Options for a dead Samurai?

Categories: running gear

Question:

You might want to check out Ketlec Industires.  They have a kit to convert a Samauri to a VW diesel.  It gets around 40 mpg and has lots more torque.  I would do that in a heart beat.  Good Luck Kevin W. http://www.keltec.com/ksi_other.html

Response:

If you are considering an engine swap in europe the Samurai is now beeing sold with a 1.9 TD (not Intercooled) engine I think this is the same engine that fits the Vitara (sidekick) I own this engine is a Pegeout XUD 1.9 more info can be obtained from Suzuki. Luis Gaspar

Allegedly, the engines are very good except for the oil control rings.  When these go, the engines drink a lot of oil.  Some folks do rebuild the engine, others prefer to install a 1.6L from the tracker/geo line of vehicles, preferably one with fuel injection.  I recommend contacting Petroworks for advice – www.petroworks.com – Rob – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I puchased an 87′ Samurai JX hardtop from a private party.  He pulled the wool over my eyes though, and sold me a rig that drinks oil like it was cheap beer.  I am now stuck with a vehicle that has a good drivetrain and running gear,  an excellent body, is clean inside and out but has a toasted engine (its probably the rings, i.e. blue smoke from the tail pipe and buildups on the spark plugs.)  I have already decided to keep the truck until such time when I can resurerect it.  So maybe someone ot there can tell me where that leaves me.  What would the possablity of finding a good used motor be?  Is a used motor cheaper than a rebuild?  How about a sidekick engine swap?  etc. Any info that anyone has regarding this situation would be greatly appreceated. –Eric Maschwitz

No question at all, do the sidekick engine swap.  I swapped one into my sammy two years ago, and it’s a perfect match.  25-30 mpg, 85 mph top speed (not actually a _good_ thing in a samurai, but still…), actually being able to tow things, the list goes on and on. Summit Off-Road offers a kit, as do Calmini and a few other places. www.summitoffroad.com www.calmini.com check out www.off-road.com/4×4web/suzuki/samurai/engineswap.htm for lot’s of vital info. Summit also has some info on the VW turbodiesel swap (drooldrooldrool) but that might be more of a hassle than you’re looking for. PLD

A VW turbo diesel would make a neat swap…. 4 wheel drive van page: http://www.glinx.com/users/sbest Tire chains, camping gear, tools,82 Bronco and some shooting stuff too.

Response:

The sierra (samuri) motor should not be expensive to rebuild and is a strong good reving motor (8000 rpm stock, no worries, my mates recommend a towing cam for more bottom end power & torque), and the vitara (sidekick) motor I heard does fit if you dent back part of tke firewall half an inch for the dizzy (don’t get the twin cam it has more power and less torque). Because you have a separate transfer case any 4cyl and matching gearbox may be fitted (as long as the gear leaver lines up) by making some engine and gearbox mounts (you may have to upgrade your radiator if you go too big). Toyota corolla 1500 and 1600 are popular here, I’ve even heard of rotary and V6/V8 (not recommended). — Pat Keeper of the Mangeysaurus http://powerup.com.au/~mangey (SPAM will be copied 5 times and returned to sender (slowly, blunt end first))
