To get people out of the 5/10K rut our running club hosts a Grand Prix series of races that start at 1 mile, 4 mile 5 mile, 15k, 20k,10 miles and up to and including a 1/2 marathon. In order to score points and get the brass ring you need to do both sprints and endure. Obviously constructed to minimize any biasness. This forced sharing has opened a few eyes.

Our annual team comp includes 4 and 5 mile races, as well as some half marathons and the marathon. I wish they’d include the mile, but they don’t. We have more of a 4/5 mile rut here (though there are also several decent half marathons during the year too), because those are the distances that best suit the geography of central park.
It’s an interesting distance to race at. I bet the organizers wanted *something* to set it apart from the plethora of other runs in the area (last weekend, for instance, there were 10 5Ks on Saturday and a few other races on Sunday). << I don’t know why one of these races that are scheduled for the same day as a jillion other races doesn’t try altering the distance slightly – say a four-miler or a five-miler – to separate themselves from the crowd. Mike —

I think 8K, 5 milers and 10 milers are excellent distances as is the 15K (a person favorite of mine). << I like 10 milers and 15Ks, too, but I can understand why these are less common as they’re not going to appeal to the numbers that the shorter distances will. Four- and five-milers wouldn’t be as intimidating so the race will still attract some casual runners as well as race-addicted people who were tired of weekly 5Ks.
(Top-posting corrected) I’m not saying it makes a whole lot of sense. I’m just showing you where they got the idea: they changed "miles" to "km" and called it metric. Everyone was shouting about how they couldn’t see where they came up with the distance, and that’s how they did it. –Harold Buck "I used to rock and roll all night, and party every day. Then it was every other day. . . ." -Homer J. What is a "Metric Half-Marathon"? Thanks for explaining! Since a marathon is 26.2 miles, a half-marathon is 13.1 miles (obviously). Instead of saying miles, however, they substitute KM, but (conveniently for us newbies), don’t convert the distance. So, it becomes 13.1 KM, or, roughly, 8.1 miles. I’m sure there is an easier explanation, but that’s all I’ve got. This is not directed at you, but I cannot resist. I am a little bit irked by how some race officials use the term "metric" to perform shenanigans and promote innumeracy, and denigrate the metric system by association. A metric marathon is 42,195 meters. Same as 26.2 miles. A metric half marathon is 21,097 meters, same as 13.1 miles. 13,200 meters is not "metric half marathon". What you are describing sounds more properly as "1/3 marathon". — Running Log: http://igor.chudov.com/weightloss/exercise.txt

Leafing through rec.running, I read Ignoramus6961’s message of 25 Oct 2004: 8.1 miles is not a very long distance…

It depends on how you cover it. At an easy pace, it’s not very long. However, covering it as fast as you can will make it seem painfully long. Ever run a mile as fast as you can?
I have been running consistently for about 2 months and did a six mile run this morning with no problems (though my shins are a bit sore right now). During the week I try to run 2-3 times, usually a 2-3 miler each time. In about 4 weeks (Nov. 20) there is a metric half-marathon in my town that I would like to run, which equates to about 8.1 miles. Is this a reasonable to goal if I increase my distance by a half-mile or so for each run runing the week up to the week of the race?

Sure. I started running in late June or early July and did a half-marathon in early October. I completed the half-marathon in just under 2 hours, and managed without any walking. It actually felt pretty easy. My longest run before the half-marathon was 14K, i.e. two-thirds of the distance, which I did about 1.5 weeks before race day. It was mainly for psychological reasons, since I figured if I could do two-thirds of the distance, I’d manage with the remaning third one way or another on race day. Apart from the 14K run the week before, I did 4 or 5 10K runs in the preceding weeks, otherwise only shorter distances of 3-7 K, about 3-4 times per week. Since you’ve just done a 6 mile run without problems, I reckon you are pretty much prepared for the 8.1 miles already, so I’m not sure you relly need to increase your training dose. Just keeping your current level up for the next 3-4 weeks should be sufficient (if all you want to do is to complete the race). Bjorn

