Chafing

Categories: nike running

Question:

Vasoline doesn’t seem to work well for me, but I may not be using enough. How much works for you?

None. Instead, try Body Glide or Runner’s Lube. jt

Response:

I don’t use it (or anything else) in normal runs, but it works great for me in longer ones. Over 20+ years – with one incident where I missed 3 hours in a marathon by 21 seconds because I had to stop at an aid station for more – I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s impossible, within reason, to put too much Vaseline in my shoes. It works on the insides of my thighs too, but in smaller quantities. And yes, I do my own laundry. Response:

Try the shorts that are tight fitting. I had teh same problem and since changing my shorts it has never returned. Rich Chicago IL

Response:

I too, have thighs that will always rub together no matter what. I just make sure that my shorts are tight and come down at least mid thigh (like bike shorts). The insides of them wear out quickly, but at least my legs aren’t burning. -Sutter

Response:

I’ve cured the thigh chafing problem with a pair of Nike running shorts that have a 7" inseam. These are regular running shorts with a coolmax (or nike equivelant) liner-not bicycle style shorts which get too hot in warm weather. My only problem is I can’t find another pair anywhere. Any suggestions? The closest I’ve seen is 5" inseam by road runner sports. -ssloth I too, have thighs that will always rub together no matter what. On a marathon or long training runs, it can prevent blisters from developing. You’d be surprised at how quickly one can happen, even if you’ve never had problems at shorter distances.   It’s a better to have done it than regret not having done it.  I have chafing in my upper inner thighs during runs over 5 miles.  I tried runner’s lube but no help.  It seems that my legs rub together, though I am slender.  Is Vaseline effective, or shaving?  Maybe longer shorts would help so I rub against the fabric instead of each leg hitting the other.  The chafing happens below the bottom of my shorts.  Brian

Hi, Some people have reported good results by wearing longer shorts (e.g., something like cycling short – except these don’t have the strategically placed padding). Try a liberal amount of baby powder and/or coolmax underwear. Once you get the rash, J&J "medicated" powder helps it heal it without the gooey feel of an ointment. Ben

Sam, I started running in bike shorts a few months ago. No problems with upper thigh chafe anymore. If you don’t want to try that, try some Chafe Eez by Second wind. Works like a damn! The best thing to do is get some spandex shorts. If you don’t like the way they look on you, wear your regular shorts over them. I do that so that I can keep my tissues in my pockets. Hi Sam, First, some great ideas to follow by Doug. Second, often part of the problem is the way you walk.  If the pelvis doesn’t move with the legs as you walk forward, the rubbing and therefore motion rash is more likely to occur.  If the left leg is moving forward the pelvis moves with it, which means the right leg and pelvis are moving counter to the left side.  It’s like the aggitator of a washing machine turned upside down…the bottom of the bell shaped aggitator is now at the top.  If you hang two legs to the   inverted bell shape, as the aggitator moves counter clockwise and then clockwise, the legs go along for the ride. When rereading your post, often the problem may be the innerliners of your walking or running shorts.  It also may have to do with posture.  Depending on how you practice your sitting and standing during the day, if you’re not in good posture, the tendency is for the upper body to collapse into the pelvis and the pelvis  to roll back…so that you’re sitting on the tailbone, the psoas shortens, the hamstrings shorten, and your quads have a lot of work to do against those shortened quads.  You might want to check out: " Pumping Up The Body"    http://www.mindfulness.com/mind/of4.html Let us know what works so that we can learn from your experience. — In health and on the run, Ozzie Gontang Maintainer – rec.running FAQ Director, San Diego Marathon Clinic, est. 1975 Mindful Running   http://www.mindfulness.com

Re the original post, which I lost:         I think the poster was referencing walking on a treadmill.  Does chafing occur when walking outside?  If not, this once again bespeaks the fact that for some, possibly many, walking on a treadmill is _not_ the same as walking outside or on a track. Depending on the treadmill, of course.  And more obvious with running. —       Futilely Espousing God’s Word on Pre-Purchase Epiphany, Kristofer Hogg, ms rd,  Who can’t safely boil water, much less cook!
