Running while traveling

Categories: running gear

Question:

I’m training for my fourth MCM but during September will spend a week and a half in England/France. Though I’ll keep up with my training my wife objects to the smelly condition of my running gear. Anyone have suggestions on what works best to rinse out shirts and shorts in the sink, for example. Also any other tips for running while on the road would be appreciated.

I travel a lot and find myself in the same sitation frequently.  The thing that works best for me is to throw my clothes in the shower with me and put the stopper in the drain.  Then pour the left over shampoo from the little bottles supplied by the hotel onto the clothes.  As I clean up myself I keep stepping on the clothes and stirring up the soapy water.  After I’m done I rinse them out under the shower, wring them out as best I can, and hang them up on the shower curtain bar. The key is in letting the clothes get completely dry.  This usually means that I have to take 2 sets with me and alternate them.  This way each one have plenty of time to dry out.  After a week of two of this I will break get them laundered which when combined with the aforementioned routine will get me through for another week or two. The hardest part is if you are moving to different hotels all the time and have to keep wet clothes packed up in your bags.  This is when I start having problems with odor. Jeff Crume

The biggest suggestion I can make about running while traveling, you have already done.  Use the net!!  What I have done, prior to a trip is post to the net stating my destination, and asking for advice.  I always arrive with routes in hand.  Recently I ran the lakeshore in Chicago and St. Charles in New Orleans, thanks to this community.

Small boxes of laundry detergent work in sinks as well as in the washer.   However, based on my business travels, I have found it wise to take a bag that has an isolated plastic section of some sort so as to keep the offending clothes separte from the rest. jg