Sure, I’d do it. Sounds like a bold plan for a complete beginner and I would be careful; having a plan of simply finishing on my feet without injury and being happy for the experience. Don’t change your running plan much now. At your level, simply getting out there on a regular basis is making you improve at a relatively fast pace. Your half-mile increase plan sounds okay. The shin pain is common among new runners – avoid hills and rub them with a rolling pin at night. Let us know how it went! I love reading about first races. Don’t get caught up in the excitement and go out at too fast a pace.
<< Yep, that’s it. Sorry, I didn’t know that a "Metric Half-Marathon" was not a common race.

I run about 6 miles a day for 6 days a week and sometime 3 miles on my "bad" days. I’m running a half-marathon this coming saturday. I think it’s about knowing what you "can" do. If you feel your ready, then yea. No magical equations here. But don’t hurt yourself by trying to set a PR or go at it the wrong way. Just relaz and have a good time.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have been running consistently for about 2 months and did a six mile run this morning with no problems (though my shins are a bit sore right now). Thanks.

I can tell my wife >>> does not like that I am upstairs exercising this long. She has made >>> comments I dont get anything doen during the week. (Like projects on >>> the house). I usually exercise Sunday -Thursday. I do it mainly for >>> health reasons and my appearance. >>> Am I going overboard? >> I never know if you’re for real or not, but if I take you at >> face value then I say enjoy your exercising. Don’t make >> her problem yours. >> What is it with her telling you you are slow anyway? >> What’s her rush? >> – Michaela > Why do you think I am not real?

Because you don’t seem to listen to what people are telling you? Perhaps you are just messing with us? > She wants alot of thing doen around the house and when I do something > I am slow. She does not always tell me but I can sense it.

Stop worrying about what she thinks so much! "I will not define myself in terms of you" – Bernd You are creating your own misery. Do you enjoy doing these jobs or not? I think you do and you feel proud (note to self) of what you’ve done. Here’s my wild guesses. They are not meant to offend. Because you are so thorough with the quality of your work, she can’t pick on you in that regard. But she has picked up on some insecurity of yours. It probably has something to do with being slow. And when she’s feeling irritable/needs a scapegoat she’ll [probably unconsciously] continually pick on that aspect of you until one day she’s [with your tacit permission of course] created such a huge rift in your "psyche" wrt how you see yourself in her eyes that she can’t stand to set eyes on you anymore. I’m surprised she hasn’t started in on your desire to save money. Perhaps she just hasn’t thought of it yet or she herself has a (note to self: rship with money) thing about money. > I guess part of the problem is I like to do everything myself and hate > to have "outside" people come in. Why spend good money when I am > capable. (Even if I am slow). My wife refused to let me paint the > living room kitchen because it is a large area and would have taken me > a long time. SO she called someone form the outside and it costs us > 339 bucks. I did paint the baby’s room though. As a matter of fact, it > looks better than the guy who painted the living room. That is part of > why I am slow.

You simply *have* to stop her in her tracks with a well-timed remark. Only you will know when that moment has come and what the right thing to say will be. You have to be truly ready for it when you do it. It’s one moment you can’t fake. Choose your moment and words carefully, time it perfectly. You will literally *feel* the shift between your wife and yourself. Even if it’s only because you believe it happened, you will still feel it. It’s in the belief itself that you change things. Some would call it manipulation, but I hold that almost nothing is wholly good or bad. There’s a right time for everything. And sometimes it’s a good thing to use a bit of "controlling" behaviour if you do it just to the extent that you restore the balance of power. If you are to buy into this, you have to realise that she probably doesn’t like the side of herself that is being exposed when she picks on you. Maybe she even blames you for "making" her pick on you. She has no excuse. She has the choice not to pick on you. So, isn’t that a good reason to take back your power? Do you want her to hate herself, but not know that she hates herself? Because that is possibly what is happening here. The more she picks on you the more she hates herself. To cope with this she needs to blame someone else and you are the logical one. Because you’ll take it. Repeat cycle. Also, what about the kids? Don’t they deserve parents who treat each other well? Standing up for yourself at the "right times" will go a long way towards helping your kids to see its value. If you want her to hate herself, does that make you any better a person than she is? It doesn’t make any difference how you do it, (let’s be reasonable here), if you put a stop to her picking on you, only take back as much power from her that is needed to restore the balance of your relationship. Don’t let the dizzy feelings of power turn you into that which you are here grumbling about. Instead of just throwing paint on top of the old paint > I sanded the walls, spackled the nail "pops" that have come through > from the house settleing. I then washed the walls by hand before > putting on two coats of paint. In the closet instead of painting > "around" the racks I took the racks completely out, then painted the > closet.

