Question:

* *Oh, best shoe: the ones we were born with. * Really?  My bronzed baby shoes crimp my toes and aren’t very responsive.    Unless you’re a special case, you were not born with baby    shoes.  Matt meant bare feet.  I agree with Matt completely. —    - Paul J. Lucas      AT&T Bell Laboratories      Naperville, IL

Well, Matt lives in Florida so I see how he can do it. Do you run year round in bare feet in Illinois? Bob

: I can’t believe no one has mentioned Nike Air Pegasus. I know : the model with built in sock sucks but where are all those : Ultrarunners who put Air Pegasus in their bio’s? : Good news! The new model is much better, having dumped the sock inner : or whatever it was. : I can’t believe I’ve been running in shorts and a singlet in mid-December. : Earl in Oklahoma (formerly of Saskatoon, Saskactchewan, now -32 C.) : — : Earl L. My enemies will fail.

*I can’t believe I’ve been running in shorts and a singlet in mid-December. * *Me neither.  Here in Florida it’s too warm for a singlet. :-) Well, maybe down south it is, but way up here in the frozen tundra of the Panhandle it’s become a bit nippy.

I don’t know guys there’s a certain je ne sais quois about the complete LIFA undersuit, gortex outerwear, gloves and balaclava that just gets me flying ;) (In otherwords — I don’t wanna hear it !) Cool but shorts and a tee shirt were fine today, 2 days before Christmas! It probably won’t last, but I’m enjoying it while I can. I haven’t expirenced a variety of shoes, I have been using the Nike Air Pegasus for all of the two plus years I’ve been running. I like them, but not the sock tongue version.         Well, the real point is to whether it’s humanly possible in         general: it is.         In answer to your question: No, exposed body parts (regardless         of part) are subject to frostbite when the temperature is low         enough.  As long as there is no snow nor ice on the ground and         the temparature is good enough, it’s bare feet for me. —         – Paul J. In 22 years of running I’m still looking for that "best shoe". In 1972 when I started we couldn’t even buy "real" running shoes in a sports store.  I bought my shoes from a guy out of a trailer – Does anyone remember Dick Pond????

Response:

There have been several votes for the Nike Air Pegasus, My opinion is that the Pegasus was a great shoe in the period 1985-88 (even the pre-Air model). Each year, Nike tinkered with the Pegasus and turned it into an average shoe. It became narrower, more curved, and less durable. The first Pegasus shoes that I wore were good for 5-600 miles. The last time I bought a pair was in 1990 when they broke down at 2-300 miles. Even though Dick Pond died a couple of years ago, Dick Pond Athletics of Carol Stream, IL still offers some of the best shoe deals around. — Office of University Computing                 Voice: (219) 631-8575 University of Notre Dame                         Fax: (219) 631-9283 Notre Dame IN 46556 "A computer isn’t some clunky old typewriter with a television in front of it.  It’s an interface where the mind and body can connect with the universe and  move bits of it about."  –Douglas Adams, "Mostly harmless".
