two steps forward, one step back!

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well folks, I’ve had a *come to Jesus* meeting with myself, and I’ve decided to bag the Richmond Marathon (too many body dings) and do a 1/2 marathon in 6 weeks, and also one or two 10K’s in October and November, and then begin training for the Shamrock Marathon next March.  I think I overestimated my initial fitness level, and my body’s ability to take the mileage increase (even with a Galloway training schedule). I’m also getting a refund for my Galloway training fee–the program is simply not working for me (at least the program that I’m enrolled in, anyway).  I’m probably going to go back to using the Higdon *Novice Marathon* program once I start the marathon training again in mid-November. I started with that in mid-March when I started getting back in decent shape, and I think that training schedule works better for me.  My goal is to do my marathon in 5:15 to 5:30–and I think that’s realistic for next March, but *not* for Richmond in 3 months! I will also continue to do the Wednesday evening track workouts at a local high school that I’ve been doing since early July.  I’ve been getting real results with them (faster)–and I’m more aware of my *pace* than previously. Plus, the guy who runs the workout is very knowledgeable, and I trust his judgment/coaching, and the people who do the workout are very accepting/supportive of someone like me who is *slow, but getting better*! Great moves, Jean.  Especially the Wednesday evening part.  Having a coach look you over periodically is one of the best things you can do for yourself.  Even world class runners need them!  It’s also great and fun to have a group of runners to work out with. I’m interested in the Galloway training regime you were into.  Did you get face-to-face coaching from them?  What was the fee?

Response:

It took me many years to build up to the fitness level that I am at now.  I will run two marathons this year.  It is the first time I have done that.  I will have run four marathons total which 5 years ago would be unthinkable.  Furthermore, 15 years ago I was smoking and drinking all the time.  I have changed a lot over the years. I run in a local running club.  Running with a group of people once or twice a week, especially on the long runs helps a lot and is fun. Strength training can help you increase your fitness level.  It takes some time to build up strength.  It generally takes about 3 months to see results, but in the end it is worth it.  For myself it helps me run farther with less effort, run faster, and remain injury free. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well folks, I’ve had a *come to Jesus* meeting with myself, and I’ve decided to bag the Richmond Marathon (too many body dings) and do a 1/2 marathon in 6 weeks, and also one or two 10K’s in October and November, and then begin training for the Shamrock Marathon next March.  I think I overestimated my initial fitness level, and my body’s ability to take the mileage increase (even with a Galloway training schedule). Before you buy.

Increased self awareness and self knowledge isn’t a step back but a step forward in a different direction. -S- – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well folks, I’ve had a *come to Jesus* meeting with myself, and I’ve decided to bag the Richmond Marathon (too many body dings) and do a 1/2 marathon in 6 weeks, and also one or two 10K’s in October and November, and then begin training for the Shamrock Marathon next March.  I think I overestimated my initial fitness level, and my body’s ability to take the mileage increase (even with a Galloway training schedule).