My sitting room needs a lick of paint. Please visit and stay as long as you like. Pumpkin/butternut is tired after five or six years… ********* Summat else. Isn’t she being a little selfish detracting from the value of something that gives you such pleasure/a sense of fulfilment? This is perhaps where you have to be a little selfish (a little selfishness is good) and consider your own needs! Alternative suggestions: Make jokes about the cobwebs you see being spun as you fix things. Or how you should’ve gone to the beach instead of painting the walls. Say things like, did you see the Robertsons down the road built their house in less time than it took me to screw this light bulb in? Ok. These aren’t good examples, but I don’t know you, so you’ll have to think of your own. Say things that give the impression that you aren’t fazed at being a slowcoach. Care should be taken to avoid feeling "less than" when saying the things though, cos she will sense that. :: Comments like the above also serve as affirmations :: – Michaela

5 hours per week is not at all too much to exercise (unless you have some medical issue). If you have an understanding that you’re going to do house projects as well, you just have to balance that in in a way that both of you can accept. If you only have 10 hours of spare time per week, and after including stretching and showering that leaves only two hours for house work, I can see how that could be a problem. But most people have more time than that in a week.

I read somewhere about marriage tips. If your partner is suggesting that they might leave you, tell them, "do let me know when, I’ll help ya pack your bags". Then they wont threaten you about leaving.

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong based on what you’ve said, and I think that unless you’re approaching her more than once a day, it reflects poorly on her that she’s turning down sex. When we are toghter > during the weeknight she is doing some house work or more times than > not reading a book. > I have told her before I would like to go hiking but she is not an > "outdoors" person. > I have never once in my life turned down sex! (Although unfortunately > she has, a lot!)

Not sure. I used to know the difference between the types but if it helps I weigh about 180 and 6 feet tall. I have always looked slender even though I am not. > > Sun-Thur I use a barbell and do 3 sets of overhead presses. Then 3 sets > > of shoulder shrugs, then 3 sets with lighter weight of overhead presses > > where you go behind the back and in front. > > Then I do 3 sets of tricep extensions with a dumbell. Then 3 sets of > > curls with a barbell finishing up with three sets of dumbell curls. > So you train shoulders, trapezius, triceps and biceps. What about

your pectoralis and latissimus? What about your legs? If you really want to build muscle you should concentrate on exercises that involve many muscle groups at once, e.g. Squats, Dead Lifts, Bench Presses, Dips, Bent-Over Rows. Overhead Presses are ok but you’re probably wasting your time with those triceps extensions and biceps curls. I know, I have done the cardinal sin of ignoring legs but there is a reason. I dont have a rack or anything really for legs at home. Also, my legs look ok, it is my upper body I would like to improve at least right now. > > I am wondering about this routine as I dont even get sore anymore and I > > cant visably see any more gaines. (Maybe a little) Maybe it is time to > > change my routine. I will admitt I am probably not as agressive as I > > should be and one day I may do 8 reps of one exercise and another I can > > only do 4. I try to increase the weight every two weeks. > Progressiveness is much more important than aggressiveness. As long

as you can increase the weight while maintaining good exercise form everything’s fine. Also keep in mind that nutrition is a very important factor. You must not expect significant gains without a hypercaloric diet (which, of course, opposes your desire for getting leaner — this is the hard part about natural bodybuilding). Yea, I know. I eat light for breakfast and lunch and eat what I want at dinner. (Within reason). I try to eat low carb, high protein. I am not wanting to look like the incredible hulk but would like to gain some in my upper body and lose bodyfat around my stomach. There is not alot there but would like to get down to 10 or 15 % bodyfat. I have not checked in over a year so I might be there now and not know it. Been thinking about getting one of those scales that reads bodyfat.

