War & rr

Question:

OK, He’s gonna start the war before NCAA March Madness Basketball starts and won’t start the war while the US Stock market is open.   Hence true to his word I expect it to start 48 hours after he gave notice however a couple of hours before the markets open in America.  I figure the between 9pm and 5am EST Wednesday. I live in NYC and ran on 9/11…….that very tragic day….saw the flume of smoke as I ran in fact….that day and for numerous days afterward.   It felt odd and strange in that I ran great.  I noticed that day and for several weeks thereafter the tragic nature of events produced my best effort…..I suppose I was appreciating the lot I have in life….and how fortunate I am.   I wonder how I’m going to feel about running and posting about running when the War starts.   Business as usual?   I wonder.  I think some racing events are going to be cancelled this weekend…and others will have lower than usual turnouts.   So are you runners in a "business as usual mode" w/all this stuff going down (war)?  For me it just feels/strikes "uncomfortable" and a little too trivial to carry on "business as usual" in light of events. So what was rr like on 9/11?  I am sure it was not business as usual around here for several days if not weeks…. Andrew…..

I’ll be traveling to Boston for the Marathon in a few weeks.  The impending war has been on my mind for some time, especially when considering that some of the airliners highjacked for the WTC attack were Boston to California flights. I don’t think I’ll cancel my plans unless things get really crazy, but it certainly won’t be business as usual.         By odd coincidence, I’ve been reading a book called "Heartbreak Hill", that is a fictional account of a lone terrorist who decides to stage an attack on the Boston Marathon course because of the large crowds involved.  Kind of sobering given recent events.  I suspect that Boston won’t be as much of a party atmosphere as it has been in past years. Keep in mind that there are futures markets that trade more or less around the clock.  You can "bet" on the market by going long or short the S&P 500 almost any time.  Ditto for currency, interest rate, and certain commodities.  And there are certain US stocks that trade in places like London, just as there are Chinese stocks that trade (as ADRs) here. BTW, in percentage terms, the best performing market in the world this year has been the Baghdad Stock Exchange.  NO KIDDING!!! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hence true to his word I expect it to start 48 hours after he gave notice however a couple of hours before the markets open in America.  I figure the between 9pm and 5am EST Wednesday. There were posts here (perhaps a "bit" more off topic than normal).  One thing that I remember were all of the very nice messages of concern from our friends on the other side of the Atlantic: Never forget about this, either.  I was tempted to start a thread asking whether "real" runners ran or stayed home that day, but didn’t as I feared NYCers like yourself.  I remember one particular track meet that was cancelled but almost all races went on as scheduled. I had a tempo run on 9/11 and ran as scheduled.  At the end of the run I "ran into" a good local road runner (early 50’s and high 16’s for 5K) who said he was "bummed out" by the event, but he and his club did some kind of workout that day.  I just tuned everything out and did exactly what I was supposed to do that day. I’m racing in an NCAA track meet on Saturday…on a true mondo track.  I seriously doubt that any of the college kids seeking qualifying times  is staying home.  But for road racers, there could be a problem if all of the off duty police officers that normally provide security at races are working that day because of heightened security. There used to be a Nike clothing ad showing Bob Kennedy working out in absolutely miserable conditions.  At the bottom the ad said:    "because the other guy will" Lyndon "Speed Kills…It kills those that don’t have it!"  –US Olympic Track Coach Brooks Johnson

In the above sentence I meant to say that I was tempted to start a thread asking whether "real" runners  ran or stayed home that day, but didn’t as I feared NYCers like yourself might have taken offense. Lyndon

good luck w/your meet lyndon.    i saw the Bataan Memorial Death March (Marathon) set for March 30 has been cancelled.   It was set to take place ironically at the Whits Sands Missile Range in NM. more irony?  the washington dc marathon is set for sunday….of all weekends…the war starts tonight….do you think there’s a chance some protesting and security concerns will be taking place in the washington dc this weekend?   this has got to be an unbelievable headache for race officials.  Orange Alert, Protestors in mass no doubt, you know the airports are going to be terrible once the bombing starts…..i just don’t see a "festive mood" taking place in DC this weekend….more like a stress paranoia mood.    I bet there’s a lot of pressure in fact to postpone this race….The city’s resources are going to be too focused on other things and they may not feel they can secure the event.   I know 2 registered runners who are simply blowing off the DC marathon in fact just due to the hassle/stress factor now thrown into the equation….and the other big race event this weekend?   Rome Marathon…and protest are planned for the US Embassy in Rome as soon as the bombing starts…… andrew….

I didn’t think there was an up side to this war, but if it will make joggers refrain from posting…

No doubt.  I haven’t seen the course map, but if it’s to go near the Capitol or White House, I expect there may well be some last minute rerouting.   My running club is staffing a water table at mile 6.  Could be an ‘interesting’ experience.  (Certainly we haven’t yet been told of the race being cancelled.)   As far as protestors go, though, I have a feeling they won’t be much of a concern in themselves.  Administration-prompted responses might.  But St. Patrick’s day 10k on Saturday through a protest was quite unaffected aside from the increased obviousness of city and Capitol police.  The protestors peacefully walked, sat, or marched as they chose and got on with their business while letting the runners get on with theirs. — Robert Grumbine http://www.radix.net/~bobg/ Science faqs and amateur activities notes and links. The first thing they have to do is get rid of the NC farmer threatening to blow himself up.  The nimrod has pretty much shut down the city.

He drove his John Deere into the pond between the Viet Nam memorial and the Washington Mem. So what was rr like on 9/11?

100+ empty articles were posted there and elsewhere under a single subject header by a large number of people from all over the world on the 11th and 12th. My response can be found by search under "Declaration of War" dated the 12th.  What was called for in there is being fulfilled even as we speak.

Response:

At first I thought cancelling the DC marathon was just yet another reason to hate Bush (starting invasions we didn’t ask for and then asking us to sacrifice) but I suspect there is a more sinister explanation having to do with H2O Entertainment using war as an excuse for them to cut their losses.  These people are seriously alienating the running community. H2O screwed up the inaugural DC marathon and now, rather than re-route the 2nd annual marathon to accommodate security issues (that should have been foreseen for months), they are keeping our $80 registration fees and sending us packing less than a week before the event. H2O should go back to organizing rock concerts and let runners organize road races. I will not register for any more H2O events.  I hope others will follow the same advice.
