shoes for under-pronating, +200 lb runner

Categories: asics running

Question:

Help.  Can anyone suggest a shoe(s) for me.  I have been running for about 6 months.  I am up to approx 18-20 miles a week.  I under-pronate.  I weigh 209 lbs.  All the shoes for heavier runners seem to be made for over-pronators, while all the shoes made for under-pronators seem to be light weight and/or for racing. I’ve had a pair of Nike Air Max Triax that did not have enough cushion in the forefoot (at least for my tastes).  The Asics Gel 123’s I had were very comfortable but they wore out quickly on the outer edges of the shoes (due, I’m assuming, to  underpronating).  Right now I’m wearing Addidas Response but the ball of my foot gets very hot after running about a mile.  It’s clear the Response is too light weight for a guy over 200 lbs.  WHAT SHOULD I DO?   Thank You, Glen.

Response:

Check out Brooks  Gazelle’s.   I own Nike Air Triax too, and they’re too firm also. I supinate too and love super soft shoes. You can find Gazelles for about 29 bucks at a good shoe store on the sales rack.  The new Gazelle is supposed to be called "Gaze". Dale

I have been running in New Balance 998s (I’m on my second pair) for a while now, and like them very much.  They took a bit longer to break in, but once they were, they served me fine.  I also run in Nike Air Structure Triax with success.  I seem to prefer the Nikes on the track and the 998s on the road. I am a 200+ lb runner averging 35 miles per week, 50-60 marathon training.  As a Boston area runner, I look forward to being able to run Boston’s 100th as a legit runner this coming year.  I’ll have to wait until the next lottery, however.     Carpe Viam.    Dave
