Running Shoes For Heavy Folks

Categories: nike running shoes

Question:

Are there any specific models of running shoes that are best suited for heavy folks (245 lbs)? The kids selling shoes in this area don’t have a clue about their products. Thanks

Response:

Brooks Beast.  Go to a running specialty store.

i’m 6′3" and weigh about about 240 lbs. without question, Brooks "Beasts" are the best shoe for a heavy runner. they have added support so to prevent over-pronantion.  they also have a very large surface area to displace the heel strike. i always ran in Nike, but i’ll never go back ~Jeff – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –  Are there any specific models of running shoes that are best suited for heavy folks (245 lbs)? I’ll look for these and give them a try.  I’m 6′4, 245 and have been using NB 990s and NB 586s, both supposedly tailored for us heavier folk.  Good results so far, plus I like the wide widths (I wear 4E).   Do Brooks models have different widths? –dt

Yeah.  Damn kids. Personally I’ve asked plenty of adults about products and they know nothing and have also asked plenty of kids that know what they’re talking about. Go to a specialty store as already suggested or just get the beefiest shoe you can find. -jeff

It’s a good one. I believe that in the latest version they have (AGAIN!) screwed around with the toe box, and I can’t wear them any more. I’m now running in the Saucony equivalent, can’t remember the name off hand. BobMac

I have my doubts about the Saucony Hammer (one of their big guy’s shoes). It does not seem as supportive as the Beast, MC-Plus, and 587. I had the Brooks Beast 2 years ago and didn’t like them at all. I now have NB 903’s and love them. I don’t know how they perceived by others, but I find them very good for cushioning and plenty of room for my size 12 EE feet. By the way, I am 255 lbs. More like a slow moving locomotive than a runner, but I still get a lot out of it. jp

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the Mizuno Wave Creation. Now, granted, I’m coming in at a "svelt" 198lbs, but I love them. The first pair I bought was in July and it was the Spring pair, and I liked them so much that I got a second pair – the Fall pair. The only difference I’ve noticed so far is the color. I bought them a little big and wear Thorlos with them. The thorlos really seem to keep the blisters down – important for us diabetics. If you can find some place that knows what they’re talking about, you’d be much better off. I’m lucky – here in the Pittsburgh area we’ve got Elite Runner’s and Walkers. They’ve got a treadmill and let you try the shoes out before you buy. Your mileage may vary. I’m up to about 30 miles/week. — Rob I’m running for my life!     Dedicated Brooks Beast guy here.  6′00", 210 lbs.  I’ve done three marathons in ‘em and wouldn’t trade ‘em for anything.  That said, I also own a pair of Adidas Cairos for shorter runs.  They’re my favorite 5K shoes. Not near the support that the Beast gives, but they’re so much lighter; I love ‘em on the shorter, faster stuff.                                 — Dave
