Question:

Hi Joyce, Do wear proper running shoes, not trainers (you don’t need a supportive instep but you do need light-weight, flexible shoes low at the ankles for movement) and try to do as much running as you can on softer surfaces rather than concrete and asphalt (to avoid impact injuries). Don’t forget to warm up – that is a few stretches followed by 10 minutes walking. Move your arms when walking to warm those muscles up too. I’m not sure I agree with the not needing instep support – might depend on how those feet are *built*. Sorry, confusing you a bit there – I meant you need *running* shoes, not gym shoes, since they are too rigid and built-up too high on the back, putting pressure on your Achiles tendon when running.

hehehe – it’s not difficult to confuse me, seems to be the natural state I move in. <G – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Proper running shoes are supportive, of course, but also come up lower on the foot, leaving the tendons free from pressure and are very flexible on the sole. I’m not a sport’s shoe expert, but I have had life-long problems with my feet and feel that buying the proper shoe for the job is vitally important. Consequently, I have three pairs of trainers: a pair for running, a pair for aerobics (more built up for stability, but less flexible) and a pair supposedly for tennis that I wear for slobbing about.  My son has flat feet, ended up with achiles tendonitis due to wearing non-supportive shoes while participating in athletics.  The pain he went through was horrid, and the therapy was rather lengthy.  He was pointed in the direction of 2 or 3 specific brands of shoes with higher support … or had to wear insertable arch supports in his current shoes. Many of the shoes on the market with built-in arch supports have the arch support in the wrong place, which actually puts pressure on the sole of the foot rather than supporting the foot. I’ve actually had a similar injury caused by inappropriate arch-supported trainers that were also too high in the back, causing pressure on my Achiles tendon. I think my running shoes *do* have arch supports (they’re proper Nike ones) but it’s soft and not kind of digging into the sole of my foot like my aerobics shoes.

We’ve found the same thing as far as the support.  Both kids are flat footed, have dealt with a lot of aches and pains because of this.  My mil is a firm believer in cheap shoes and lots of ‘em – started buying for the kids and changing them into her *preferred shoes* at every opportunity.  My daughter was at the point she couldn’t walk more than a block without her legs aching – got rid of the cheap shoes, threatened mil within an inch of her life <G, and the aches and pains went away.  She’d now kill for some of those stylish and cheaper shoes, but is old enough to know the repercussions if she makes that choice.  I do recall that Nike was one of the brands on the list of *good* shoes, along with Mizuno (for the athlete in the family).  There were a very few others, can’t remember them off the top of my head … as they do their own shoe shopping now. <G Light-weight shoes are definitely better for running though – again, basing this on my sons experience. He said his legs were not near as tired when wearing the lighter shoes … could also be a combination of the arch support and weight of the shoes. Gel or air insteps also help – my feet feel so light in my running shoes. Kind of bouncy. Like I said, my legs could keep going forever if only my lungs would comply!

My son just couldn’t get used to the inserts, think it had something to do with the cut of the shoe and the inserts not allowing him enough room for the foot.  He also tried heel cups (before we knew what the *real* problem was) and tossed those right away.  He does love those lightweight running shoes though, especially after lugging around the steel-toed workboats (that is NOT a typo) all day long. <G Joyce current weight: 138.6; total loss 90.2 lbs Lifetime status: 4/4/03

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Still, I’m determined to try. I got some advice off the National Asthma Campaign website about exercise and they pointed out that it can take 15 minutes before exercise actually affects the breathing of an asthmatic – making it very difficult for me to gauge how long to run. However, they did suggest short bursts of running followed by longer periods of walking or power walking, rather than jogging at a continual rate. I think this would also work for non-asthmatic but very unfit people. I’m starting off literally with 30 seconds running followed by 5 minutes walking. Running up steps and running on a beech for brief periods also help to build up stamina, without injury. Do wear proper running shoes, not trainers (you don’t need a supportive instep but you do need light-weight, flexible shoes low at the ankles for movement) and try to do as much running as you can on softer surfaces rather than concrete and asphalt (to avoid impact injuries). Joyce Weight-training can help to build up muscles for running – the more muscle you have, the more efficient your running and therefore the less huffing and puffing you’re likely to require. Also build-up aerobic strength with swimming or low-impact aerobics. Hope this helps!

