Nike Sponsorship Question

Categories: asics running

Question:

I’m very curious as to why people like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Micheal Johnson, Bob Kennedy could have someone like Nike sponsor them. Do they not have a conscience.  This is like if you find a wallet do you do the right thing?  Is it just for the big bucks they make?  Then thats as bad as being a drug dealer.  People are getting hurt by your greed for money, more so infact.  I’m really sickened when I here Tiger or other African Americans cry about racism and prejudice when they support one of the most racist companies in the world.  My two cents. Maybe I’ve been living in a vacuum, but I really don’t remember hearing Tiger crying about racism.  It seems to me that he has been trying to steer away from that "oh poor pity on me, I’ve been put down so much" image.  If anyone has been playing the race card lately it is those who want Tiger to be their front man.  Tiger Woods is a great example of what happens when you combine talent with drive, intensity, and a will to win.  That he is sponsored by Nike is more a tribute than a detriment as you seem to imply with your reasoning. My advice to you is that you should stop reading Doonesbury and read some real journalism for a change.  Do you also fantasize about Kim, as well?   Perhaps you are just jealous of their success, no? And how is Bob Kennedy’s shoe contract like finding a wallet on the ground?  If it wasn’t for his shoe contract, Kennedy wouldn’t be competing on the international level and people like you would be crying about how the U.S. isn’t competitive on the world level. Finally, what brand of shoes do you run in?   Nike? Adidas? Asics???  Name for me one brand of running shoe that isn’t made in some 3rd world, low-income, low-wage country.  Unless you run barefoot, then you have no room to complain. And that’s my 2 cents reply!

Very unlikely any of the above knew anything about Nike’s employment practices before signing contracts.  And presuming they do now, it will be up to them to make changes when those contracts expire. I know of training athletes and the troubles they go thru to make it all worthwhile.  When someone like Nike suddenly shows an interest, OF COURSE they are going to snap it up.  They see it as their moment, an opportunity that may never arise again.  Moral issues can take a quick backseat in the face of a personal dream and sacrifice to have gotten to a chance for athletic/commercial success.
