Head Cold today – Marathon Sunday Advice pls

Categories: running club

Question:

The Omaha Running Club is planning a new marathon this fall. No Streets! All run around lakes and paved trails. It will be the first time the Running Club has done a marathon in nearly 10 years, the previous (and discontinued) marathon was not a club event. Be looking for apps and info at the club web

And on the subject of Marathon advice: I’m planning on running CVS Cleveland on Sunday — in the (forecast) possible showers — and need advice: I woke up yesterday morning with one of those head colds — sinus headache, stuffy, a little sneezing.  I’m using decongestants — I like Nyquil and Dayquil and Sudafed — and I want some advice on Sunday’s marathon. Should I or shouldn’t I?   This will be / was to have been my first marathon.  Dropping out will be a disappointment, but if it is really the right answer I guess I could do so (and run the 10k maybe?)… Your collective wisdom is appreciated. Sam.

Sam, Lot’s of questions about running/racing sick recently. I am not a doctor. However, I will say that the decesion to run/race is and individual one and should be based on how YOU feel and what YOUR goals are.The other people that have been posting about being sick and running a marathon still had a week or more until there race when there symptoms were peaking. For them the forced rest was probably the best thing that could happen to them. However, in your case you are right on the edge – sick Friday, race Sunday. If you can I would postpone the deceisn until late Satrurday or even see how you feel when you get up on Sunday morning. The decongestants will allow you to get two good nights sleep. Pump the liquids(water, juice etc . .) put your feet up and relax. You have nothing to loose. If you do decide to do the race I would be leary of a man approaching you afterwards wearing a white lab coat. Ephedrine, the active ingredient of most decongestants is on the IOC banned list of Drugs. Good Luck Steve Fleck
