/ 130,000 city driven miles on it. It lags noticeably even after extensive tune up. Is it time to get the 5.0 rebuilt? What do you say

What : do you say First you should do compression tests on all the cylinders to check to see if they are within spec. If the compression is good and your exhaust is clean you don’t really have to rebuild it. —

If it has plenty of power and is not smoking or burning lots of oil I guess it is OK. You might rebuild/modify the entire running gear if you want to make the car a whole lot faster. Bill Kiene Kiene’s Fly Shop Sacramento,CA,USA 800/4000FLY

A compression test is a good idea, but the results could be meaningless if the readings are poor or inconsistent amongst all cylinders. What I’m getting at is if the rings are still performing their function but the valves are no longer sealing properly you will get poor/inconsistent results from a compression test. Preferably, a leak-down test will accurately point out if the problem is rings or valves…if there is a problem at all. With your city driving, you are more likely to have alot of deposits within the cylinder, particularly the heads. Having your heads worked is a hell of lot cheaper and quick to perform than a full blown engine rebuild, which of course should include reworking the heads. In any case, good luck. -D : I have a 90 GT w/ 130,000 city driven miles on it. It lags noticeably : even after extensive tune up. Is it time to get the 5.0 rebuilt?
