Shoes and Gels
Question:
I use Race Ready "Long Distance" shorts. They have 5 or so mesh pockets along the back, which can hold 1-2 gel packets each. They’re extremely comfortable and hold the gel securely without much bouncing. I eat a gel packet about every 40 minutes or so on long runs (I.e. anything much over an hour). -Ekr
Where can I get these shorts? James

I buy them at The Runners High in Menlo Park, CA. However, I believe you can order them directly from Race Ready. Their number is 800.537.6868. If not, they should be able to tell you where to get them. -Ekr — [Eric Rescorla Terisa Systems, Inc.] "Put it in the top slot."

Does anyone have any tips for good training shoes. I overpronate and I will be running 40-50 miles a week. Also, I need a wide toe-box. Any thoughts on the Brooks Beast? The Brooks radius was comfortable but didn’t have enough support. Another question: I want to start using power-gels on my long runs (15+) and maybe water. Any thoughts on how to carry this stuff? Maybe some kind of pouch. And also, Where can I get these kind of things?

SNIP Another question: I want to start using power-gels on my long runs (15+) and maybe water. Any thoughts on how to carry this stuff? Maybe some kind of pouch. And also, Where can I get these kind of things? I’ve seen little squeezable bottles for power-gel that attach to your water belt, or that come with their own belt. They hold 2-3 gel pouches I think. Other people have suggested actually adding it to your water to make it easier to eat (less gooey and sweet!). You should be able to find them at most running stores.
I always wear lycra shorts (usually cylcling shorts) on long runs and have found I can tuck one or two gel packs under the lycra on the front of my quads. They don’t fall out and they don’t chafe. I just about forget about them until it’s time to take them. No muss, no fuss, no safety pins, no fanny pack, no pockets.

I would enthusiastically recommend the Nike Air Equilibrium. Great motion control … but they don’t feel like a motion control shoe ! They’re very smooth. I tried a pair of the Beasts. They felt like I wearing bricks on my feet … compared to the Equilibriums. The toe box is also wider than previous Nike models. I can usually carry 2 GUs in the key pocket of my shorts. -Keith — Technology Service Corp. | Fax: (423) 769 – 4606 (call first) Bloomington, IN | WWW: http://www.tsc.com/css —
