Treadmill

Categories: nike running

Question:

I am new here so go easy on me. I am looking for a treadmill to use on those too hot/cold/wet days.  I am prepared to spend $1000 and slightly more than that if necessary. — Spend your money on shoes and running clothes instead.

Thanks, but when a guy has more shoes and tights than his sister, you *know* something else is needed. =) /             / | oo       oo |/ ||     |||     ||    Pete, ||             ||  |     ===     |       //|

Hey peoples: I am new here so go easy on me. I have a question that I feel your collective wisdoms can answer for me:  I am looking for a treadmill to use on those too hot/cold/wet days.  I am prepared to spend $1000 and slightly more than that if necessary.  I took a look at some of the "serious" treamills like Precore, Star Track, Spirit, etc, but they all are way over my budget in the $2500+ region.  So these $1000 Pro*Form treadmills that they sell at department stores and large sports-stores such as Sports Authorities seem very attractive.  I am into mountain biking so buying sports equipment from department stores and Sports Authorities isn’t something I thought I would ever do.  Space isn’t really a concern, but noise is. I am prepared to pay for quality, but not more than I need. Try the nearest Healthrider store.  I have their new Softstrider treadmill and find it very comfortable and hardy.  I’ve had it six months and, between my wife and I , put about 10-15 miles per week on it at a good clip.  Very good design and quality. — Tri Your Hardest! Darrin Bartlett

Here are some of the reasons:

No need to repeat what Jim said.  Those are all good reasons for running on a treadmill instead of outside.  Mine, though, is very simple…my neighborhood is not conducive to running more than a one-mile loop.  Going beyond that leaves me running heavily travelled two-lane rural roads with no shoulders and 6 ft. drainage ditches.  I got tired of having to run through knee-high grass to keep from having my head knocked off by passing stake trucks.  Given the option, I would rather run on a treadmill with the added benefit of being able to keep an eye on my daughter and give my wife a break.         Now, I am genuinely curious to know why you  (Abhay?) consider that to be "faux"  (translation: fake) running.  I seem to be moving my legs just like other people.  I have certainly seen an increase in muscle mass, I have lost 30 lbs., my heart rate rises significantly.  When I do run outside, I can do just about the same distance at roughly the same speed.  I guess the meer fact that you are outdoors somehow validates the actual physical motion?  I am genuinely puzzled.         Also, I always thought that "real" running was what those Indians did…you now, the ones that run 60 miles or so a day through the desert with no shoes on, simply because they enjoy it.  When you relocate to the desert and stop wearing shoes, can I have them?  Somehow (and honestly, I can’t understand why) all this fake running has worn mine out. Thanks, Brad W.

I do a lot of running on a treadmill, when I can’t get out to run in the "real world." Here are some of the reasons: I have a problem finding running surfaces outdoors which will not hurt my feet during running (using Nike Air Max shoes), in that the areas around my home are covered with concrete. A few miles away I can find some asphalt or gravel roads, but it takes quite a drive to get to them. — So, from a time standpoint, the treadmill is far more convenient. I can watch the morning news while riding the treadmill, then cool down quickly under the fan and airconditioning. In our area in the Southwest, it’s hot as hell these days. Since I am not in tremendous shape, I have to be somewhat careful in running outside in the heat. — I find that I am able to run faster, and get myheart rate up (using a Polar pulse monitor) running on the tradmill in the air conditioning more readily than running outside in the heat. I formerly had some pretty serious foot problems when running outside on concrete or asphalt surfaces. At one point, I had to get an operation for planters warts under the heel, and use heavy orthopedic shoes throughout the day. — This is a major hassle. On the other hand, when I run on a treamill, I never have problems with my feet. — The running surface is cushioned and has some give to it.   Since I work rather long hours, the remaining hours available for running are ususally in the morning, before the sun comes up. This is of no consequence on the treadmill, but it is difficult to run in the dark on the streets. The treadmill has the advantage that I can set the speed and incline to the positions which I know will provide a good workout. — Often, all I have to do is set the speed at a good pace, knowing that it will do the job and provide a reasonably good workout. Outside, of course, I have to adjust the speed as I go to get a good workout. (On a good day, with good weather and a good soft runningsurface, I do think that it is somewhat easier to get a vigorous workout outside, so if the conditions are right, I do prefer to get outside for several workouts per week.) The treadmill is always available. — In rainy weather, snow, heat, dark or light, morning or evening. And I can always watch TV while running. — So, it is more dependable on those days when it is inconvenient or uncomfortable to run outside. I can adjust it for an easy workout. — flat incline, and moderate speed. — or a difficult one. — high incline, increasing speed. — Jim Cate

