Running at Los Alamos area?

Categories: cross country running

Question:

Hi, I’ll visit Los Alamos National lab. from 3rd of October up to Cristmas. I’m a distance runner whose interests are especially cross-country running and orienteering. I got some very nice answers from newsgroup ‘rec.sport.orienteering’ concerning orienteering in New Mexico. Now I would like to get some information about running events ets. at Los Alamos. Where to run, what to see, maybe some runners to make now and then runs together. Best wishes, Pauli

Response:

Hello, Los Alamos is a great place to run, at least if you like trail running, and don’t mind adjusting to the altitude (7200′). When you get into town, find a trail map at one of the local bookstores, and have fun exploring. Some to try are the LANL Fitness Trail, as well as the main residential mesas. Mitchell Trail, plus Guaje Road. For a nice road run, try the "back gate run": starts at Diamond and 501 (by the lab), and run out 501 and back. You’ll find plenty of runners there during the lunch hour. BTW, men are allowed to run these trails on even numbered days on prime numbered months :) And the local paper covers the high school girls teams even more than the boys! Richard