This depends largely on what your goals are. Are you speaking of bodybuilding training? Do you want to get more mass? Then 5 days / week might be too much for you to recuperate adequately. Read about HIT training (or Heavy Duty as Mike Mentzer called it). I’m not a die-hard HIT advocate but I think there is much truth to it. The more intensive your training is, the less frequent you should train!

I’m a fifth grade teacher in a suburban elementary school. Our fourth and fifth graders work up to running the mile, and our PE teacher does use heart rate monitors with them. The teacher was able to get the monitors by writing an educational grant that covered the expense. My own children ran a mile every Friday throughout middle school in this same school district. Students could run or walk but most chose to run. Since they were doing it every week it became quite a competition. My son who is now an eighth grader reports his mile times to us every week. He is a soccer player, and Fridays are the only time that he runs simply for the sake of running. He likes it.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have seen that some schools are eliminating the mile run for students in PE class. I have always thought that it was a bad idea to grade students on how fast they can run the mile, but eliminating it is wrong. Are there any PE teachers that still have the mile run as part of the fitness testing?

Response:

I think what they should do instead of eliminating it, is to have the students wear heart-rate monitors and tell them they must be in their target heart rate zone for a set amount of time. Where would the schools get the money for HRMs? (There’s also the practical issue of the variability in MHR in the population.)

And they would have to be "cross-talk" free HRM as well. But why does exercise need to be this high-tech. Get moving in fun activities that improve strength, endurance, agility, and coordination. Perhaps knowing how the heart functions and how it responds to exercise is a useful life skill but it can be measured manually. And a lot of younger children could use the extra practice with arithmetic. How about we save taxpayer dollars?

Response:

At my 9 year old’s Elementary School they have a running program where 3 days a week they run as many laps as they can. After they get 20 laps 5 miles they get a foot. Each child receive a prize at the end of the year and those with the highest miles receives a high mileage t-shirt. We have an organization here called the Rapides Junior Runners – 5 & under run 1/2 Mile, 6-10 run 1 mile, and 11 and over run 2 miles. Each child that crosses the finish line receives a medal and they award trophies to the top 3 in each age group and by male or female. Check out more by visiting www.getfitcenla.org

Dan, I am a PE major and agree with you that it is a bad idea to grade students on how fast they run the mile. In my high school they still had the mile run as part of the Presidential Fitness Tests. I think what they should do instead of eliminating it, is to have the students wear heart-rate monitors and tell them they must be in their target heart rate zone for a set amount of time. If they don’t, then they will not get the points for that activity or however they are evaluated for the day. Anyone else have any comments? -Heather

Screw the HR. For one thing that is an expense not many schools are going to take on. Just have them run for as long as they want and whatever pace they want just so they keep moving for 30 or 40 minutes. The less structure and the less it seems like punishment the better.

Come to California. My oldest son ran the mile for time in PE starting in sixth grade. And seventh grade. This was not part of a presidential fitness test, and it was done several times (for time) during the school year. No thoughts of eliminating it. My youngest was able to run a mile (not timed or graded) in his school running club (no kidding, there is a running club for grades 2-5) in second grade. Maybe this is part of the reason that California athletes kick everybody else’s butt by the time they’re high school seniors (and the college recruiters coming to the California State Meet know it).
Using a HRM to guage exercise activity (not necessarily limited to running) is part of the state curriculum guidelines for 7th grade PE in California. The idea is to teach a life skill; In high school cross country we do not use HRMs. BTW, we also have homework for PE in middle and high schools. This is a daily activity log to try to encourage kids to do at least 20 min/day of exercise activity outside of school to counteract the trend toward teenage obesity.
I have seen that some schools are eliminating the mile run for students in PE class. I have always thought that it was a bad idea to grade students on how fast they can run the mile, but eliminating it is wrong. Are there any PE teachers that still have the mile run as part of the fitness testing?

