4000 Quatrro upgrade

Categories: running gear

Question:

While the CIS-E fuel injection on the ‘87 is electronic, the car doesn’t have a "modern" computer engine managment system like the later Motronic cars. As I said, stone cold idle is low. I have to blip the engine a little after startup with the local temperatures at about 20 degrees F. After a minute the engine idles, but way low. If the tach is right, I’m idling steadily at 300 rpm at that point, but the car doesn’t stall. After maybe two minutes, idle is up around 500. I talked informally to a professional Audi wrench about this issue, and he said there was probably little I could do about it. The low cold idle was less pronounced when the weather was warmer. That’s the only problem I’ve come across so far, other than retorquing the odd bolt here and there. I’ve got about 10K on the engine mods other than the exhaust, which is pretty fresh. Russ

If you swap out the head to an NF (‘88 5000) model, ported, and use a sport cam such as a Schrick  you can possibly gain a 25% horsepower increase, partly at the  expense of low-end torque. I’ve seen claims of as much as 160 hp with a cam and head, but I don’t believe it. I have a ported, flowed NF head, 272 Schrick cam and 2.5-inch Stebro stainless exhaust on my ‘87 4000q and guesstimate power at 140hp, although I’ve never had the car on a dyno. I haven’t lost a lot of low-end grunt with this setup, but it does have some cold idling issues. Beyond that, you’re looking at a turbo engine transplant. My friend CR Krieger has suggested that it’s hard to make a 4000 turbo into a streetable car; I suggest you study  the archives at www.audfans.com if you want to check out the possibilitieis for yourself. I am thinking about upgrading the engine in my 1985 4000s Quattro (2.2 10V). Just wondering if anyone had info to offer on what product type work best. Thinking of changing all or any combo of the following: Cam Throttle body Exhaust Header (if there is one for this car) Struts and springs Chip Thanks, Ed

You can do all of the above its just a question of $. Many are fitting 10V T/C I/C engines alongside brakes and suspension to produce a 4 door Urq or better!  Cost can run to $15K for a full 20V AAN/RR engine plus running gear upgrade.
