Worn out shoes!
Question:
When my toes are pokin’ through and I can see the soles of my feet in the trail!
In reality, I do what you just did – my body just tells me it’s time for new rubber. .mark – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Can you tell when your shoes are worn out and you need a new pair? What are the symptoms of shoe burn-out? I recently bought a new pair of New Balance shoes and the difference I notice is amazing. My old pair of Reebox Mojos were well worn out and making my muscles sore and running really fatiguing, I had only had them for 7 months but they have been everywhere with me on my jogging journey. Now my New Balance shoes have shock absorbers and today I ran around the Albert Park lake twice and wanted to do another lap of the lake (5km) but thought I was getting to keen, felt like I was running on cushions and the fatigue has disappeared, no muscle aches anymore. (SNIP) the fatigue has disappeared, no muscle aches anymore. Nicole:)
I think you have partially answered your own question–lingering aches and pains, early fatigue, etc., can be an indicator of worn shoes. Or, you can avoid some of the pain by switching to new shoes *before* they become so worn–the usual rule of thumb is 300-500 miles. Rick Gerwin

New shoes can cover for problems caused by poor form. But not for long – you’d need shoes more often than the 300-500 miles usually quoted. — Ray Charbonneau R107 – End User Computing The MITRE Corporation – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Can you tell when your shoes are worn out and you need a new pair? I wait until the toebox has worn through where my toes flex (not when there’s just a big-toe hole – when they have torn right across the front). This generally happens before the sole wears out, although I ‘discovered’ the 3DF concept long before Reebok! People at my club will vouch for this. The night before the London Marathon one year I was up until 11pm darning my trainers. I kid you not. They held together pretty well. I don’t count how many miles I do in each pair of trainers, but I guess I do about 2000 miles per pair. I’ve been pretty much injury free throughout my ‘career’. Nathan

The general rule you’re going to hear is: 6 months or 300-500 miles depending on your size and where you run. I’m 6′3", so I don’t think I’ve ever had a pair that lasted 500 miles. I change shoes if I get done and notice any pains where they shouldn’t be that aren’t just sore muscles. Kirk Philadelphia, PA (Leave nospam off to send e-mail)

Hi Nicole, I have drastically changed my views on when to change shoes, even after nearly 20 years running I am still learning ! My average mileage is about 45 mpw for the year and I regulary used to use a pair for maybe 9 months. I have suffered with severe Hallux Rigidus in my left big toe joint for many years with almost no flexibility in the joint. After buying my last pair of Saucony Jazz 5000 I kept a spread sheet on the mileage of these shoes, I have previously had this brand 3 times with no problems. After about 500 miles the toe joint was getting worse, due I think to the bruising from underneath. I changed to Nike Zoom Elite, a shoe I have never worn before, and also changed my clapped out racing flats. Within weeks I have been walking pain free, especially after races, for the first time in years. My toe joint now has about 70% flexibility and I am getting to the point I can actually push off on it. Look after your feet, they are your best friend !!
