After Marathon Running?

Categories: marathon running

Question:

How quickly do people get back to running after a marathon? Monday I walked a painful 2, plus I spent most of the day on my feet at a mall.  Tuesday and Wednesday I did nothing, taking two full days off from all forms of exercise.  That’s the first I did that in a while. Finally, I ran 1.5 today and walked .5 in between there somewhere to cover a full 2.  That was about all I could do.  I still have a pain above the arch in my left foot. I like to do my taper in reverse. Something like this: Wed – 6 Thu – 4 Fri – 0 Sat – 0 Sun – marathon Mon – 0 just easy stretching Tue – 0 just easy stretching Wed – 4 Thu – 6 Then take about 2 weeks to get up to the mileage I was doing during peak training  minus 10-15 miles. During those weeks take one more day off than you normally do. Finally, I ran 1.5 today and walked .5 in between there somewhere to cover a full 2.  That was about all I could do.  I still have a pain above the arch in my left foot.

Was the pain from the marathon or something that was lingering during your training for the marathon? I would take it easy a couple more days and see if it goes away. If not, maybe see the doc.    -Phil

Response:

It takes up to 6 weeks until the body has recovered after a marathon. If this was your first marathon, it was also probably the longest run you ever did. Training for a marathon doesn’t include marathon lengths, and if you are having minor problems during the build up they usually turn to major problems at the end of a marathon. After my first marathon I suffered from sore feets and tighs for about 5 days, then slowly I could start running again, but the rest of the seasons races (10K and 21 K ) was spoiled. 10K= 10 sek over PB, 21K= 28 sek over PB. It takes time to get back on track after a marathon rgds Robert
