Barna-Clean system – does it work?
Question:
Has anybody out there tried that Barna-Clean system that claims to keep barnacles off by using sound waves emitted from hull-mounted transducers? From what I understand, the sound waves are supposed to create a thin layer of rapidly moving water next to the hull. The moving water is supposed to keep the critters from attaching. What were your results? Any problems with it? Does it keep everything (algae, weeds) from attaching? Would you use it again? Thanks, Jim
Response:
Barnaclean does work …or at least the technology does. The Barnaclean system is woefully underpowered and will work best on very thin hulls. No effect on slime and algae. Also, it is 20 year old technology and uses lamp cord for wiring. Got to use a lot of transducers. and the bases are flimsy plastic. Check out the state of the art technology (Hullsonic) at (http:/oet.net) this is engineered to marine standards, has 20 times the power, and state of the art acoustics. Or call the company (Ocean Environmental Technologies) at 1-800-637-5766 It ain’t cheap …. but it is guaranteed and could solve your problem for many years. Can do running gear and hulls on boats up to 120 feet. No good on sailboat keels, wood hulls, cored hulls….. but can do most anything else. Contact me direct for more information. I am the Regional Sales Manager for Hullsonic on the Gulf Coast Chris Dewey The whole idea is that the 28Hz sound waves move a "packet" of water of the same size as the barnacle larvae. It’s as if I shook you 2 feet to the left and right 28 times a second.
