Heat Stroke/Heat Exhaustion-Take Care!! Was: So this is why they call it LSD

Question:

Nina, your body is telling you something, and it ain’t "Hey, let’s go for another run!" Thanks Mike, Layne, & Ozzie. It is indeed quite obvious that I should back off here, and I will take your advice very seriously. Sigh. At least I can buy new running shoes tonight and dream of using them later. :) ni"getting withdrawal symptoms and resorting to pringles"na

and just go for a swim while giving your running body a break, Nina! and as for the Pringles… oh, man…. they are a new-found sin food for me. i’ve always like chips, managed to lick my frequent eat-the-whole-bag problem, THEN i discovered Pringles. a whole tube is a pre-dinner snack for me!  :) just gotta keep working out to stave off the Pringles padding… Cam

The thought is very very inviting. Cold water all around me, a little gentle exercise… and I LOVE the beach (BTW that’s where I started running – the Coney Island Boardwalk!) The temptation is not quite strong enough to be convincing, though… mainly because (a) the beach is 1 hour subway ride away and (b) I think it’s not just my running body that needs rest, but the whole package. Maybe I’ll head down there tomorrow, if I feel up for it. as for the Pringles… oh, man…. they are a new-found sin food for me.

I’m usually more of a sweets person (major downfalls: chocolate, cookies, granola (bars and loose), ice cream); today the rare, but very specific craving for sour cream & onion pringles hit. Since I’m in "indulge and pamper" mode anyway, I didn’t fight it too hard. :) just gotta keep working out to stave off the Pringles padding…

Oh, shush. nina

I train with a

POLAR heart monitor within my numbers, a bit into the interval range then walk it off ’till it drops to 125bpm, then off again. You know, I wonder if this incident should make me finally buy an HRM. I’ve never trained with one, maintaining I’d rather learn and ‘feel’ the effort…run but apparently that is not safe. I’m thinking if I’d had an HRM I’d have noticed the numbers shooting up. Any comments? Funny picturing me running with the Fitsense on my left wrist and the HRM on the right one. Since I’m not so happy with the Fitsense anymore, I might just get an integrated gadget (Nike makes one of those right?) nina

Then just goof off. Gotta do it sometimes. Maybe I’ll head down there tomorrow, if I feel up for it. as for the Pringles… oh, man…. they are a new-found sin food for me. Since I started running, I’ve accumulated both a sweet tooth and a craving for savoury foods. so chips and chocolate make the perfect meal. BTW, it’s either pizza-flavoured or the spicy Cajun Pringles that i go for. mmmmmm. must stop this train of thought or i’ll have to wander over to the convenience store. just gotta keep working out to stave off the Pringles padding… Oh, shush.

Yes’m <salutes Cam

Hi Nina, I was wondering why a " .de"  addy,  but living in NY. Welcome to NY!  I live in NY State, I’m not too fond of the hustle and bustle of NY City myself. Maybe you were not acclimatized to a summer run in the heat.  Heck, NY City’s smog will kill you, all on it’s own!  USA NAVY Basic training was such a joke in 1974.  Anytime the heat in Chicago, at Great Lakes NTC went over 90 degrees, PT was cancelled! I bought my POLAR heart monitor, after the heat exhaustion episode, thru a sale catalog that deals with closeouts and end of season overstock items.  My monitor when I bought it was probably two years old, but only forty dollars, just a basic unit, better than passing out pushing on my carotid artery to take my pulse. www.sierratradingpost.com I have taught myself how to use a heart monitor, trial & error & observation.  If you do a search at www.google.com I’m sure there is info out there to read.  177bpm is really out of range high for me right now, but 156bpm is too slow.  180bpm is my self imposed cut-off rate now, was 170bpm before, then I walk, as is any temperature over 80 degrees F, I don’t run.  I know from an all out race finish a couple of years ago, my max. was 196bpm.  I had quite a heart workup done last year, so I know my heart is OK, but I do fear another brain bleed, so I kind of play at that borderline threshhold, probably even right now I’m pushing too hard.  I’m coming back from a brain bleed, so I’m still out of shape.  The pulse rate will continue to come down as I train and improve.  I know heat stress will significantly increase my heart rate as I fatigue.   And I am on a blood pressure med called DIOVAN, so that also keeps the numbers lower.  With the DIOVAN, I can’t get into my range walking. I’m in pretty good shape though, I drop to my minimum within about 4 minutes walking.  I run a mixed hill course of 4 miles, but I do no steep hills, yet.  Nice and easy does it.  I really don’t care that much to race, anyways.  My goal is to run everyday at a good clip for an hour to drop weight and general conditioning.  Once upon a time, about 1980 I was doing 18 mile runs, but I found that too much work and not fun.  My best 10 K was 49 minutes, not great.  I’m also an asthmatic, quick starts are not in my being. As to my heart monitor, it is a slim-line flat chested bra.  Without a shirt on it really looks dumb!  Another good reason to run at dusk or dawn! Have a good vacation.  This heat will break in a few days. Kurt RE: a case for HRMs? (was Re: CEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE Re: Heat Stroke