Dan, I am a PE major and agree with you that it is a bad idea to grade students on how fast they run the mile. In my high school they still had the mile run as part of the Presidential Fitness Tests. I think what they should do instead of eliminating it, is to have the students wear heart-rate monitors and tell them they must be in their target heart rate zone for a set amount of time. If they don’t, then they will not get the points for that activity or however they are evaluated for the day. Anyone else have any comments? -Heather

For trails, http://www.trailrunner.com/ but this only has events that people send in to them (probably small percent of races that are out there). Local schedules are probably more complete or check at local running store. Dot — "So many people get stuck in the routine of life that their dreams waste away.
Response:

Also, if I wanted to again participate in a 5K race, i would definitely eat carbs prior. 5k is a very short run that is run at high intensity. I could never run much longer distances at high intensity, high or low carb.

I’m begining to think you are trolling!! -DF

Response:

Well for whatever reason, none of the people in my running club are fat, and none of them need low carb diets to stay in shape. The fact that their running burns 3,000-10,000 calories a week might have *something* to do with it, what do you think ?

Donovan, this is cross posted to low carb folks. To agree with us is tantamount to their diet is crock of shit. Save you energy, the LC folks are like those still believing in the flat earth theory. -DF

That’s all I had to go on. And yes of course I agree every trail races is its own species. Still, comparing the courses at finger lakes 50s to the GroundHog 50k, I would say finger lakes is easier, especially because of the steepness of many of the hills at GroundHog. The winning race times for these 2 races are comparable, though slower at F.L. 50s this year and last year, but you have to remember F.L. 50s is run in July and is usually hot. – Tony

Goal: Stay injury free, work up to 15-20 mpw. with 3 mi of speed work This week I did not run…at all. Swamped from all sides. Sun: 5 K race – El Grito 5K – finished in 27:50. A little slower than anticipated, but a couple of factors likely contributed – lack of sleep, not training this last week, and high overall stress level. Plus…I took out the first mile way too fast. Amusingly, I tend to think of myself as a negative splitter. Not in this race… Having a time does help me sort of gauge training though. I’m going to try for more base building per the McMillan website for the next couple of weeks.

Mon: 1 hour bike HR: avg 132 Tue: 20′ bike, 35′ run, 15′ bike Wed: A short story. As usual I rode my bike from home (about 4k) and left it locked up near my inter-city bus stop. Typically on the return home, I ride the bike to a local park, run for 35-55 mins, and then ride 15 mins home. On the way home, the bus came to a stop. Not a crawling slow traffic jam, but an absolute stop. Drivers got out of their cars to stretch, talk, smoke whatever. After staying put for about 20 mins, and finding out via cellphone that the road was blocked due to fires near the road, I decided to jump off the bus and run for a while… I guess I was about 20 kms from home – doable – although the entrance to Jerusalem involves a lot of climbing. I had my running clothes (and my bike helmet) in my rucksack, and discretely changed and was on my way. All was well while the traffic was stopped, but of course, after about 10 minutes the fires were controlled, and the traffic started moving. This section of the highway has a very narrow shoulder and almost no emergency lane, so, valuing my life more than a comfortable pace, I hopped over the barrier and starting "running" over rocks, trees, a dead dog (yuck), and dodging signposts. I also ran past the smouldering fires – lots of flashpoints in the valley below, so that when I met my wife some 50 minutes later about half-way home, I was black on one side. My wife dropped me at the bike and I rode home. Thu: off No running. Our running club had its annual general meeting. Guest of honour was Haile Satain, the Israel olympic marathoner who finished Atehns in 2:17 and 20th place at age 42. Great run. It depends on what you mean by serious. I think Linda and Pete just want serious answers to their serious questions, rather than having to wade through all the banter amongst the trollers. They may not qualify as serious runners from a speed/mpw/racing point of view. But anyone that wants to come here to learn and share needs to be given some respect as a serious runner. The best way to avoid the non-running BS is to create a kill file and plonk the worst trolls. I’ll give most new trolls a fair chance. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!! RAther funny coming from a troll. One whose 99% of contribution on this group can be classified into three categories: 1) Inane pro-right wing posts 2) Attacks on SwStudio 3) Meaningless OT replies to serious posts, intended solely to pick

