top of foot pain :(
Question:
I’ve been extra busy with life/work issues lately and haven’t had much free time to hang out here
I’m still training towards maybe entering the SF marathon July 27, so far so good,…well, at least until a few days ago. I’ve been having a new problem recently with kind of a sharp pain in the top of my left foot, at the highest point right above the arch I guess. I’m currently looking through some old archived r.r posts via google and getting some ideas but havent come accross an old post which matches exactly, so I’m asking here if anyone has experience with many of my specific symptoms: The pain starts up usually about 20-25 minutes into a run, give or take a little. Strangely, if I stop and gently massage the area for only a few seconds with a couple of fingers stuck under the tongue of my shoe, I can resume running for a while with no pain whatsoever…then the cycle repeats. I’m on my second pair of asics gel kojis (motion control shoes recommended by a good running shoe store, after watching me run for a bit), and have never had a single foot-related problem since getting my first pair, some 500+ miles ago. I *think* my shoes are probably not a culprit here, but not ruling it out of the realm of possibilty. I’ve experimented with tying my shoelaces extra loose on that foot, and that doesn’t seem to make any difference. The area is generally somewhat tender to the touch, depending on how long it has been since I ran on it, but for the most part, I only notice the pain after 20-25 minutes of continuous running. When running, it seems to get noticeably worse when running either uphill, or when making turns. Being a newbie runner still (10-11 months now), and averaging around 40 mpw, I’ve worked my way through a number of similar aches and pains which just magically seemed to go away after a few days. I’m afraid this one is seeming to get worse over time, compared to the other nagging twinges I’ve felt. I may be able to schedule a doctor appt. in a few weeks if it comes to that, …just hoping I can get some more info before then. I’m thinking about taking an entire week off, and then icing it each day,…hate to do it, but will if I have to. Help? thoughts? Thanks much in advace! Do you have any stiffness or pain in the high arch area early in the morning when you first get up? If you do you might have a stress fracture in one of the metatarsal bones of the foot. Stress fractures are tricky in that they typically don’t show up in X-ray until 2 weeks after injury.

Thanks for the reply Bill,…Nope, no stiffness, pain, nuthin’ really at any time, morning or otherwise, except for 20-30 minutes into a run. Hopefully that’s some evidence that I do NOT have a stress fracture (yikes!), but of course, not to rule that out 100% entirely…

Help? thoughts? Thanks much in advace!
Hmm, I had something similar that still pops up from time to time. Is the area a little swollen? If so, I found that using a box lacing at the top and bottom of my shoes helped. This was after I’d loosened my shoes to the point where they were flopping. The laces crossed right on the top of my foot. I also loosened my street shoes, just in case. Good luck, Layne The rec.running report archives may be found at http://kinder.cis.unf.edu/rec.running

Jake, From a 1998 post. It might be of some help to you. I am training for my first marathon (first race at all, actually), and after longer runs sometimes get a pain on the top of my foot, about half way between heel and toes. The pain is only when I flex the foot and is accompanied by a kind of grating feel, like a rusty door hinge! I can feel this in the foot and also externally if I place my hand on the foot and flex it. Possibly the current pain was caused by a 25km run on Sunday (my longest yet), when I may have had slightly too tightly tied shoelaces. Does anybody know what this is? Has anybody had the same? I hope it is not serious, in any case when it is bad I cannot run for a few days and this realyl throws my training program! very grateful for any help/advice, David Johnstone
Knee on your bed with the toes handing over the edge. Sit back so you are sitting on the your calves with the upper body leaning forward over the thighs. Start to sit back more so that the top of the foot starts to slide off the bed but sitting so that enough pressure holds the skin of the top of the foot back and that is you wiggle your toes, you can feel the skin sliding forward as your feet continue to slide off the edge of the bed. Once the feet are off the bed, keep sliding off so that then the lower part of the shins start to slide off the bed. Now you have to lean the upper body a little more foreward so that your shins slowly continue to slide off the edge of the bed. Now you move your foot up and down and you’ll feel the skin of the shins being pulled forward a little as you continue to slide off the edge of the bed. This is a way I use to loosen the fronts of my feet and also the shins. Also use a tennis ball under the arch of your foot. Lightly stand on it one foot then the other with your feet in this position || and not /. Step on the ball first just behind the ball of the foot, then just in front of the heel and then finally in the middle of the arch. The reason for this is that this may be the trouble spot which is causing the top of the foot to have to work against an area which won’t let go…therefore causing it to overwork. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’ve been extra busy with life/work issues lately and haven’t had much free time to hang out here
