RUNNING IN THE COLD
Question:
I’m not a runner, and am wondering if it’s healthy to run when it’s 0 or below? I see people do this, and have to wonder if it’s hard on the body.
Response:

Generally I don’t think it’s a problem, as long as you are dressed correctly for the cold weather. In Calgary, Aberta, Canada on 11-Jan-98 it was -32 C and we were out running in that. –Ted. — On the web as <A HREF="http://www.beer.org/~tpark/" Ted’s Home Page </A

Not really. Below -15 to -20C you will start to need some gear to warm the air you breathe, otherwise your throat might get a quite rough time. -Kim

if you’re used to it, then no problem. just don’t try it with lungs that aren’t used to that chill. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – : I’m not a runner, and am wondering if it’s healthy to run when it’s 0 or : below? No problem running in the cold to about -25 Centigrade, but start off into the wind, so you are returning under warmer conditions. Remember in running gear you can be quickly in trouble with hypothermia if something goes wrong, so plan a route that circles your house so you are never too far from warmth. Layer up, ski masks save frostbite, and for ice put short hexagonal self tapping screws into the soles of an old pair of runners.

I don’t think it’s unhealthy to run in those temps, I don’t think it’s hard on the body, and I haven’t yet run in temps where I needed something to "warm" the air I’m breathing. Anchorage is not a brutally cold city, so I rarely see temps below -25C, but runners in Fairbanks typically run in temps of -40 or below. I read of a study recently done on XC ski racers, where there was evidence that racing in very cold temps seemed to lead to asthmatic symptoms in some people. However, I am an asmathic ultrarunner, and I have no breathing problems at all in the coldest temps we see here. However, motivation can easily become an issue when it’s cold, dark, and you’ve got a long solo run staring you in the face. Damon

I think it comes down to how "expanded" your lungs are. If you have been running for some time and are in good shape you can go to much lower temperatures. I moved to Ottawa Canada from Hawaii nearly two years ago. At first I though -15C would be it for me. I continued to try lower and lower thresholds however, and now I will even go out in -30C, provided there is little wind. Hawaii is great for warm temps, but you can’t run during mid-day. I would do my running either before the sun came up or in the evenings as the sun set. Here in Canada I have more flexibility. Strange when you think about it, and actually contrary to intuition. There is a limit to the number of layers you can remove, but no limit to the layers you can put on.