Especially if I come here to learn and share knowlege related to running. Granted, I myself am probably in quite a few kill files, and that’s fine, because I got caught up in all the non-running, "Bush vs the human rights activists" posts. So I deserve to be there. I am still trying to sort out trolls from non-trolls.
The trolls will throw out some good information once in a while just to stay out of your kill file. It’s usually not worth having to read the other 99% of the garbage.
And why don’t you sing songs for me? Huh?

Actually I heard one the other day that would be appropriate, and it reminded me of you, it was by an irish guy who does a lot of work for the "Cam Neely foundation" and the song is titled "I’m an a**hole". It goes "I’m an a**hole, a**hole, I’m an a**hole, a**hole" etc etc. Do a search on WinMX for the mp3.

Sometimes it’s hard for, as someone else mentioned, someone with troll-like behavior will sometimes give what appears to be pretty rational information. I was Googling on Saw Palmetto one day and happened across alt.baldspot. If you are interested in a newsgroup that has gone to hell, stop by that one. There are a couple of posters there that have made trolling an art and have taken it to the next step — it makes the trolls here looke like wannabes. D. Wells Remove the numbers to mail me.
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – A number of us are serious about running. It depends on what you mean by serious. Well, that depends on what you mean by depends. I think Linda and Pete just want serious answers to their serious questions, I’d like to know how to cure brain cancer, AIDS, and world hunger. But if I post here requesting this, I won’t get any serious responses, because no-one knows.

A lot of people here seem to know a lot about who best can run the USA, including yourself. There certainly is quite a bit of serious discussion about that. rather than having to wade through all the banter amongst the trollers. Wah wah wah wah wah. Trolls are part of unmoderated forums.

Who’s crying? Not I. I gave a perfectly good way to ignore the trolls. No problems here. Again, serious according to whose standards? Serious is a state of mind. There are no externally imposed

standards. It seemed you were imposing your standards. I stand corrected. Anyone, even overweight, baby-stroller-pushing,

caloricly-challenged newbies, can be a serious runners, IMO. Overweight runners can be serious, but serious runners have trouble staying overweight for very long.

It depends on your definition of overweight. Overweight by serious runners’ standards could be considered too thin by the masses. Some members of my running club could stand to lose about 20 pounds. They’ve been that way for years. They are serious runners. At least by my loosely imposed standards. tkb

I think Linda and Pete just want serious answers to their serious questions

As many have pointed out, it could hardly be termed a ’serious question’. But anyone that wants to come here to learn and share needs to be given some respect as a serious runner.

Y’see, that’s where we differ. I believe respect has to be earned. It isn’t an assumed-until-proven-otherwise attribute. The best way to avoid the non-running BS is to create a kill file and plonk the worst trolls.

Why most folk don’t follow this advice is beyond me. I’ll give most new trolls a fair chance.

boring. Heresy! Heresy! Especially if I come here to learn and share knowlege related to running.

So, don’t open, read or reply to trolls. It’s not like they’re hard to spot. Problem solved. Granted, I myself am probably in quite a few kill files, and that’s fine, because I got caught up in all the non-running, "Bush vs the human rights activists" posts. So I deserve to be there.

I missed that. Should I killfile you? Again, serious according to whose standards? Anyone, even overweight, baby-stroller-pushing, caloricly-challenged newbies, can be a serious runners, IMO.

