WHY always a white race t-shirt?

Categories: running club

Question:

In the bunch of runs that I have done in the past number of years, my drawer is getting filled with white t-shirts! I actually wear my race shirts to go shopping and stuff… How about some variety!

The answer is: White T’s are cheaper than dyed T’s and require less ink when screen printing. Come run the Peachtree City Classic 15K in October.  A great race (used to be the national 15K championship) and you get a good quality color _sweat_ shirt. (No, I am neither the race director, sponsor, or Peachtree City Running Club member.)  Located south of Atlanta on I-85.

I ran a 10K last month here in Norfolk, Va, Harborfest 10K, and they gave you a choice of either red, blue or green. What a first !! I got one white tank top earlier in the year but alas the rest are all white…..                             Mike Nelson

Race directors! Race coordinators! The usual race t-shirt is usually white or the occasional gray. HOW ABOUT SOME COLORS?!!! HOW ‘BOUT SOME SINGLETS!!. I think it’s a conspiracy. Seriously, I’d like a Coolmax singlet I could actually wear running.   Tom C.

As a race director of two area races (Run for the Bus 5K and Race with Grace 10K), I can answer that … bucks! White T’s are the cheapest and gray follows next in line. In the interest of holding down costs, unless you have a major sponsor on board, white’s the way to go. Both my races, however, have gone with long sleeved T’s.

Yeah, it started to happen around 1990. All the colors went away. I’ll bet the last shirt-of-color I have is from 1989 and I run about a dozen races a year, so I have 3 dresser drawers full of white tees. Through the 70’s and 80’s it was unusual to ever get white. But I think the trend is beginning to swing back toward the colors again. I’ve been to 2 races in the past year which had blue and green shirts and people raved about it. (Unfortunately they were out of my size, so my daughter ended up with a nice blue shirt instead of me.) Race directors will get the message when they get some feedback that we like colors better. My friend these thing come in phases…I remember a time when I said to myself, "Not another yellow running shirt!"….I believe that was 1983. Colors change and I slow down as the years go by…but I am still getting those stupid running T-Shirts because I’m still running…That is something to be happy about!                                     MP                                    I run where I can.                                    When I can.                                    Simply because I can.
