Sore muscle on outside edge of shin (not shinsplints?)
Question:
Do you have callouses on the ball of your foot behind your big toe? Try cutting a chunk out of your insole underneath that area, so there isn’t as much pressure forcing your knee out as you toe-off. DON’T wear any motion control shoes with medial posts, dual density midsoles, etc… — Ray Charbonneau R107 – End User Computing The MITRE Corporation – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have had major problems for the last few years with muscle soreness in my lower legs, particularily in one leg (my right). It does not seem like plain old shin splints which normally occur on the inside edge of the shin, and in the region from ankle to about halfway up to the knee. Instead, I get major pain, and muscle tightness/swelling on the muscle that sits on the outside edge of the shin, from the knee down to about halfway down the shin. In periods when I am putting on major miles, it can get so bad that my legs actually go numb from the knee down, and can’t support my weight well while running (I cut back on my training when this happens). I don’t over pronate, but I do have a pretty pronounced bow to my legs (maybe I suppinate slightly?). Certain shoes really aggravate this condition (most asics shoes for some reason). I have found some relief using lightweight, neutral trainers like NB 826, but am still not pain free. I don’t run on hard surfaces. I am a light weight guy (5′9" 130lbs). I suspect that it is somehow caused by the bow in my legs, but I do not have any clear idea how to treat/prevent this condition other than stop running, but that’s not really feasible now is it
Can anyone help me out here? Thanks, Troy Ketela

Troy, I’m experiencing an identical problem at the moment. I’ve been told that I don’t have any problems with my stride etc. so I’m puzzled at what this could be aside from an overuse injury. I’ve just finished taking 2 weeks off but I’m still getting a twinge during, and following longer runs or hard medium runs. It’s been suggested that unusually rapid growth in that muscle may cause this kind of problem, and I’ve recently started playing football(soccer), can you see any evidence/reason for a sudden muscle growth in your case? Please pass on any details you find and I will do the same.