Really for running? No. We tend to use the roads, trails and parks for running. The newsgroup we use to chatter amongst ourselves about subjects that may, or may not, be directly related to running. It was ever thus, and ever will be. Or is this newsgroup used for other purposes?

Oh, you mean the wind-ups? Let me explain. Like any good broad-spectrum antibiotic, this group can cure all sorts of disease. You have a problem with technical training? Lyndon, Sam and Donny pop along. Mystical running? Oz is your man. Desert running? Common. Ultras? Stumpus, Freese, et al. Girlie stuff? Mary049, joe p., Teresea. And so on… For each element within running there are a number of conflicting – and usually contrary – opinions on ‘how best to achieve your goals’. My take on the matter is that running is an activity best learned through personal experience – i.e. you make mistakes, you learn, you adapt, you accumulate knowledge, you get better. Given that we are not running to survive, but for fun, I think this process of self-education is a core part of the activity. Others disagree. So I tease them. Do people — runners — who use this group understand my question?

As a runner who uses this group, I’d have to say "no". Does this matter? Probably not. As long as one person does, that’s fine. OTOH, if no-one understand you, are you *really* asking a question? Are you? Huh?

sounds to me like you are making progress by evaluating what happened and you also seem to be making a plan to keep your success going, good for you, Lee

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Well, I did not eat well nor recover well from being on vacation (going to my father’s for the July 4 weekend). I started out ok (except for the chocolate chip cookies the 1st night) and progressively got worse with the sweets; regular food was OK except for too much peanut butter). We came back to Dallas on Monday night, and whenever DH and I return from a holiday weekend like that, we have a hard time getting back on track (meal-wise and otherwise). I was feeling rather disgusted with myself with my apparent inability to control myself (although I was very picky on what I binged on!), then I decided this was not much different from the 2 weeks I went to England and Rome last November and ate seemingly non-stop. (OK, I don’t have the excuse of the great Italian food and the very good/I- hardly-ever-have-it British food!) I know I’ll lose the weight I regained (not much, I haven’t been very good at weighing myself first thing in the morning, but I’ve gained about 4 to 5 pounds, and even had some water weight on top of that). So I’ll probably have to pay the next time I have to weigh in (for those who don’t remember, I just made lifetime 2 weeks ago); I have the ticket. I think I let the desire not to pay anymore rush me a bit in my weight loss. I’ve been keeping up on my exercise (even stepping it up a bit), and that’s pretty good. I even bought some good running shoes Friday so I can start running outside and join a running club. But I digress. I was even avoiding reading this group because I didn’t want to whine about my problems when 1) I really think I’ve had it pretty good and 2) I don’t make enough supportive posts (time management is one of the things I’m working on). However, I am posting now. I’ve given myself permission to be a bit free on the food today before I get back on track with eating and other stuff tomorrow (esp. since I did a major workout today, and did it feel good!). Yes, I did "resolve" to get back on track each day, but I didn’t follow through. I’ve learned (nothing is a failure if you learn from it!) that I think I need to incorporate more sweets (my weakness the past week) into my regular diet so I don’t eat too much when I do have access to them. I think this also has been part of a self-defeating tendency on my part (I gained quite a bit after I made goal as well). Something definitely to work on! Sorry if this seems a bit rambly, but I’ve had so much going through my head that to write it all down would be a major undertaking and I don’t want to put y’all through that. And I’ve been a bit heavy on the parentheicals, but oh well. Thanks for listening, and congratulations to the losers!
Finding the balance between sweets-deprivation and sweets-binging can be tricky business. I struggle with that myself. When I eliminate all sweets from my diet, I usually don’t miss them past the first few uncomfortable days. But once I start eating sweets, I want more and more. Your exercise plan sounds good. Keep doing what works. (OK, I don’t have the excuse of the great Italian food and the very good/I- hardly-ever-have-it British food!) So I’ll probably have to pay the next time I have to weigh in (for those who don’t remember, I just made lifetime 2 weeks ago); I have the ticket. I think I let the desire not to pay anymore rush me a bit in my weight loss. I’ve been keeping up on my exercise (even stepping it up a bit), and that’s pretty good. I even bought some good running shoes Friday so I can start running outside and join a running club. But I digress.
Sorry to hear the struggle, but we are here. I know you can get back on track and get back to where you need to be. We all have our moments that cause us to go nuts with the foods. That is how we ended up here to begin with. Remember we are trying to change the bad habits into good ones. A habit takes years to change. It took most of us at least 20 years to get the bad habit, how long do you think it will take to rewrite our brain to the good habit. These habits have been in our head since being a kid, now we have to rethink and relive to get them out. I know it is not easy and this is a lifestyle change.
Hi folks– Just had my first podiatrist visit, for some foot and ankle problems that I’ve had for 3 months or so and haven’t gotten any better. I’m now taped up on my right foot for a week (a *j- strap* with padding taping), in order to immobilize my foot and ankle and also provide a bit of padding for my arch. Right now, I’m only supposed to do minimal walking (short walk of 20 min or so, in addition to incidental walking to shop, etc) till my next visit on July 6th. Hopefully this will help, but I guessing it won’t be the full solution, since I’ve had this problem (plus a number of other biomechanical issues with my left foot) for awhile–but he’s doing this route first because I don’t have insurance and of course I want to keep the cost down. I don’t remember spraining my ankle previously, butt obviously I did something significant enough to cause something to go wrong. How long did it take some of you to recover and get so that you were able to run/walk again? I haven’t been able to run without pain for a few months now– Jean in VA — "If you are going through hell, keep going." Winston Churchill