Okay, I admit it, I have been avoiding this NG since monday.  Sorry everybody but I have felt down and depressed and I couldn’t face you even though I know you would be nice and supportive and helpful.  Well,  looking at the NG sitting there not doing anything harmful just looking soulfully at me made me feel guilty enough to post my IFFC for this week. I maintained yet again (at the higher weight)!.  So, I still weight 185.  I am OP and drinking water until I feel like I should just sit in the bathroom with a tube running from the sink to my mouth (sorry for the graphic)! and I have been exercising like crazy and still nothing.  This weight is stuck on me like glue.  I am trying to tell myself that It is my "set point" (or whatever that is called) and that it will take awhile but it will go away eventually but I am getting really ticked off and depressed.  I have been noticing all of the things wrong with me and I haven’t even had a NSG to cheer me up.  Just me and my fat sitting here like best buddies.  I wish we could break up gracefully but I see that that isn’t happening! Well, I have depressed everyone enough.  Congrats to all of the losers that I missed this week.  I hope that everyone is doing well. Thanks for listening, Kristen

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Okay – I do not have good news to report but at least I am doing the WI. I seem to be stuck at the same place that I always get stuck at.  This week I actually had a gain of 3 lbs to put me back at 185.  I know it is because I ate at my MIL’s house and she uses salt like it is going out of style!!! I came home last night and couldn’t get my rings off and my feet were so swollen that they hurt.  I even drank extra water and that didn’t help.  I can tell you that the amount of salt in the meal made me feel dehydrated and weak.  I think she used the ENTIRE container!!! Anyway, that is past me!! I did my WI as usual.  I am going to take my gain and learn from it (never eat at my MILs…. lol) and now I am going back OP. I also am going to start running.  Well, actually I am going to start walking really fast and hope that one day it turns into running.  <grin. Every one I know has told me how great running is and how I will feel so much better if I just get out and do it sooo I am going to try. I know most of you walk and walking is less stress on your joints but I have always wanted to run (and have a runner’s body… lol).  Does anyone know of any good sites or newsgroups for running newbies?  If you could point me in the right direction.  If you want to, you can also give me all the reasons for why I shouldn’t run.  I will listen to both sides of the story <grin Okay, that’s it.  You can all go back to what you were doing.  Thanks for listening. — Kristen 191/185/175/150 "One minute at a time."

Hey Kristen, I like your quote at the bottom.  I just wanted to say that on the subject of running.  I started out walking leisurely and progressed to brisk walking. Right now, I am doing a walk for 10minutes then running as much as I can then walk for 10minutes again, etc.  That seems to work for now and hopefully, I will progress to running all out.  I don’t know if that technique will help you. I am also not genetically suited to running (flat feet, asthma, weak joints, now possible risk of osteoporosis). However, I’ve also always dreamed of running.

Thanks Brenda, I found out last night that I am not fit enough to run for 30 minutes straight so I started running for 5 minutes, then walking, then walking hills, then running some more.  I have to say that I was pleasantly sore this morning so it must be doing something.  Oh, and all of the water weight was gone (I must have sweated it out).  Your sig line is looking good. Congrats only 3 more lbs to go.!!! — Kristen 191/183/175/150 "One minute at a time."

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sorry about the gain Kristen.  Darn MIL’s anyway…  Better luck next week. Facing it, no matter the outcome, is essential for eventual success. The thing about fluid retention is that not only does it puff you up, adding weight and making your clothes uncomfortable, it really is not healthy. Not only is the fluid collecting in the tissues around your joints, it also builds up in heart tissue (and that of other organs), putting a lot of pressure and stress on that vital organ. People with heart trouble know that fluid retention is a deadly serious concern. Perhaps your MIL would respect that argument, if she’s unwilling to hear any other.