Just curious, is there a particular reason why you don’t do real running i.e. run outside, and prefer faux running i.e. treadmills?

For some of us ‘real running’ is not always possible (and nowhere in the original post was any reference made to ‘preferring faux running’).  I live (and farm) in a rural area, and have opted for a treadmill.  I do prefer outdoor running, but I cannot always fit it into my schedule.  We live on a busy road (with heavy gravel truck usage through the daylight hours), so I prefer not to run (or cycle) on or along our road.  Of course there are no street lights so night running is out of the question.  As a result I typically run on a trail though a nearby river conservation area (5 minutes down the road).  This works well except when it rains, as the trail turns to mud, or in the winter, since the trail is typically impassable (unless you have a snowmobile).  I am definitely NOT a morning person, so early morning runs are not an option for me.  Lastly, I have a wife and two kids, who I prefer to spend my after work hours with, and typically when I do my outdoor runs this is where I ’steal’ the time.  Typically when the kids have gone to bed, it is already too dark to do a trail run. It gets very dark in the bush at dusk, especially with my eyesight.  Thus my only option is the treadmill.  I can run at 9 or 11 o’clock at night without a problem.  If you can think of any other options to get me outside on my runs, I’d like to hear them.   — Regards,         Martin Donkers

I’m one of those treadmill people. I don’t run really fast but just for conditioning and good health. But when running outside, I was nearly run over TWICE. Once in broad daylight. And going out when it’s cold or raining makes my workout too easy to duck out. But having a TM at home makes it easy to get up and go run before my morning shower. Or if my schedule is really demanding I can run late at night after I get home. And it’s nice to keep track of my mileage on the machine (in a fairly precise way). I like to listen to music when I run. So I have a CD player near the machine and use headphones. Doesn’t bother anyone else. The TM seems softer than the street as well. So I run slowly but I do ~ 120 miles/month (unless some un-planned issue takes control). Tom S. — ‘You can’t roller skate in a Buffalo herd, but you can be happy if you’ve a mind to – ‘ Roger Miller

I am appropriately covered at all times, but my butt is so cute that women have told me that if I had been gay I would probably have been tempted to ask myself out. I have found that I have more more fun with women indoors than out.

I will amend your above line to my experience: "I have found that I have more fun with women, in women rather than out of them."

Response:

I used to put in 10 miles a day on my treadmill (Aerobics Pacemaster) because I lived at the time in a large city and because of my job I was only able to run in the early morning in the dark or late at night. After a woman was stabbed to death while jogging (and pushing her toddler in a jogger stroller) in my neighborhood, I decided to utilize my treadmill as something other than a clothes hanger.  As soon as I moved out of this city and into a very small town, though, I resumed running outside immediately. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Just curious, is there a particular reason why you don’t do real running i.e. run outside, and prefer faux running i.e. treadmills?  Do you live in a very cold climate?   Or shy about being seen in shorts in public or some other reason? I have a Pacemaster as does one of my friends (actually his wife).  I’m very pleased with it. I don’t work for any company associated with Pacemaster – just a happy customer Abhay, you are jumping to conclusions – not a good thing to do at your thesis defense. Nowhere did the poster say he preferred to run indoors.  Instead there may be circumstances in his life that make running on a treadmill an extremely convenient way to continue running. Why would someone run on a treadmill?  It could be something as wonderful as a new baby (Hey, I never get back to sleep after the 4 am feeding – jump on the ‘mill and get a run in) or as sad as caring for a dying parent ( Can’t leave them alone).