Hope you recover fast. If this does not work, I would suggest you go to a "running clinic" that will have hopefully a "running" podiatrist that can diagnose you fast and give you answers to your questions. Not sure where in VA you live but I know that C’ville has a running clinic. Might be run through UVA services.
thanks for the reply–actually, the podiatrist I saw yesterday is one of the team physicians for W & M–and treats the track and CC teams in addition to all of my *walking wounded* friends in my local running club–so for now I’ll stay with this guy, as I’d say he is pretty well versed on how to deal with athletes at all levels–older and slower ones like me, as well as competitive intercollegiate and regional *stars* who consistently win local and regional races.
Jean, I too made my first visit to a podiatrist, but I have a few questions. Why is it required to strip completely naked for a foot exam? And what’s with the bending over and saying "oh yes baby" stuff? I thought his tongue tickled between my toes too. Do all pods do it this way? Funny thing was, afterwards I felt like I needed a shower… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi folks– Just had my first podiatrist visit, for some foot and ankle problems that I’ve had for 3 months or so and haven’t gotten any better. I haven’t been able to run without pain for a few months now– Jean in VA

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – thanks for the reply–actually, the podiatrist I saw yesterday is one of the team physicians for W & M–and treats the track and CC teams in addition to all of my *walking wounded* friends in my local running club–so for now I’ll stay with this guy, as I’d say he is pretty well versed on how to deal with athletes at all levels–older and slower ones like me, as well as competitive intercollegiate and regional *stars* who consistently win local and regional races. Jean in VA .
I’ve had a fair share of injuries over decades of running and I’m still surprised with new ones occasionally. You probably would not have this pain/injury if you did not run.(duh) You could have stopped running and self-imobilized your own ankle and saved the doctor’s fees. I can’t critize a first visit though because it tells you what the professional thinks and lets you know what the options might be. I see an injury, especially a minor one, as an opportunity for you to access you running form and equipment. What is there about these that gets you into pain? You can begin to analyze and try different things. Begin a logical process of changing something and testing it for shorter runs. If it doesn’t work, discard it. Eventually, you can often hit on something that will resolve the problem from that day forward. And that’s something that you can’t say for simply waiting for it to get better on its own and repeating the injury process.

Then stop emailing me for the Dr’s address. I know it’s the only possible way you could ever get laid, but you’ll just have to face a life of jacking off into a sock, while the rest of us have lives.
